ROBERT'S TIE-DYED EASTER EGGS
Pinterest Board: / tie-dyed-eggs
Materials:
Raw Eggs
100% Silk Ties
Muslin
Pipe Cleaners or Plastic Twist Ties
White Vinegar
Water
Tools:
Scissors and/or Seam Ripper
Non-aluminum Pot
Tongs or Spoon
Directions:
1. Cut ties into 7 to 8 inch segments -- each tie yields approximately 6 segments. Open along the back seam using scissors or a seam ripper. Remove and discard tags and lining.
2. Wrap a raw egg with a piece of tie silk, making sure the front printed side of the material is facing the egg, and secure gently but tightly with a twist tie or a short length of pipe cleaner. The silk does not need to fit perfectly around the egg.
3. Wrap the silk-wrapped egg in a square of muslin fabric and secure gently but tightly with a twist tie or a short length of pipe cleaner.
4. Place the wrapped eggs in a non-aluminum pot and fill with enough water to cover completely. Add 3 tablespoons of white vinegar to the water.
5. Bring the water to a boil, then turn down the heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove the eggs with tongs or a spoon and set aside to cool.
6. After the eggs have cooled, undo the twist ties and unwrap the eggs.
Helpful Tips:
• Vintage silks ties can easily and inexpensively be purchased at thrift stores.
• Silk blouses or scarves will also work beautifully.
• Instead of purchasing muslin for the outer wrappers, you can also repurpose old t-shirts -- which can then be used as cleaning rags after the project.

i am so glad you suggested multiple tools as well as tips like the pot! It made it seem much more doable than if you used fancy things like some other kin videos :) enjoyed it a lot!

I think I saw this on Martha Stewart, she used silk handkerchiefs,, she placed in the middle of it and twisted the top and secured with a rubberband. I love the result, i want your job LOL

I'm not completely sure but as a fibers major I can defiantly say fabric dyes are completely different from FDA authorized food-safe dyes. In fact, fabric dyes use many chemicals and can often be toxic.

I don't celebrate Easter (or any holiday that has pagan roots) BUT I love this craft. This would be something I would do to make boiled eggs NOT Boring. So thank you!! However I do have a question. Does the paint from the neck ties ever seep through the shell and get onto or into the egg itself?

Can you use drained eggs? (Just whole egg shells)
@maybellique
@maybellique 11 лет назад
Those are very beautiful, but I think that would be too much effort for a mere Easter egg hunt. Do we have to hard boil them beforehand? Is this cooking process to simply set the color, or is that actually when the egg is cooked thoroughly? If they're supposed to be pre-cooked, wouldn't over-cooking them ruin the taste? Are they even edible? lol. So many questions unanswered, but I'm definitely interested. Looks like something for a fancy part. ;-D

You don't have to take my word for it, but I can't imagine they are safe to eat since they don't always dye clothes with food safe dyes.
