The harmony is trouble from the very beginning. This quartet is very expressive. The quartets of Schumann do not have the rank that they deserve. This quartet is without any doubt a masterwork.
This quartet is a tremendous burst of risk-taking and creativity that is characteristic of Schumann's chamber music. It demands a great deal musically from players, and once they can meet those demands, it invites them to take risks and be creative with it as the composer was. This wonderful recording takes risks and does some really interesting things musically -- the Terpsycordes has clearly spent some time with the piece and thought a lot about it.
This quartet is beautiful from the first bars with itheir broken cadence to the end. Ths interpretation is awesome. It puts in light all the subtle touch of genius that Schumann put in this quartet. The tempo iis a bit slower than usual, but the beauty of the first movement is put into full light at that tempo.
