After King Crimson disbanded in 1974, Robert Fripp took a break from the public eye. However, his move to New York in 1978 marked his return as a producer, solo artist, and collaborator with notable musicians such as Daryl Hall, Debbie Harry, Peter Gabriel, and David Bowie. Fripp released his first solo album, Exposure, in 1979, followed by two more solo records and the formation of The League Of Gentlemen in 1980. This eventually led to the reformation of King Crimson in 1981.
Exposure, Fripp's 1979 solo debut, is often regarded as a classic album. It came about through an invitation from David Bowie and Brian Eno, resulting in Fripp's appearance as the lead guitarist on Bowie's album Heroes. The album was originally conceived as part of a trilogy along with Daryl Hall's Sacred Songs and Peter Gabriel's second solo album, both of which were produced by Fripp.
Exposure faced delays in its release due to RCA postponing the release of Hall's album and Hall's manager insisting on removing some of his vocals from Exposure. When the album finally came out in 1979, it showcased a different side of Fripp compared to his earlier work with King Crimson. It featured a mix of songs, instrumentals, speech snippets, and sound collages, all tied together by an autobiographical/diary-like approach. Even amidst a period of innovative vinyl albums, Exposure stood out as a unique and captivating record.
Featuring contributions from: Barry Andrews, Phil Collins, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Daryl Hall, Peter Hammill, Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta, Sid McGinnis, Terre Roche and Narada Michael Walden.

When the night shows The signals grow on radios All the strange things They come and go, as early warnings Stranded starfish have no place to hide Still waiting for the swollen eastern tide There's no point in direction we cannot even choose a side I took the old track The hollow shoulder, across the waters On the tall cliffs They were getting older, sons and daughters Jaded underworld was riding high Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky And as the nail sunk in the cloud The rain was warm and soaked the crowd Lord, here comes the flood We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood If again the seas are silent in any still alive It'll be those who gave their island to survive Drink up, dreamers, You're running dry! When the flood calls You have no home, you have no walls In the thunder crash You're a thousand minds, within a flash Don't be afraid to cry at what you see The actors gone, there's only you and me And if we break before the dawn they'll use up what we used to be Lord, here comes the flood We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood If again the seas are silent in any still alive It'll be those who gave their island to survive Drink up, dreamers, You're running dry!

This album changed how I looked at music in a big way when I bought this as a freshman in college in 1979. Saw Robert in a London record store do his Frippertronics in the late winter/early spring of 1981 - visiting student from U.S. I was right in front of him - arm's length away. He bent over to doodle with something and a little spoon fell out of his pocket, and picked it up and handed it back to him. :)

so, funny story about how i discovered this song today. I fell asleep listening to Eno's Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks, Apple Music has this infinitely annoying thing that i can't turn off which keeps playing similar music after an album ends, and that very thing apparently went on long after i was asleep. so I was asleep and for some reason I half woke up at around 6am today and this song was on, it was such a weird experience because I SWEAR I've never heard it but as I was getting more aware I was like singing along the chorus and just loving the melody... now I'm actually listening to the song proper and it's amazing, I'm a little obsessed with it right now. that was just weird, but i thought I'd share it.

@@КолесовДмитрий-б9б I hadn't heard the original by Peter Gabriel before either; I will say though, now having heard both multiple times Fripp has the superior version, I'm afraid.

@rvantes6124 Original version from album of Peter Gabriel 1977 ("The Car") is different, Fripp never sang or played keyboards, he only participated in the arrangement. But on ALL live videos that I see - Peter Gabriel performs the Fripp version. Because it's the best.

This one is a whole lot more soulful than the original on how that was produced!

on peter gabriel 1 this song was operatic. here it emerges sparsley from dripping electronica and is all the more effective for it.

not really electronica, but Robert Fripp doing guitar improvisation onto sort of a makeshift looper he created using a tape machine, a process he's come to call "frippertronics". it's really beautiful, you should check out some more examples of it

I prefer the one from Peter's "Car" album due to Ezrin's big production. But this is also excellent. Gotta love some Frippertronics. Exposure is a very cool rekkid. And then Fripp and Gabriel made the incredible "Scratches" album.

Very-very great song, but it is not written by Fripp - just Peter Gabriel, 1977. RF is mentioned.

The Rockpalast TV version seems superior to me. Better pacing, his voice isn't drown out at various points by the background synth (guitar?). Also, at around min 2:20 'drink up dreamers" the volume on word 'drink' is low, and 'dreamers' the pitch is slightly high.

Sorry, doesn’t do it for me. The original has so much more impact, and the majestic guitar solo is dearly missing here.
