A great album, but this track is,by far, the best on the album. This Wouldham made a fantastic single, but the beauty with listening to a full album is finding hidden gems like this.
Saw him with Johnny Klegg and Savuka at the Avalon in Chicago in 1986. General admin, got to be right up against the stage, he was amazing. Barely moved but owned the room and sounded incredible. I had slipped on some stairs on the way and chipped my tailbone, I was in agony but honestly all I remember was the great music and how wonderful it was. So glad I pressed on and went.
Never understood WHY this song didn't get more play. Fantastic sound effects and rhythm. The whole album was very good. BTW:"Riptide" would have made the perfect song in a movie prologue.
I don't remember how I heard about it. But I bought this single when it came out (I think it was the first single from the album). I caved and bought the album when "Addicted to Love" was released. GREAT CHOICE! Definitely one of my top 20 '80s albums! Amazingly, when I moved to M05c0w I met a 30 year younger beauty who was into only '70s and '80s music (she actually taught ME most of what I know about Alan Parsons and she goes to his concerts whenever she can!). Riptide was in her collection on vinyl. We are married now and still love listening to this album together on our drives through Central Europe. I think one reason she married me is because I am her looking glass back into her favourite era of music.
Andy only played a few overdubbed bits on Addicted to Love. 98% of the guitar on the Riptide album, including this song, was played by the underrated Eddie Martinez. I love Andy Taylor, but it's an urban legend that he even played all of Addicted to Love, let alone anything else on the album. Tony Thompson likewise didn't play on this track. He played the majority of the album but Dony Wynn played drums on this one, with Guy Pratt on bass.
Is this video all about him trying to find the bathroom at a club? Does he even know where he's trying to go? LUL RIP, Robert. Your vocal work is classic
I'd gladly listen to this man over and over again for the rest of eternity than listen to even five minutes of the utter crap they call music these days. RIP Mr. Palmer.
All of you 47 dislike discipline of love by Robert Palmer young all y'all need to get disciplined BEST JAM SONG EVER 👍 THAT IS A TOTAL DISRESPECT FROM A MAN IN THE GRAVE 💀 !
don't know if anybody notices, how heavy this track was... the drum seems to be crshing ,from the heavy beat and the guitar is just tough ....today this would be considered metal ...incredible to know, that on the same record he ha "dint mean to turn you on" as well
I didn't realise that this was the first single from the "Riptide" album. It's a shame that it didn't do much in the charts because it's a fantastic track with fantastic instrumentation, especially that Synth bass, or is it a bass guitar run-through effects pedals? Either way, it's a fantastic part of this song. Mr Robert Palmer was a fantastic singer in his own right and fronting The Power Station.
I would very much appreciate to know who chose to dance to the amazing Robert Palmer? You have very fine music taste! From someone who knows a lot of fellow UK musicians
Believe it or not, this was actually the first song from "Riptide" to be released as a single, before "Addicted To Love." Only reached #82 on the Billboard Hot 100.
#Robert Palmer #didn't have to die because he left memories like discipline of love I need to think that he was my age at 58 and now he's gone let's not forget about those who are resting in peace permanently 😭
@Sue Clark Robert Palmer was never engaged to Geraldine Edwards. Most of the information online about his personal life was written after his death and completely fabricated. Ms. Edwards tried to dispel the rumors but not effectively. He was very much involved with Mary Ambrose who was with him when he died. The information written about her is also fabricated, why I haven’t a clue. It has done a disservice to her and Mr.Palmer.
