Rob Van Dam talks about when himself and kane defended their tag team titles against the road warriors and how Hawk no sold their finisher. #robvandam #roadwarriors #legionofdoom
The Road Warriors always had an aversion to doing the job because back in the day not only were they a massive guaranteed draw but also there was always another territory to go work for. Unfortunately for them the business had completely changed & old habits definitely die hard.
💯! True the road warriors were living legends and certainly shouldn't have been jobbed out like geeks, But on the other hand trying to pull an ultimate warrior/hhh (no-selling the big finisher) wasn't cool either
Andre the Giant is another example of an industry legend who once ruled the roost and then later felt the wrestling landscape grow smaller around them. Hawk manufactured the demons which dug his own early grave while Andre was simply ill fated due to the circumstances of his birth.
Watching as a kid I completely missed the no sell, or maybe I just didn't remember it. I just recalled the excitement of them coming back. But seeing it as an adult it was cringeworthy how fast they got up. Not surprising they were let go.
I was like 12 or 13 at the time, I didn't get it then but I just remember the next day at school talking to a classmate about Road warriors showing up, bro it was crazy even in 2003! Sucks looking back
@@geeloco1600 you don't say smh🤦🏽♂️ I'm just saying some people act like dead people shouldn't be talked bad about no matter what they do just because they are dead
@@Ahmed-og2jm yup go ahead don’t voice your own opinion like a bitch because you’re scared what others are gonna think? Stay true to yourself clown easy life lesson grow up it’s not highschool popularity contest kid this is real life
It’s weird, when I was a kid and saw RVD promos, amazing ring work I always thought he’s one of a kind, pun intended, but never thought he was such a tough guy backstage. That was before I knew he bitch slap Taz back in the ECW days and other shoot interviews RVD did when he didn’t te-sign with WWE. “PICK A HAND!” RVD is a Legend!
Not selling doesn't really make anybody look tough. If you make your opponent look like a real threat to you, then it's a bigger triumph when you win over them. The Road Warriors never understood that. RVD did understand it and was a very generous wrestler. Back in ECW I saw him give a lot of jobbers their best match ever, by letting them get some good shots in. He knew that he'd win the match in the end, and letting the other guy have a good match would make his own win look like a real achievement, since the opponent got to look a bit formidable. Like, CW Anderson -- nobody thought that guy was anywhere close to RVD in skill, but RVD let CW get in some good offensive moves, and sold 'em. It didn't hurt RVD's image at all, helped CW look like a stronger wrestler, and gave the crowd a better show. Rag-dolling some guy who seems to pose no threat at all isn't any great feat. "Squash" matches are never really that good... they're not exciting to watch and they don't look like a real achievement for the guy who wins 'em. Beating up somebody who seems tough, though, that's something.
I can see the Roadies withstanding one finisher or the other as they were always booked as being super durable. But both moves almost simultaneously is nuts.
They made a career out of no selling the local guys finisher. That was the point of the road warriors. They come to your territory, take over, and leave with your belts
@@captainchainsaw8856 sure it was. With their gimmick you are always in business for yourself. Rvd was a big fish in a trash pond. He got in his ego because he had to work for his W. If you don't want to work with washed up dudes that have a hulk hogan never sell gimmick, don't work in a joke organization that need washed wrestlers to sell tickets
@@jeremyjamm3131 If you don't evolve your gimmick then you won't be in business very long. They should have realized their time had passed. If you wanted WWE type money, then go there and do business.....if not, better get used to working indies.
@@KClouisville to this day the most successful and dominant team in wrestling history. Yeah. You don't evolve and change for a trash company when you write your own ticket all over the world. Vince begged them to come in, not vice versa. They didn't need to change for Vince lmfao. Some people have no clue wtf they are talking about. Keep scrolling
Sucks to hear that happened to RVD about the run in 95. I want to say that was when Hawk was still a single which many thought was bad because he would get out of control far more often than when Animal and Precious Paul were around in the 80's and 90's. Liked the match you and Kane had with them both teams got some good offense in. I think the Road Warriors thought the WWE front office wanted them to be the Road Warriors of old kickass and take names when the office was, "no more like help get the younger guys over" sucks it didn't work out that time.
@@josephroseo8063 if I recall they squared off in a brawl during the ECW cross promotion on an episode of Monday Night Raw back in 1997 before the ECW Barely Legal ppv
There’s no denying the accomplishments of LOD. I’ve always had the impression but they were kind of jerks behind the scenes. I say this as a fan of them especially considering the demons everyone knows that Road Warrior Hawk battled throughout his life
There's a great story about Verne Gange trying to pay them to legit break Hogan's leg, they warned hulk saying something to the tune of "We're businessmen"
The match should've been the road warriors vs the dudleys. That was the one chance to do it. That year was all about dream matches: hogan vs mcmahon, hbk vs Jericho, goldberg vs rock, they could've had the road warriors vs the dudleys
@@IHateBozos Why the hell not? Nobody gives a shit about RVD/Kane Tag career in all honesty. Just weird having them return in that scenario and NOT win. Could have had them squash somebody else if that's the case...and I love RVD and Kane. But c'mon it's LOD!
Sometimes when people are ill, they will go overboard trying to seem tough, especially if they feel threatened. No excuse for bullying, but it sometimes happens.
@@Nepthu Hawk wasn't the toughest but the average man certainly wasn't taking him, an amateur MMA fighter? Yeah sure, also Hawk was like 41 in that fight against an ex NFL football player who was in better shape and arguably won, he still did better against Droz than Bradshaw did.
Hawk always pissed me off with that stuff. When he lost matches he would get up before the damn winner. The winners of the match would sell more than he did. He would jump up and hike up his pants like always.
Hawk was a unique guy even in wrestling. One of my favourite stories is when Ole Anderson was trying to find guys for the Road Warriors gimmick and he lined up a bunch of men and everyone was saying how great it was to meet Ole and then it was Hawk's turn and he said "You think you're a tough guy, huh?" or something like that.
@@jackhughes7637 Seriously, his swagger and physique were likely enough to intimidate most guys, but anyone with six months of boxing or MMA training knew more about fighting than he did.
@@Nepthu That's completely unfair to Hawk. Not trying to defend his behaviour, but to judge Hawk's toughness on a sudden shoot tournament he was thrown into that happened at the height of his drug addiction problems and when he was physically at his lowest (he died just 5 years later), not to mention 40+ years old and 15 years into his wrestling career, is highly flawed. I'm not saying he was an elite fighter who could have hung with MMA guys, but Hawk came from the mid-80s when MMA wasn't even a thing yet, and he was legit tough in terms of not backing down in fights and being able to back his bravado, even before his wrestling career, when he used to work as a bouncer.
RVD was a mid card wrestler who says here ' I was a star', but compared to the LOD in the Kane match? Did you hear the pop in the match? I'm proud that they no sold it and just laid down at the end LOD had no story line going forward (Hawk made a pass at my girlfriend, etc_) Greatest tag team ever.
I remember Hawk no selling a piledriver from Kane but then sold the tombstone. I think it was a match between LOD & The Godwinns and the NOA got involved and then Kane made an appearance and attacked Hawk.
Hawk is a great example of All show, no brains. He had a killer look, he was convincing, and his gimmick was perfect for him, but his ego sunk his entire career. Wouldnt put anyone over, constantly no-selling finishes and just being an all around asshole backstage when he was wasted. Hawk is only a legend because of Animal. If not for him we wouldnt have even heard about him after the 80s. Its really sad that guys like him self implode all the time.
the point of the no sell, Hawk was TOUGH, that's how L.O.D worked, when he took a pile driver, he got up, because he and Animal were TOUGH, too tough hence why they got dumbed down in the awful storyline, and they were Old school suited for their time, and wwe always miss used them.
Not in 2003 when they were past their prime. Their timing was sloppy, they were purposely being stiff, it was just a poor match. I don't think they could hang with the fast, smoother style of Kane and RVD and decided to try and put themselves over.
I love this podcast, but you guys seriously need to sort the audio out. Those gamer mics are trash. Also everyones' voice is always at a different level. I appreciate the content you guys release, but please sort that shit out.
I doubt it, RVD is a highly trained martial artist and Hawk is a roided up pub fighter. Just because Hawk puts on a tough look doesn't mean he is lol Brock Lesnar would make him his bitch. I think sometimes fans get too caught up in the fantasy of wrestling they forget reality.
As a fan of the Road Warriors since the early 80's when they were in the AWA to sell to certain moves...that's betraying what the Road Warriors were. They no sold certain moves all the time and the crowd popped for it. To not allow a few No Selling moments...that's watering down the team as a whole and not understanding who Hawk and Animal were and why they were legends. I mean seriously...seriously...after they joined the WWF/E they were basically disrespected and ruined by the end of their tenure there. Really really pissed me off to no end knowing what I knew about them in the AWA and the NWA/WCW. In fact..the way the Road Warriors were treated in the WWE in the later years still pisses me off. Good for Hawk for not being a trained organ grinder's monkey.
The Road Warrior's first TV match was in 1983, the events described by RVD was in 1995. Older talent are supposed to put over younger talent. It's how the new generation get their street credits for the TV show. Buddy Rogers, Nick Bockwinkle, Harley Race put over Rick Flair when he was starting out. Flair put over Dusty Rhodes, Sting, Ronny Garvin. The win over an opponent isn't impressive if he loses all of the time.
@@HepCatJack But that was the peak of the Road Warriors career, and the Skyscrapers were a very new WCW-only stable, the Road Warriors sold for them when it came time to sell, they just made sure they earned it
Nah you get paid to do a job, WWE does things differently. basically they had a sulk and decided to act like idiots. Plus they weren't in any shape or condition to be no selling a chokeslam and five star frog flash, get real lol
sad .....here was LOD THE HOTTEST tag team in the world and .....then .....they don,t make the audition .....say what you THINK ...... RVD nailed it ...end of the LOD true story
I think it would be silly to not assume Hawk was tough but I don’t think he would have faired great against anybody with martial arts training of nearly any kind even in his prime. JR told a story of Hawk and Dr Death nearly going at it in the mid 80’s and if that fight actually had went down, I’m not sure Hawk would have held the same reputation afterwards. It’s all speculation and I don’t mean any disrespect but just going over history of how those kinds of fights tend to go.
I can understand with rvd being upset about them not selling things. Honestly how often did the road Warriors sell for anyone?! Don’t get me wrong they should’ve done better if they were actually gonna get rehired that night.! I need to rewatch the match again cause I thought it was decent and fun . I’ve heard or read things about how certain producers put a match together and then tells someone or team to do this without the other talents in the ring on what’s going on.! Soo who knows
The only time that no sell got over was when hawk did it to Henry o.. but when he did it to sting and ming it was distasteful.. but the worst of all was when booker T pile drived him out of the ring through a table and hawk instantly got up... I believe that took the cake to the dumpster 😂🎉 it was slightly different and funny tho Roman reigns needs to start doing it.
The Roadwarriors were both the most over tag team and the most over rated tag team . The Warriors never wanted to realize their time was up . We had seen their best and they were never gonna be that impressive again .
I watched the match. Hawk bumped for everything. Sure he got up quick after the pin, he kicked out late. But hey THE MATCH WAS A FIVE MINUTES and made LOD look like ish. RvD with his blind memory having a
TBH, The Road Warriors were in their 40s and their physiques weren't as impressive as when they first started. As much as I loved The LOD, by that point, they weren't the killer monsters they used to be. They could have stayed competitive but squashing dudes like when they were in their 20s wasn't gonna happen when they hit their 40s. Sadly, I don't think they realized that fact.
@@grunt-sw8si That's when Animal said that he and Hawk got along well, too. After they left for WWF is when things started to get really ugly for Hawk as you can tell from stuff like showing up to a big match drunk.
