I saw Robert as King Arthur in Camelot in the late '90s. He was fabulous, but of course, when it came time for this song, I so wanted to hear him sing it instead of the fellow who was playing Lancelot. I was delighted when, after the play was finished, Robert came out onstage and sang "If Ever I Would Leave You." What a thrill!! I'll never forget it.
True story. My folks went to see Camelot in Boston. After the performance, they ran into then Senator John F. Kennedy in the hallway of their hotel. Never a shrinking violet, my Mom, while talking with the Senator in the elevator, told him how handsome he was - "but could never hold a candle to Robert Goulet - or sing as well." The Senator chuckled and agreed (he had seen Camelot). My Dad just tried to become part of the wallpaper. : )
His voice was unbelievable and hearing this brings tears to my eyes. In 1977 I was 18 and stopped in Las Vegas with my friends. We bought tickets to see Robert Goulet and they sat us at a table up front. You can't imagine my joy when he picked me out and sang "If Ever I Would Leave You" to me! I was brought up on the Camelot Broadway Cast Album and I used to play it while doing my chores when I was growing up. That song is still my favorite from that album. Oh, and he kissed my hand! My friends still make fun of me because I was so shy and embarrassed, I almost fainted on the spot! Thank you for posting this.
he did the same to me in Vegas. He sang "That Face" to me and kissed me on the cheek-- i had loved him since i was 13. I finally saw him in my early 30's in Vegas
I had a friend who set up a bubble bath in the back of his house in the black ghetto of Boston, a small table on either side of the tub, on them, a .38 and a .45. In the windows of his house, he had "If ever I would leave you" playing on a 900 watt stereo with the speakers aimed out into the ghetto as he relaxed naked in the tub, the ghetto reverberating with Lerner and Lowe.... He was waiting, just to find out who would go back there and tell him to turn the music down!
That is a wonderful story. My Mother and I sat next to him at a table in Manhattan. We were polite and pretended to not see him but we did not eat one bite, lol. sigh. I miss him and I miss Carol Lawrence.
I've seen/heard a number of male Sir Lancelots sing this song, but none can come close to Goulet's rendition. Even posthumously, he still owns this song.
The younger generation needs to know that this very song in this very musical made Robert Goulet famous for the rest of his blessed life. What a voice!
i feel so honored, mrs goulet, to have had you reply to my comments..my heartfelt best to you....it is so wonderful and generous of you to dedicate a site to him, at the same time, it must bring tears to you...it does to me..it seems he was so young to leave the planet and contributed so very much and in so many annonymous ways...he was heaven sent, i'm sure ROBERT GOULET THE MAN AND HIS LEGACY
It is my pleasure. Dedicating a site to his legacy warms my heart knowing that his talent is appreciated. And yes, it is bittersweet, and some of the videos do make me very sad realizing that he is no longer physically present. VG
If ever I would leave you It wouldn't be in summer. Seeing you in summer I never would go. Your hair streaked with sunlight, Your lips red as flame, Your face with a lustre That puts gold to shame! But if I'd ever leave you, It couldn't be in autumn. How I'd leave in autumn I never will know. I've seen how you sparkle When fall nips the air. I know you in autumn And I must be there. And could I leave you Running merrily through the snow? Or on a wintry evening When you catch the fire's glow? If ever I would leave you, How could it be in springtime? Knowing how in spring I'm bewitched by you so? Oh, no! not in springtime! Summer, winter or fall! No, never could I leave you at all!
I met him one summer working as a maid in a hotel near the Valley Forge Music Fair where he was appearing. I remember how gracious he was as we cleaned his suite. Talked to us as if we were friends. What a sweet man and oh those blue eyes! They melted my heart! I was only 20 and just loved him from listening to Camelot. I got to see him much later in Camelot as king Arthur and he still had the voice. never lost it!
I love this. Took my Mom and Stepmom to see him in Don Quixote he was amazing. Sadly he left us shortly after that. So did my Mom and lost my Stepmom 3 yrs ago. They both loved him, me too!
Saw him in Vegas once. His voice was simply magnificent! He greeted the audience after the show, and he was a very nice guy, too. Wish he'd lived longer.
Absolutely superb. Every word could be distinguished, every note filled with meaning. He could handle the long phrases with excellent breath control. Just a perfect performance. I wonder if he could have tried opera.
Flawless! Mr. Goulet still sounded amazing, when he sang this again in 2007 at his last concert, before his passing! One of the best voices of all time!
I met him after seeing him as King Arthur when I was just a little boy. Could not have been a nicer man. Sat there and talked with me for the longest time.
My aunt was a huge Robert Goulet fan and as a young kid she told me about Camelot and the show he sang this song in. I remember thinking how lucky this guy was to be so handsome and sing like he did.
I have loved Robert Goulet's voice since I was a teen-ager in the 1960's. Living in the Deep South, I heard a lot of Country music, rock'n'roll and bluegrass, but the power and the purity of his delivery could not be denied. He made the lyrics come alive! And what a song! The words bring tears to my eyes and make my heart swell with emotion because they are so real and so true for me. I would not want to live without my wonderful wife of 46 years.
My god what a voice! I had the pleasure of appearing in Camelot as a page in my youth on Broadway right after Robert,Richard and Julie left.Decades later he came to RI and played King Arthur where I met him briefly after explaining my experience in the play. What a fine gentleman he was with an incredible voice! It was a pleasure to meet him.
This is from the Ed Sullivan Broadcast along What do the Simple Folk do? After that broadcast the show really took off on Broadway. Imagine seeing Goulet, Julie Andrews and Richard Burton all live on stage ???
Moss Hart...Lerner and Lowe...Richard Burton...Julie Andrews...Our Bobby here...Roddy McDowell...Has there ever been so much TALENT in ONE show? I was just kid in the early 60s and I know my mother played the soundtrack 5000 times
When we listen to something like this we sometimes forget to give due credit to the composer, the lyricist and even the director, all of whom deserve a ton. No Broadway star who was showcased in a Lerner and Lowe vehicle, ever needed to make lemon-aide out of lemons. No, this was the nectar of the Gods, poured before them. Goulet, Andrews and Burton made the most of it, to be sure, but the material was sitting right on the pages they received. Andrews was twice blessed, of course.
Brian Turner Well said Brian. I have to say I am a writer myself, so I have a dog in this fight. These shows, like books, screenplays, songs, musical scores do not just write themselves. What is the blessing of living in our time and technology is that we will continue to enjoy fabulous talents forever
March 27, 1967 my twin sister and I received front row seats to see Robert Goulet--we were seniors in high school and in LOVE with this guy. I bet we listened to the Broadway musical album “Camelot” a thousand times. At one point he came to the edge of the stage, sat down in front of us and sang..to us. We were in HEAVEN! That voice, those blue eyes!
I was just a little kid when this was on TV. I was supposed to be in bed but snuck out in the hall when I heard Richard Burton singing Camelot. When Robert Goulet came out and sang this...well I had my first crush and it lasted for many years. I still adore his voice all these decades later.
Hello from Ukraine! I've discovered Robert Goulet just several weeks ago. He is so great. And his voice, and the music... Have a goose bumps when hearing this song. Brilliant, awesome, spectacular.
I blipped this song on blip fm radio as my parents sang this 3 weeks before my mother died- RIP mom- I miss you every minute. . . .and daddy is traversing down dementia drive. . .
I hear this song, and there is only one and only one who sing this song with the power, feel, and clarity, and that was Robert Goulet! It is almost as if the song was personally written for him. As I hear others trying to sing this song, they just can measure. But then Bob was one of those voices and acts that happens once in a life time
Absolutely spine tingling and stunning! Now this is music. What a fabulous artist! I miss the depth, power and nuanced quality of Robert Goulet's artistry.
By some quirk, I decided to listen to the original cast of "Camelot" at work today. When "If Ever I Would Leave You" played, I hoped that there would be no intrusion that would require me to remove my earbuds and stop listening. I was overcome with emotion and brought to tears hearing Mr. Goulet sing this again. A flood of memories hit me: the purity of his voice, and the yearning he expressed; the time in the early '60's during which musicals of this type were well received; the hopes for the future, as my generation looked forward to the "new frontier." It is amazing what music can evoke, and this performance never fails to stir my feelings and quicken my heartbeat. Thank you so very much for making this video accessible to those who never had the chance to see Robert perform, as well as those of us who cherish his talents.
Thank you for posting this, Vera. Few people would know from this how difficult this song is to sing. Believe me, as a baritone who had to sing this at a wedding reception in the 70's it's full of pitfalls for the singer. Robert negotiates each phrase with his usual aplomb.
I was nine years old when my Mom played a record with this song on it. I cried hearing it and adored the man who sang it. I'm over 50 now and still can't imagine anyone ever doing this song justice like Robert. His voice has such depth and feeling. R.I.P. to a remarkable talent.
When I began taking vocal lessons, this was the first song I learned. So beautiful. Robert Goulet was a talent that the rest of us baritones can only aspire to.
Absolutely Spectacular! And he's stunning to look at. The best male models around don't come close. It's really lovely to read these comments and find out he was a really nice person as well. What a gem.
I had to get my fix! Such a magnificent voice! He puts the rat pack to shame! My father had a lovely voice with a broad range, too. When he went into the marines, as service was mandated in those days, he was part of a barbershop quartet. He wanted to fight in Korea, but his commander refused. There was a competition and only my father could sing the bass! He joked about it later, but it probably saved his life. So now I say thank you to Robert , as he was such an inspiration. Love and kisses.
Wow--what a voice!! My grandma had an album, of the soundtrack from "Camelot", and I used to listen to it all the time--such wonderful music. Robert Goulet, Julie Andrews, and Richard Burton--tremendously talented people!!😊💒
I was so glad as a 13 year old my foster parents would load us in the car, we'd listen to WSB-Atlanta and hear these great artists! Here I was a Top 40 listener learning to really love these artists I'd have never been exposed to on my favorite stations! This man could really belt it out!
For me,always one of the greatest singers, such a wonderful sound and beautiful diction. This man could sing the telephone directory and make it spectacular.
*THIS performance is Mr. Goulet's finest ever, in this song - even eclipsing his OBC album rendition. *At least, of all those I've ever heard, live, on tv, and on recordings.
Loved watching this. They don't make musicals like this any more. I read that when Robert showed up for his audition, he showed up in blue jeans. The production staff was taken by his voice, youth & casual style & that landed him the role. And of course it afford him the opportunity to work with two greats...Julie Andrews & Richard Burton, not to mention former child star Roddy McDowell.
the voice soo deep soo sweet My favorite play my favorite cast I saw Robert in the fantasticks in Scranton PA the play was ok however hearing Robert sing Try to Remember was well worth the admission price
I have always loved his voice and he's my 7th cousin 1X removed. His voice is truly blessed from God Allmighty Himself. Melt ......One of my favorite songs of all time.!!!Thank you Vera And I love you Too. Very Much.
As a child of the 90s the first time I heard Robert Goulet sing was in the cartoon 'Recess' where he occasionally performed the singing voice for one of the characters Mikey. His rendition of Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen literally took my breath away even as a 9 year old child. I still sing it to this day. I'm now 23 and have a degree in music, and Mr Goulet is one of my favourite baritones. He left a lasting mark on myself and I imagine quite a few others my age who were introduced to him through that one simple cartoon. :)
Bob Goulet singing this song is one of my wife's favorites. Bob was generous with his time, his talent, and his money for children's charities and for that I will remember and honor him.
+Allen Morgan Thank you for your kind comment Allen. And yes he was very generous in so many ways. Please keep visiting my husband's channel. Vera Goulet
That is a beautiful song! Robert Goulet had a great and powerful singing voice! Brings tears to my eyes! RIP and sleep with the angels! Robert Goulet was so very handsome when he was young! And he aged very gracefully!
I fell in LOVE with him in The 60's He was my IDOL forever and to this day. There will NEVER be a better Sir Lancelot. Or a better singer. I will always LOVE HIM ❤️💋
