This is a clip from the 1956 movie, "Forbidden Planet" that introduced Robby the Robot. Robby was also the name for Issac Asimov's first Robot in the book I Robot.
You really can't get the full visual impact this movie had when it was released in theaters since it was in Cinemascope with stereophonic sound .. Great movie in the day
Dang I wish I could've seen it that way. Some movies are best on the big screen, though I can blow'em up here on my computer with my face just inches away . . . In 1956, I was still too young [not quite 2].
Amazingly Advanced film for its time. Truly our answer to the film Metropolis. And to imagine Leslie Nielsen was the chief character from the ship, and a completely serious role
Some great acting here. The humans are both amused and unnerved by the robot. But what I think is so good is that it subverts expectations, and doesn't reveal the robot as some evil killing machine.
Robby, and the robot from Lost in Space were actually designed by a guy who's full time job was designing old style round washing machines. Can you tell? lol
Note 'fasten seat belts" command in a land vehicle - this half a decade before American-made cars were required to even have seat belts - in the front seat only!
The guy comments that Robby "looks after us like a mother". Interesting coincidence with "I Am Mother", which I just watched. Very interesting plot about having a robot as your mother from the beginning of life. Plot twists are just right. So when I heard that about how Robby looks after them like a mother something clicked.
The ship's commanding officer - early to mid 30's - robs the cradle! Ann Fancis's character has to be only 18 based on the chronology of the story. Legal tender, but still not old enough to have a beer on Earth - at least not in most US states at the time, and now drinking age is 21 everywhere.
In those days women were getting married and having children around 17. My day was 21 and my mom was 17. I guess it was a grass on the field mind set. They had 8 kids and 25 grand kids. Married for life. So it wasn't all bad.
@@johnwood406 in my farming community in Canada all but one girl was pregnant by 15.5. I was in LA by then and we'd get the local newspaper. All it meant was they were milking the cows down the road, not dad and mom's. And don't get me started on the LA Latinos. They were ready to go by 14. Jessica Simpsons sister was married and pregnant (not nec. in that order) but it was either Kentucky or Arkansas so same thing.
@@ryan7864 Pretty much. Which is why I said the right hand and actors. Robocop remake wasn’t that bad. Someone who could emulate Morbius (Walter Pigeon) well would be a good start.
Ever since I was little, it annoyed me when he said he is monitored when he should have said he is programmed. That's the only fault I have with this otherwise excellent movie!
