The Crawford story I like best comes from Cliff Robertson who was cast in a younger-man-older-woman film opposite Crawford and so had first-hand knowledge of the event. According to Robertson, the film's director was having a brief chat with the two stars about an upcoming scene and said it would be nice to have just one tear showing, to which suggestion Crawford simply asked: "Which eye?" Robertson said that that much acting mastery completly blew him away.

One of Joan Crawford's 30's films I loved was Sadie McKee. Made in 1934, and she was great in it. I'm surprised and disappointed it's not mentioned at all as one of her great early films along with Grand Hotel and Rain. I agree Sudden Fear and Autumn Leaves were two of her greatest later films.

I still have to see it. However, Robert mentions Sadie McKee as a favourite of his.

The best Joan Crawford biography released in awhile. Sadie McKee was my Crawford favorite film.

Many have said that, but I had some negative comments about the book being a rehash of others on Joan, but I don't think that's the case.

Have loved and enjoyed Crawford's career in films for most of my life now, but I'd have to say I love and am fascinated by her performance in the 1932 film 'Rain'. Such an incredible tour de force for her, and should have been @ least nominated for Best Actress that year! The firery tongue-lashing she gives Walter Huston @ the foot of the stairs is something that gains my ultimate respect for the lady. Damn, she was GREAT!! I've yet to read this book, but am looking forward to opening its covers and sinking right into its pages! "Thank you" for this warm presentation on an unforgettable star and lovely person so many of us wish we could have met.

I'd like to read/see a walkthrough of Her movie career, it's just too bad She didn't do a book; like so many Stars have, before She passed. 👌🏾✌️👍🏼

The photo on the book cover, I have another photo from that same sitting as the screensaver on my iPhone. It’s the same shot, but she’s looking directly at the camera. I think she had THE face of the 1930s. I’ve always been incapable of understanding how MGM did not see her as a talented actress. All you have to do is watch Grand Hotel. Garbo overacted dreadfully in that movie. Crawford was so natural, and genuine. She actually gave the best performance of any of the actors in that movie, in my opinion. And she was a much better actress than Norma Shearer, who always seems so phony to me in her roles. Anyhow, I plan to buy this book. When it comes to biographies of movie stars, I am always most interested in their path to fame, and what they did to get there. I’m very interested that this is the sole focus of the book.

I’m not as convinced as Robert Dance that Christina Crawford was more-or-less truthful. Her stories suffer from a lack of corroboration, aside from the endorsement by her wayward brother Christopher. I did enjoy reading Ferocious Ambition, though.

I don't know all of the details about it, so I can't comment.
@bigbandsrock1

The Concluding Chapter of Crawford, on-line has documented proof that Christina lied, and that movie was a sad catastrophe! While Joan would have been terribly hurt I think it would have been more appropriate had Christina released her book before Joan’s passing, as Joan could have then defended herself, but she was not here to do so, and so for those of us who love Miss Crawford so very much “Mommie Dearest will forever be a tragic ugly blotch on Miss Crawford’s life & career.

I'd rather not get into anything about Christina Crawford. I understand this is a divisive issue and Robert Dance's book isn't about that, even though he has a short chapter on it. This book is a celebration of Joan as an actor and how she crafted her career.

Normal Shearer's photographer was a magician. Not to be mean, but he literally worked miracles. Crawford was a hard worker and that will take you far. Jennifer Lopez is sort of the modern version of that imo.
