Robben Ford, aside from being a supreme guitarist, has a beautiful way of explaining the driving forces that propel musical improvisation - I find it very inspiring.
Robben Ford such a wonderful ,magical ,master of complexed, simplicity ! What a true living legend! Thank God for such a fine Musician like him!.....never do I get tired of hearing this Master
loved watching Robben explain how he comes to play what he does over 'just the two of us', and his passion on the feeling of playing instead of just hitting the notes. TFS ~!~
what Robben says, is true to everyone who is doing art in any form. i got a lot inspiration from him. Thank you so much Robben, and the gentleman who upload this. Bless you all.
thnx for postin guys, this is so useful!!! i had the privilege to open for Robben & the Blue Line 19 years ago and saying that these cats were nice to us must be the biggest understatement ever: they literally spent the whole time w/ us and seemed to be genuinely interested in what we were doin...one of the best memories ever :)))
Great interview, I've been a fan since his first solo album back in 79, love his work in every context, with yellowjackets and of course his solo carrer, I've learned a lot from his records, one of my favorites without a doubt, great treat to hear him talk about his playing. Thank you.
Robben not knowing the term 'superlocrian' reminds me of Scofield's story of Miles Davis calling diminished chords augmented and vice versa. It had been so long since he thought about the names that he had forgotten the names, but "he still played the hell out of them".
the formula for the Super Locrian scale is 1 b2 b3 b4 b5 b6 b7, so for example, the C Super Loc is C Db Eb E Gb Ab Bb. Also known as the Altered scale, or Altered Dominant scale.
very cool and inspiring. robben ford is very inspirational. I am specially glad to hear this lesson because my fender baja mexican telecaster sounds very close to his vintage telecaster.
I thought Robben was an awesome guitarist but a person commented that he doesn't have his "thumb independence sorted" so I guess I was mistaken. I have my middle finger independence sorted.
Maravilloso Robben Ford. Patetico!!!
Surfing is a good analogy, however, to me, Ford is like down hill skier seemingly on the edge at all times, challenging himself and time, pushing the limits of both with joy. Excitement, guts, art.
This interviewer is flabbergasted by robben's simple truths. looks like he was expecting him to divulge some super-secret scale that would blow his viewers minds.
a HUGE reason RF sounds so much like RF ( yes hands!) BUT.. i read that he DIS-connects the tone control on all his guitars, waay more brighter n punchier...HTH's..........
RF = GREAT PLAYER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But like he sad [or i heard out :-)] : Better play in a band. Soloplaying is too hard for almost everyone or you have to spend 10 hours PRACTICE on the day, but it's also fun!! :-) (i meant soloplaying like JP. Only pentatonic or blues scale for solo guitar is a bit low) YT is FUN!!! :-)
Not untrained musicians. Those who know harmony - know that the diminished and altered scales can unlock the mystery of how and why harmonic progressions work
