Ty Seidule's mea culpa memoir, Robert E. Lee and Me, has generated the predictable supporters: mainstream media outlets, leftist dominated history departments, and neoconservative "intellectuals." This says more about Seidule than his book. He just wants to be loved. On the other hand, his book is a collection of half-truths and cherry picked propaganda designed to meet his "opinion" of Robert E. Lee, a word he often uses when asked about his positions on Lee and the South. This is predictable coming from a man who wrote the West Point Guide to Gender and Warfare. West Point graduate, General of the Army, and United States President Dwight Eisenhower called Lee one of the four greatest Americans in United States History. General Seidule thinks otherwise. As Phil Leigh explains in this video, we should listen to General Eisenhower, not the woke historian from West Point.

I recall Ty Seidule's PragerU video years ago which was little more then "The U.S. government and Army were all saints from 1861-1865, and Southerners should be thrilled that their county was invaded, their people killed or maimed, their land ruined, and that they were treated as conquered subjects and abused for a decade after." I suspected from that video's title that it was going to be your standard neo-con position on the war, but I was still shocked by just how childishly black-and-white Seidule's version was and is. I appreciate the Abbeville Institute's rebuke of Ty's latest revision of history!

@@dinosaurcj "Would you mind giving us an example? I'm intrigued, and I feel this could be very useful for future arguments." For a start, Japanese troops invaded. They eagerly employed terrorism against civilians--battlefield losses in particular were avenged on the civilian populace. They branded anyone who opposed them, down to the smallest statements, as a traitor and jailed them without trial or even executed them on the spot. They stole everything they could get their hands on (the Japanese Imperial Family still owns more than 50,000 Korean artworks, and private collections have much much more). They deliberately attempted to destroy Korean culture--for Korea it even went so far as rebuilding Korean buildings in Japanese style and forcing people to take Japanese names. They attempted to destroy Korean religion, in particular attempting to crush Christianity in favor of the Buddhism that they thought would be more supportive or neutral to their regime. And the rapes--rape upon rape upon rape; these fuckers loved them some rapin'. To this day Japan still makes claims on Korean land. It still claims that Korea was improved by its occupation, that Koreans should be grateful that they were forced out of their backwards ways, and that those who opposed Japanese rule were traitors. And they still deny the crimes they committed, especially and including the massive pile of rapes. 익숙한 드리나요?

Imagine being someone like “Ty Seidule” and devoting so much of your career to defaming the reputation of one of the greatest Americans in history. Good enough for Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Churchill, and even the men he fought against (like US Grant), but not good enough for “Gen.” Seidule? Okey dokey! And Eisenhower kept a painting of Lee in to Oval Office as president. “From deep conviction, I simply say this: a nation of men of Lee’s calibre would be unconquerable in spirit and soul. Indeed, to the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities, including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the Nation’s wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we, in our own time of danger in a divided world, will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained.” ~ Eisenhower. I am not a huge fan of my fellow Kansan as a president but he was correct about Lee.

All the salient details - great job, Mr. Leigh! The reader should be immediately suspicious on reading the title of Seidule's book: What's this "and Me" stuff? Can you imagine Churchill writing "World War II and Me" or Pershing writing "The War in the Trenches and Me"? My biggest disagreement and disappointment in PragerU was their decision to air BG Seidule's speech on slavery and the War Between the States (no, it was not a "civil war"). Professor Seidule looked fanatical and unhinged - suggesting that a harsher reconstruction would have worked out better for the nation. He selectively ignored racism in the US Armed Forces - which were not desegregated until 1948 by executive order - and this wasn't even put into practice until the Korean War was underway.

I agree fully with Mr. Leigh's assessment of Seidule's silly book, but not with his presentation of the facts. For example, Grant's quote Leigh cites expresses a contradiction plain to see. If the two sides were equal in numbers, then Grant's reliance on the principle of attrition would be stupid. Grant knew he could afford to throw away 60,000 lives into the fire and have the loss instantly replenished by the vast manpower pool of the adhering states. Lee, on the other, had no means of replenishing his losses in the butcher's relentless push upon Richmond.

He's ignoring all of Seidule's research and chooses instead to answer a very general question, "was Lee good or bad?", by pulling a couple of isolated quotes out of context. First, no responsible historian would approach his subject in terms of making a value judgement, and Seidule did not do this. Instead, he dispassionately examines the myth that has grown up around Lee (as similar myths have grown up around all of the major figures of the Civil War, including Lincoln and Grant), and looks for the root causes of the myth's creation and perpetuation. Second, you can't pull a single quote out of a single editorial that appeared in a single Northern newspaper and conclude that Northerners generally thought that Grant was a butcher, just as you can't pull a single quote from Grant about how Lee is admired in the South and conclude that Lee had the respect and admiration of the entire officer corps of the Union army. What you're seeing is an amateur who doesn't understand historiography trying to take down Seidule simply because Seidule's conclusions clash with the amateur's prior beliefs. But Seidule is a highly respected historian, author of numerous books and articles that have undergone endless peer review, and the former head of the history department at West Point. That's not a role that's given to people with sloppy scholarship, or leftist polemicists. It's a position that Seidule earned through years of rigorous, dispassionate scholarship. And the guy trying to take him down? Never heard of him.
@abbevilleinst
@abbevilleinst 3 года назад
Seidule's books have not undergone "endless peer review." His publication record is almost entirely through West Point and focused on textbooks. Moreover, Seidule's "research" is mostly through secondary sources, some of which are hilariously bad, and is "sloppy scholarship." Take for example his note on the Second National Confederate Flag, note 9, page 17. His source is a book by George Preble, one of the worst Union Naval commanders during the War, and the quote that he cites does not appear on page 416-17 but later in the book. This is just one example of a "professional historian" writing a long op-ed polemic with "sloppy scholarship." I wouldn't say Seidule is "highly respected." Until he made the Prager U video on the War, no one had heard of him.
@insidedigitalmedia
@insidedigitalmedia 3 года назад
I have been watching Seidule for about four years and have been by no means "ignoring" his research. Four years ago I asked him directly and respectfully to discuss our differences in front of his West Point class. He declined. He told me to go and produce my own video to respond to his Prager one. First I went and wrote my "Southern Reconstruction " book and have now responded to his book with a video as well as two other books: "U.S. Grant's Failed Presidency" and "Causes of the Ciivl War." I did not pull out quotes for an editorial. Unlike Seidule-who has not read any of mine-I read his book before writing the first word of the script to this video.
