Unforgettable song, the way he plays the piano is out of this world, Basho himself was born an orphan... Off of "Visions of the Country" one of the finest albums I've ever heard.
Basho himself was orphaned as an infant. This song expresses a longing to be reunited with his parents. The liner notes dedicate the song as follows: “To all the little orphans of the rainbow; and may they find the gentle hand of the Creator.”
Born for love, and nothing more, Given away because we was poor, Will you wait, will you wait for me? My hair was black, and my eyes was bright, Never catch up to my parents side, will you wait, will you wait for me? I'll be waiting there by the river, my love. I'll be waiting there by the trees. Will you wait? My face was brown, and my hair was long. Cut my hair, and hushed my song. Will you wait, will you wait for me? All my life I've been forced to roam, Never had a place to call my own. Will you wait, will you wait for me? I'll be waiting there by the river, my love. I'll be waiting there by the trees. Will you wait? Will you wait?
@@withoutcrux it's actually "never gave pleasure to my parent's sight" which on the surface seems less fitting but is actually much more heartfelt and tragic
Lyrics Born for love and nothing more Given away 'cause we was poor Will you wait, will you wait for me? I'll be waiting by the river my love I'll be waiting by the trees Will you wait, will you wait for me? I first heard this way back in the 1970s (thank you for the correction) when I hitchhiked around the U.S. mostly out west and lived almost exclusively in the American wilderness eating wild edible plants and early on fish I would catch with a rod I carried with me, a tube tent and a good backpack. I was like a gypsy with Guatemalan clothes and feathers in my hair, a colorful bandana on my head and I wore crystal jewelry I made myself from rockhound finds (my Shawnee and choctaw blood) It has a special meaning to me for the two rare times baby does slept next to me but just distant on cold nights in the forest I even petted one, who cuddled up to me to stay warm. I think they themselves may have been orphans.
This song is great I am Japanese I am translating to google I think the lobby show is really great I will buy a record next time Thank you for uploading great songs
ROBBIE BASHO, must be the one in Berkeley in the sixties, with his full 12 string throbing and beating chords ! wonderful must be him now again..Paul arnoldi
Paul Arnoldi Did you have any conversation with him? How did he look/act like? Sorry if I'm asking a lot of questions but he's really an interesting artist and soul, you could reply here or take your time and comment on my channel, there's a documentary coming soon about him, and the site robbiebasho-archives.info welcomes any new information about him, thanks in advance Paul.
Just discovered this song, this fabulous artist, from another one, which have nothing in common, Huun Huur Tu, who had a song also named "Orphan's lament". This is so great to discover from one point to another and discover such majectic piece of music. I do know Robbie Dasho now, and it's a real pleasure to my ears. (just found it on bandcamp!! ... nice!)
I’ve returned here many a time, as it’s one of the few sources of this song. Thanks for the upload. A true secret gem in the pop canon that it is hard to tire of.
SO STIRRING. YOU CANT LOVE JOHN FAHEY UNLESS YOU ALSO LOVE ROBBIE BASHO. I LOVE "A NORTH AMERICAN RAGA". WOULD SURE LOVE TO HAVE IT UPLOADED. WHAT A STRANGE DEATH. HIS CHIROPRACTOR PERFORMED AN INTENTIONAL WHIPLASH EXPERIMENT, CAUSING HIS BLOOD VESSELS IN HIS NECK TO RUPTURE, LEADING TO A FATAL STROKE. WHAT A GREAT AND MIGHTY SPIRTUAL LOSS AND YET HE'S STILL HERE.
What exactly is the almost angelic, "vibrating" instrument played throughout the song? I am not referring to the piano either, surely it can't be it. The device sounds like some kind of hammer based instrument, it sort of reminds me of a Marxophone, or other such zither. Quite the soul touching piece, Robbie Basho seemed such a gentle heart.
@@dimitrigodhead1969 It isn't a Dulcimer, It's a "Western" tuned standing piano. This song is just Basho and a piano (There is no credit for any other instrument besides piano for this song on the new or old vinyl pressing)
is it just by chance that 'Orphan's Lament' is also the name of one of Huun-Huur-tu's albums? i found them recently and Mother Tiger by them is the only thing i've ever heard that makes me feel the way Rocky Mountain Raga does

Never (making an “ay” sound as in gave, not a “eh” sound as in can) ...(making a “zh” sound as in pleasure, not a “ch” sound as in catch)...(the “ur” sound in pleasure is debatable because it could sound like up, though I’m pretty sure he pronounces the R pretty clearly) to my parents (sight or side? Idk). Being an orphan given away he must not have given pleasure to his parents sight. Not enough to keep him. Maybe at no fault of his own. Maybe it was there own shame or remorse for knowing they couldn’t take care of him that brought them displeasure when they saw him. Regardless...I’m certain those are the lyrics.
