For 50 years, Don Gifford and Robert J. Seidman's Ulysses Annotated: Notes for James Joyce's Ulysses has been an invaluable resource for students and readers. The volume, which serves as an encyclopedia of references, literary allusions, and gloss provides important context for the classroom, and anyone endeavoring to read Joyce's canonical tome. Robert Seidman will be in conversation with Vicki Mahaffey to discuss the origins and impact of this volume over the past five decades.
Robert J. Seidman is a novelist, an Emmy-winning screenwriter, and a literary critic. With Don Gifford, he is the co-author of Ulysses Annotated: Notes for James Joyce’s Ulysses. Seidman's film credits include Lush Life: Billy Strayhorn, a documentary that won the Writers' Guild Award for Best Documentary Script, a George Foster Peabody Award, and an Emmy. He lives in New York City.
Vicki Mahaffey is the Clayton and Thelma Kirkpatrick Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the English Department. She taught for 27 years at the University of Pennsylvania and held Chair of Modern Literature at the University of York, UK, for two years before moving to Illinois. She holds a PhD from Princeton University and her forthcoming book, The Joyce of Everyday Life, will be published by Bucknell University Press in the spring of 2024.
