People should have just boycotted the cinema who were not showing it. Why should they get the support of Scots money, if the cinema can't support the people and country this film is actually about.
@bluesageful

History is History.....If we don't learn it, we're doomed to repeat it.....that said, A cinema's job is to SHOW A FILM....NOT make a political statement.. If a Theater doesn't want to show a film, it's either massively BAD, and won't make any money (in which case you can't blame em).....However, IF a film has great reviews and can make money, and the Cinema STILL won't show it, there is most certainly a FEAR factor there!

@SLICK Technically it is not against freedom of speech. This is like a radio station deciding not to broadcast the 'Rush Limbaugh Show' or a newspaper deciding not to print an article by the associated press. Personally I think this is a failed contract issue, either the cinema could not get as low a price as they want or they may have got caught fudging the numbers on previous contracts. Either way they can't show the movie because they do not currently have access to show it. Probably the first, wouldn't be the first time a company that almost monopolizes the market attempts brute force negotiation.

@SLICK, dude, it isn't the US. UK doesn't have that in the same way. Also, that doesn't mean what you think. The 2nd amendment states that you can't be prosecuted *by the government* for speaking out against it. If you post shit on social media about your employer, they can fire you. If you say someone did something illegal and are proven a liar, you can go to jail and they can sue you. If you yell FIRE in a crowded space and people get hurt, you can go to jail.

He was my 19th great grandfather. My parents grew up in Appalachia...Eastern Kentucky. The whole area is very clannish and doesn't much care for outsiders. But we honor our Scots-Irish heritage. Our Scots roots are deeply ingrained. Much of our "slang" and attitude is derived from our Scots ancestry.

I agree. My family moved from Denmark to Scotland way back, then were later displaced and came to America. My wife is English and she makes fun of me for identifying with my Scottish ancestry. In her view I am simply an American, but that is just my nationality, not my blood or heritage. In my heart I am a Scot more than anything else, I still have family in Dundee who came to visit America for the first time in 2016. I feel the vote for Scottish sovereignty and independence was very much influenced, if not rigged, and this only serves to enforce my suspicions. Look at BREXIT, it was voted for but nothing has changed. Now we have the information that Google has been censoring serches and RU-vid is demonetizing people for holding conservative, or Nationalistic beliefs. I hope it bites them in the arse.

As an American I’m not totally immersed in UK politics, but I find this type of censorship puzzling. One - it is about historical events centuries ago. Two - only a few years ago Scotland voted to stay part of the UK, a historical film is unlikely to change that opinion of current events. Either way I can’t wait for the film to make it across the pond, I will be there with bells on!

I think that if ticket sales were a concern the company would release a statement about concern over commercial viability. But I think that if that was the concern they would at least test it in a few larger markets before deciding not to show it in their theaters. Especially now that some controversy has been generated.

YEs I am one from the Edmonstons, my grandmother descended from....well I wont brag...my grandmother told me but once I got trained as a scientist, everything had to follow the scientifc method for me. I doubted the family legends there were few details. In the1970s I visited family they had a genealogist trace our family back to Colonial Maryland . Only last year with records available on the internet I researched intensively and found evidence. AS a scientist and not a historian I cannot have TOTAL faith in historical records esp.primary sources I have not seenmwith mymown eyes.Yet....I have the heart of warrior for sure, determination to spare, Scots stubbornness my husband teases me. But I am proud of my Scots roots whether they in truth WERE far back descended from families of importance. Doesnt matterthat much.bec. I am for certain Scots, though American born. Saw the film and enjoyed it...thanks for the review...wish I understood how any Scot living today would not WANT Independence, but it should be your choice , not imposed from outside Scotland. I'll definitely see this movie when it's released in the States...I loved Angus Macfadyen in Braveheart:) There has to be something political to this decision by Cineworld. It makes no sense at all, and given that other movies have been "censored" or delayed in Scotland before, it seems likely something fishy is going on. I'm also really surprised Scottish people wouldn't be interested in movies or TV based on Scottish history.

My first thought was to say 'Freedom!' based on your title page. In the tiny town I live in there are 2 ratty cinemas owned by a very conservative Mormon family. They never show R rated films or controversial films. 14 miles north is Park City. Home of the Sundance Film Festival. They show tons of great movies. I don't know why the worry about historical Scottish movies or Outlander, when you've been part of the UK for so long. Didn't the majority of Scotland vote to stay in the EU? I just don't see Brexit happening at this point, but I'm across the pond. I think Scotland should be proud of it's history! We are! I am eagerly awaiting the release of Robert the Bruce in the US! Politically, I think that the whole Brexit flop has resulted in a motivated suppression from the top, down Scotland's continued hankering for independence is a thorn in the UK's eye. Making movies (regardless of the historical value) that show those emotions, just make it more obvious how the general public feels! Maybe it's more that the cinematic chain doesn't have the cajones, to show the movie? Maybe they're actually scared? Whatever happens, it might be about time to consider... Hey Shaun. A bit of a new comer to your channel, so I am responding to older videos. Since there was censorship regarding Outlaw King, I have to assume that there is in this case as well, but that's not my main point. It is about the actor, one of the faces of Scotland, Angus MacFadyen. There was a short 3 season series about the spies of the American Revolution on AMC called TURN. Don't know if you've seen it or heard of it, but Mr. MacFadyen played a very famous Scottish-American, Robert Rogers. He was born in New Hampshire, very effective in the New England wilderness and had good relations with some of the Native American tribes in the area. He fought in the Seven Years War, what we call in North America the French and Indian War, on the side of the British, the Colonists and their Native American allies against the French and their Native American allies. But when the Colonists decided to go for independence from Great Britain, he initially sided with The Crown. He led a paramilitary group of Scots, Native Americans and others called Rogers' Rangers. They were guerilla fighters, trackers who were used to great effect against the Continental Army. I'm not sure what became of Robert Rogers, but I think he left America and emigrated to England.

History is History. Whether someone likes the particular facts of History doesn't change the facts . Would people have the Scotts give up their history or do they think history should be rewritten. Is anybody arguing about whether the movie gets the facts straight ? That would be the only argument that I think could hold water but it's not an argument I hear anyone making.

Why not tell it and let the people decide what they think. We don’t get to pick our history. It is what it is. Shaun thank you for the vlogs. I truly enjoy them. Hi to Teka. Y’all take care. I always thought Cineworld was one of these chains which only had one big cinema in big cities and charge you a fortune for a seat. That's certainly the case in Edinburgh but I'm not sure about the rest of Scotland. We prefer Vue for a multitude of reasons one of which is ticket costs but that would definitely put us off Cineworld even more

If a Movie Theater Chain were to not show a movie here in the US, the most likely causes would either be an alleged previous breach of contract or an inability to negotiate a 'fair' price for both theater and distributor. The acquisition and holdings of money is far more important than personal values of the CEO/COO. I'm surprised the thought did not cross your mind, I guess that'd be a good thing.

As an American whose ancestors aided Robert the Bruce on the Isle of Islay (I believe) when he had to retreat and then sent armies and journeyed with him to the Battle of Bannockburn, I really can't wait to see this movie. It's not just part of Scottish history, it's my very own piece of family history. Knowing how many of my ancestors perished at the hands of clan wars-- even one between father and son and father in law and son-in-law, it's sort of disappointing but not surprising to hear about Scots going against each other. Thx for the news Shaun. Still waiting in America for release. If it's still out in August there, I may have to see it in Scotland when I'm there.

Hey Shaun, Braveheart was a very popular film but was way to inaccurate. The Outlaw King told only a tiny bit of the story. Both films do not do justice. The big story is that Edward managed to get funding from Genoa,to finish off the Irish resistance and brought 10000 troops from France to defeat the Welsh . The Welsh had their own Christian church like the Irish and the Scots. When the Scots were fighting for independance they were fighting for their country and their church against Edward and the Pope. The Welsh language was banned ,their church outlawed. In Ireland the same ,the Celtic church was overtaken by the Norman church. The Welsh claimed that a church had been set up in uk at the same time as St Peter's in Rome. In the Celtic church Abbots and Bishops were appointed by the community, and funds raised were used in the community wheras in the Norman ,Catholic arena the moneys were funneled to the Pope and his factors. This period has amazing tales. I liked the lead in Braveheart as Robert Bruce , but the film convinced many that RB dogged Wallace in. I look forward to seeing this new version.Mike .

I think there's more to this than anyone thought. Because they're not showing it here in my city as well, and I'm mad as hell! This seems shady although I don’t understand current day politics in Scotland. Lots of films bomb at the box office, so that’s not a credible reason ( and I think you said they gave no reason at all). Let the people decide. If this film has a bias then just don’t go see it if it offends you. Simple! More freely expressed viewpoints make us stronger rather than weaker. Poor business decision on their part, and in the long run will probably ensure that MORE people see this film.

We had a similar thing happen in the States when Malcom X was released in the the '90s. A lot of theaters refused to show it. I don't know if it was because it was about Malcom X or because it was a Spike Lee film. I had to wait til my history teacher showed it in class after we read the book.

They've changed and are now showing it at Cineworld. I was very surprised on it originally not being shown when I heard, there's so many movies on Scottish history being released such as Netflix's Outlaw King, you'd think they'd want to cash in on that success.

Your Scottish patriotism, and your anguish about the political situation in Scotland, are moving. From my perspective over here in the States though, it seems there really is no such thing as a Scottish independence movement. Those who want to break away from the UK only want Scotland to be ruled from Brussels. I fully sympathize with your distress over people who seem to want to run Scotland down. We have plenty of those types on this side of the pond. There might be a legitimate discussion to be had over whether Scotland would achieve more in the UK or in the EU, but the so called nationalists are most definitely not seeking an independent and sovereign Scotland.

I’m all for independence and I am looking forward to seeing it but it’s a small budgeted independently made film with very little promotion released during a very busy period for big budgeted and family films. I can see why cineworld passed on it. I wasn’t really expecting cineworld to pick it up anyway. To be honest I’m more shocked my local independent cinema didn’t show it. I was also wanting to see fabric and cineworld wasnt showing that either so it wasn’t like Robert the Bruce was the only film not to get a cineworld release this weekend. I don’t think the decision was anyway political even though some seem to be spinning as such. Angus has mentioned on twitter that its going to be shown at 5 different cinemas including Aberdeen cineworld which does make me question the whole “banning” was a giant publicity stunt. Not that it’s a bad thing though. The “ban” has given it way more publicity than cineworld showing it ever did.

This would be like an American theatre banning a movie about the Revolution. Given the current political environment, if the movie "The Patriot" had been released in America now, or had a rerelease, it might get banned based on Mel Gibson's involvement, controversy over the second Amendment (right to bear arms,) and the depictions of founding fathers considering the statue/monument debate a few years ago. However, I think it would be pretty unlikely outside of some crazy politician like AOC demanding it not be shown in their town or district.
