Robbie Collin reviews The Congress. More than two decades after catapulting to stardom, aging actress Robin Wright (playing a version of herself) decides to preserve her digital likeness for a future Hollywood. Her alias will be controlled by Miramount Studios, and will star in any film they want with no restrictions. In return she receives compensation so she can care for her ailing son, and her digitized character will stay forever young. Twenty years later under the creative vision of the studio's head animator, Wright's digital double rises to immortal stardom. With her contract expiring, she is invited to take part in "The Congress" convention as she makes her comeback straight into the world of future fantasy cinema.

A very unique film. Never have I seen such an accurate depiction of anxiety. The themes such as subjectivity of conciousness, transcendence, and peeking into the human condition were so beautifully portrayed. The movie haunted me.

Danny Huston has such an amazing voice. I watched this film last night without really knowing what I was going in to see. I came out not really knowing what I had seen. It's a great film. Initially I came out thinking that it was complex, but after a few moments of thought I realised that it's actually a very simple film but done extremely well. Certainly worth checking out if you like interesting films, beautiful animation and a bit of a dreamy story.

Really really cool film. I feel that Robbie Collin spent a bit too much time thinking about the references than the actual content of what was being said, ie society progressing to this soup of icons and culture bleeding with consciousness. It's not just a hodgepodge of references for the sake of it, it's inkeeping with the central themes that are presented at the beginning.

Ok I got it, it's René Laloux and I do agree, his Fantastic Planet (1973) is amazing. Highly recommended

This film was really dark and pessimistic. Interesting art though, very Bakshi-like.

Glad I watched this at home and didn't go see it at the cinema at the time. I hate to waste money going to the toilet over and over again out of boredom.
