In his recent book, Working, Robert Caro-the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author of monumental biographies of Robert Moses and Lyndon Johnson-gives a rare glimpse into his own life and work. Caro’s classic The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York was named one of the 100 greatest books of the 20th century by Modern Library. He has written four of a planned five volumes of the acclaimed The Years of Lyndon Johnson. Caro speaks with Kai Bird, executive director of the Leon Levy Center for Biography.
Presented on October 15, 2019, with the Leon Levy Center for Biography.

The interviewer would rather hear his own voice than get Caro's responses

This guy, Kai Bird (who I had never heard of until I watched some of this....) reminds me of that Anthropology joke about the postmodern ethnographer. What did the postmodern anthropologist tell his native informant? Enough about you, lets talk about me! This is the interviewer in a nutshell. Every question begins with him talking about himself....give it a rest....such a drag queen....

The interviewer seems more interested in interviewing himself. To me he is very irritating, and I don't want to listen to him. I want to hear from Mr Caro. That said, I do want to thank you for your programs.

Absolutely, too many of these have long blowhard introductions and then have interviewers who think it is all about them.

The interviewer sounds like he has never read Caro's books.

Caro is asked the same questions, and gives the same answers, in every interview.

Absolutely, all the Caro victory laps are really flakey, he tells the same corny jokes over again and all the stories are the same as were in his books. Have read them all and they are good but no better or worse than many biographers who got finished and moved on.

Power works because human beings are so easily corrupted, and the power broker simply plays to their self interest to get what he wants. Every power broker knows how to play people and manipulate them to his ends. Sometimes to the good, more often to the ill.

Caro is so brilliant and dedicated to truth, besides being a great storyteller, you'd think someone at some point would have advised him to lose the dreadful Brooklynese accent. Otherwise he's fascinating to listen to.
