Interesting how they can give millions upon millions of dollars to one actor but refuse to pay the comic writers who wrote the stories they are adapting, or pay their VFX workers that they constantly abuse, their well earned money

It's ridiculous and just sad. The comic writers don't even ask for much just fair residuals and respect for their work that generates Marvel and Disney billions of dollars.

But it’s a direct correlation with the market demand. More people are watching the movies than reading the comics. Tell people to read the comics and the writers and artists will be paid in kind. Not my opinion, just facts. No one should be abused at their jobs but VFX teams are a dime a dozen.

I think RDJ COULD be a great Doctor Doom, but there are so many different actors out there, and yet they cast RDJ as Doom. This is the first time I feel like they put the actor first before the character.

people won’t be confused, audiences aren’t dumb, and this is a genius way of giving the character and casting a complete 180.. i don’t know why y’all hating so much in these comments when we all know Robert’s gonna murder this role and finally show us the Doom we deserve in live action, regardless of his long history as iron man and all the external factors troubling ppl with this casting . 🙏🏻💚

And you still think they weren’t desperate? RDJ said he would only work with the Russo’s. As of last month, Disney approached Shawn Levy for Avengers 5. This means they basically went to RDJ within this timeframe, and were ready to give him whatever he asked for to get him back. Sounds like the textbook definition of “desperation”.

To be fair we only heard rumors about Shawn Levy last month, and even if the rumors are true who knows when he was actually approached. This is still a Hail Mary move on Disney’s part, clearly a pivot happened at some point in their plan after the Jonathan Majors situation

In my opinion, recycling RDJ isn’t the only way for the franchise to be successful again. If they would have casted another A-lister to play Doom, I’m sure it would be just as good. I love RDJ but Dr.Doom needs his own identity outside of Stark.

Couple of things: 1. Doom has only been done in a movie 4 times. Not 5. (Corman, the two original Fox movies, then Fan4stic) 2. In those movies, he has NEVER been portrayed as “traditional.” Or classic Doom. (Maybe in the Corman movie, but like he said that barely counts.) 3. Why does John (and everyone else for that matter) seem convinced that RDJ being Doom automatically means that we are NOT getting a traditional and classic Doom? They have proven that they are cool with playing fast and loose with the definition of “Variant.” I’m pretty convinced that RDJ is gonna play Victor, not Tony. Maybe that is too hard for other people to warp their head around.

It’s going to be very confusing for people if he’s not playing a variant. Comic book fans may be able to wrap their heads around the fact that multiverse means different characters can look the same but I doubt that some in the audience will accept it without question.

@@prochetoshsanyal Chris Evan’s was a cameo and his FF role pre-existed the MCU. RDJr literally was the face of the MCU as Tony Stark and arguably still is. It’s a whole different story given he’s supposed to play such a major villain in two Avengers movies.

They have not done the traditional Dr. Doom 4 times. They've only done it once in the Corman movie. They changed Dr. Dooms origin in both the Chris Evans F4 and the Trank F4. Doom was a CEO in the Evans F4 and a computer scientist in the Trank F4. They have not done dictator of Latveria Dr. Doom except for the Corman film.

If will smith made 100 mil for Man in Black3, a capped 100 mil depending on box office for rdj is not ridiculous. The last time rdj+russos+avengers film got marvel nearly 5 Billion dollar in box office. If rdj ends up walking away with 200 mil, it likely means marvel just hit their second biggest pay day since endgame

Doctor Doom has never been done right, and this is again a step in the wrong direction. Taking one of the greatest comic characters and making him a variant of a different character, especially Tony, strips him of being his own individual character. To say the other movies were even trying to attempt a traditional Doom is laughable.

@spacechampi0n There's no guarantee they will cast other Dooms. Seems pretty clear that this is their main Doom, whether he's from 616 or not, is irrelevant. If it is a bait and switch and they have another Doom who is the main one, then sure. But making RDJ their main universe Victor reduces the character to just a Tony Stark variant.

The reason RDJ casting comes off as such a blatant Hail Mary is, we KNOW: 1. This wasn’t the original plan 2. The new F4 wasn’t going this way originally and may suffer for it 3. They spent years on a prolonged build to Kang 4. This is a very public, desperate pivot 5. It’s lazy AF

The Doctor Doom's in the 2005/2007 movies and the 2015 reboot were not "traditional", John. Comic book Doctor Doom is not the CEO of a company where he gets ousted from and has electricity powers, and he is not a computer hacker incel like he was in the 2015 movie. Marvel started with Robert Downey Jr. They built an empire in 20 years and one CEO who was not smart destroyed that in one year. To rebuild fast they need someone who people will watch and recognize. Who works as an actor and character. They will throw a truck of money at him and it still will be cheaper if they would rebuild it painfully slow without him.

Calling the other attempts at doctor doom “traditional” is laughable. Doing the traditional doctor doom WOULD be something new, because it hasn’t been done. RDJ as a Tony stark doctor doom variant could work, or it could be terrible. I think it’s a challenge to make that work. So we will see.

There MIGHT be a way to pull RDJ Doom off. Have him be masked all the time. He doesn't quip or even raise his voice unless absolutely necessary. This would also be some new ground in RDJ's acting range. Problems: 1. He might just end up mimicking Ed Norton from Kingdom of Heaven 2. Disney would NEVER let him be under that mask all the time. 3. He's Iron Man. No matter what happened, that's the guy who said "I am Iron Man". That's ruined now.

I heard from people who know nothing about comic books talking about RDJ coming back to play Dr Doom and how they’re excited. Casuals/mainstream do not care about accurate comic lore. The Avengers films will make bank so it’s pointless being upset about RDJ playing Doom. You should actually be upset at yourselves for letting Antman 3 flop that’s the real reason this situation is happening.

John still doesn't get it... It's not about the 5% nerds, it's about the 95% mainstream audience. Jon or Ray said it on Monday... The entire audience is going to be waiting for the hero arc (because RDJ IRON MAN GOOD GUY) that never comes. If anything, Doom becomes a bit of a bitch in SW. Let's play a game.. Imagine they announced Cilian Murphy as Doom: you get the same pop, hype but pay way, way less, no audience confusion and zero people asking "Omg why didn't they bring RDJ back" because literally nobody asked for this

like a great man once said, "Its not what you're worth, its what you negotiate". Good for him. As far as RDJ being Doom, I think the MCU has earned the respect (even if their recent slate of films hasnt been top tier) and right to try the Doom story this way as John stated that Doom the old way has been tried and failed. I think people should take a breath and lets see how it goes.

And ppl wonder why the budget for these flicks gets more and more out of control. With Secret Wars alone boasting an incredibly large cast, it stands to reason that its price tag will be exceedingly high. If it delivers as it's supposed to, it should be a massive hit (justifying the astronomical budget), but the margin of errors will be significantly reduced. Interesting to see how things will shake out there...

I disagree they've done a traditional Doom in the movies before. They've NEVER done a traditional Doom because those versions John mentioned weren't that either. They always shoehorned Doom's origin in with the Fantastic Four's; making his abilities and/or look come from the same place that gave the Four theirs. They never or rarely touched his Latverian origins or his mother and the more magical side of things. He's more than just another smart tech guy that puts on a "super" suit. Like John, I'm optimistic and I do see the genius of this choice, within the vacuum of the MCU and not acknowledging any prior comic book knowledge. However, as a massive Doctor Doom fan, I also really wanted it to be done right. Regardless, I hope RDJ delivers and rejoins himself on the list of "Cry baby casting choices that turned out iconic" i.e.. himself/Tony, Hugh/Wolverine, Keaton/Batman, Heath/Joker, etc.

I was thinking the same thing. I was hoping to get a slow build with a new actor who would play the hero - the savior of Latveria - in one movie who then turns bad in later movies. I will always wish for Doom to have gotten an entire saga of build up rather than this sudden appearance in two movies at the end of this Multiverse Saga.

This is all desperation. Yesterday you said Hugh Jackman coming back was not desperate so what makes RDJ different? Well how about the fact that Hugh called up Ryan to star as the same f**king character he was known as to us movie fans. RDJ was brought back by Marvel to star as a different character, to save their ass since he is a high profile actor and audiences love RDJ so it was a lazy and desperate move to bring him back. You think this was a stroke of genius? really! Not long ago there were the strikes about getting better pay for people who work on these films and paying 100 million to an actor just to come back is a stroke of genius? you must be on some high level drugs to BS that out! So Marvel has tried doing Doctor Doom the same way 4 times yes? I would argue the horrible Fantastic Four 2015 movie version was not the traditional way was it? how each character (Doom and others) got their powers was also different to the ones that came out in 2005 and now Marvel is going back to its original roots with Fantastic Four, if im not mistaken? and if so, why can't Marvel do the same with Doctor Doom? because DESPERATE, thats why!

Making RDJ the centerpiece of the MCU a second time is a mistake. Shows the studio heads have run into a wall and are lacking in genuine new ideas, not to mention afraid of taking real risks. For a guy with so many legal matters to his name (RDJ), the executives sure were quick to ditch Majors to the gutter as soon as it was convenient to do so. So we are just supposed to forget about Kang now? How does that work?

Cracks me up how John rolled his eyes at people using the word "Desperate". Literally the next day, the story drops that Disney threw the vault at RDJ to come back.
