A quick look at the Robert Sorby ProEdge sharpening system which Robert Sorby were kind enough to lend me for this review.
Less of a review really, I simply take a look at its main features and demonstrate the sharpening of woodworking chisels as well as shapening skews and a fingernail grind on a bowl gouge, two jobs which can be particuarly difficult for woodturners.

Just to clarify this tool is on LOAN whist I do the review. Whether I decide to buy it or not we will have to wait and see. :P £250 is a lot of money, but is very similar to many other sharpeners. Alex

Very good point my friend, I believe that you can get a honing wheel attachment if you are looking for those results but you are right that straight off the belt they are not that sharpe.
@thiswoodwork
@thiswoodwork 12 лет назад
Very true, that could be done using the 240 belt just before the final pass on the edge or using the honing wheel attachment.
@thiswoodwork
@thiswoodwork 12 лет назад
Woodcraft definatly sell it but it is over $500. So there is no doubt that it is an up-market sharpener. Puts it in the same price bracket as the Tormex and those sorts of sharpeners.
@thiswoodwork
@thiswoodwork 12 лет назад
If you buy a belt sander I guess you could modify it so it could give some better results.
@thiswoodwork
@thiswoodwork 12 лет назад
Fair enough, I have seen ones about going for £250 but you are correct in saying they are likely to be more around the £315 mark. Was it me who blocked you or someone else? Anyways, stick to what you prefer this was just just a look at one type of sharpening system there are a number of other to consider. Alex

Hey, how much would you say a slow speed grinder with diamond wheel would go for. It may be worth taking a look, thanks.
@kickpublishing
@kickpublishing 9 лет назад
Too much sodding about swapping belts IMHO - rather have multiple wheels on a bench grinder and go from one to the next without even turning it off
@thiswoodwork
@thiswoodwork 12 лет назад
Fair point my friend, this video may be useful for some, we shall see! The guy that suggested getting in contact with Robert Sorby about this machine did in fact modify his own beltsander to perfrom the same function. I will prob not do a video on the lathe as it can be a bit boring watching product overviews like this, I will however hopefully do a little article on the website at some point. Alex
@thiswoodwork
@thiswoodwork 12 лет назад
Actual grinder is a lot cheaper, with the addition of the wheel the price works out about the same. Because of this I think it just comes down to prefrence.

I did following the video, dicounted price but I did in fact spend my own money on this machine.

I have one but I don't think it is as good I thought it was going to be putting the skew to the left side is awkward and as a tool gets smaller it gets worse.

Ha! Robert Sorby asked for my input actually and that is exactly what I said to them.

very nice video, wish they would send me one :) oh! if you want a true long grind on your bowl gouge first you need to re leave the top edge of the tool to create a slightly more pointed cutting edge at the tip. other wise your wings will be to steep and when you get a catch it will be nasty, don't ask me how i know LOL.
@thiswoodwork
@thiswoodwork 12 лет назад
Certainly did, it was only a matter of time before someone noticed. :P

I built my own wooden sorby copy. Not as compact as this, but I got three speeds and the ability to choose between a pretty large belt range (780-1100mm), it works pretty great, I still need to build that fingernail jig.

Heat denatures steel, and friction of dry belts is basically grinding and friction creates LOTS of heat. This can give you a sharp edge but it will be a weak edge that will quickly blunt - unlike a wetstone that creates a razor sharp edge that is true hardened steel - only downside of a wetstone is the mess and water everywhere

I have, i think I'll go with a grinder, they're mostly cheaper than these sanders and more durable to heavier work, Thanks anyway.

The people who use these seem to swear by them. The big advantage is the speed it takes to sharpen over a wheel such as a tormek. I have been mulling over buying one or buying a disc belt sander and rigging up some jigs.

Friendly Tip: I'm not sure, but it sounds like your microphone is right in front of your mouth when you are recording. If you were to move the microphone to either side, it might help to stop that *poof* sound when you make 'P' sounds and the like. Cheers.

If the tool steel is of a good quality it should handle the heat and keep its temper. But if its not a good quality TS it will loose its temper and become like normal steel.

A wet grinding machine will give you better results and is better for your tools. Dry grinding is always bad if you want to have a really sharp edge.

Ya, I'm no genius, it's a pretty obvious flaw. I don't know how it made it into production that way. As I said before, it looks great otherwise. I'd like to have 5 of them so I could have a different grit on each one. I'll buy them as soon as my money tree starts to bear fruit. : )

i bought one of these sharpeners two days ago. it is the best i've used. i restore antique pocket watches and clocks and this tool is ideal for shaping parts. it has many uses. the build quality is top notch.

since your comment previously was about cost. I'll use that argument for my defense. Why buy a grinding wheel which would cost many hundreds of quid, when you can buy a 300 quid belt sander with belt sanders which would cost much less?

Very good review, Alex. You have talent showing a tool and talking about its features, not everyone is good at that. It looks like a very good machine. The only thing about it that I don't like is the way they have the belt guard attached. They need to set it up so you just turn a catch and the guard hinges open. The current method of unscrewing 2 finger bolts is too slow and too inconvenient.

why would his opinion change at all whether it was free or he had to buy it? It's still a great piece of equipment and he did a great job of showing it/reviewing it! Sounds like somebody is jealous, he didn't get to demo one...

It seems very expensive for what it is, no matter how well it performs, As to the side guard, I suspect that many people will simply leave it off regardless of safety.

To be honest - giving you a sharpener is pretty much the same as paying you for the review. Really good job filming and reviewing it by yourself though. RU-vid is monetised, everyone knows that - and by reviewing, you're effectively advertising their product. So it's not necessary to add disclaimers such as - This isn't a review, no financial incentive, etc. Much better to just say - Here's an honest review...
@thiswoodwork
@thiswoodwork 9 лет назад
Jåsøn ß That's a fair point, but in this case I wasn't given the sharpener, it was on loan whilst I performed the review. I ended up liking it enough that I decided to pay for it, which after doing the review they sold to me for a discounted price. Which is similar I guess, but certainly not the same.

+Jåsøn ß Sir you've got strange notions about manufacturing companies and other businesses !… No they don't give away their products even when you did a good advertising job by, for instance, writing an article in a magazine. All the home appliances I wrote about in the course of 35 years of publishing / advertising we either given back to the company of bought from them with no rebate price most of the time !… Got paid by magazines form reviews, never got a cent from the manufacturers even under the form of presents… and certainly no trips to the Bahamas !!!…
