Roberta Flack ~ Feel Like Makin' Love 1974 Soul Purrfection Version

Roberta Flack's music was an important part of my musical education. Her duet with Donny Hathaway "Where Is The Love" is my favorite song of hers, the second is "Feel Like Makin' Love". "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" had been a massive hit and inescapable in the spring/summer of 1972, then "Killing Me Softly With His Song" became another summer favorite, #1 for five weeks; the woman was on a serious roll. The #1 pop streak continued with "Feel Like Makin' Love" which made its chart debut in June 1974, but not without some controversy.
There had been some trouble during these sessions that saw her producer Joel Dorn quitting the project due to some dissension with Atlantic executives. Then a new, younger producer was enlisted but he did not last very long until he stopped showing up for work. So Roberta decided to finish the album on her own dubbing herself as producer Rubina Flake and spent eight months completing it. There is a thank you on the album from her to her friend Quincy Jones....I wonder if she got some advice from him on the mixing....
The song was written by Kansas City born and Nebraska raised Eugene McDaniels, who had pop hits of his own with "A Hundred Pounds Of Clay", a #3 Hot100 hit in 1961 with "Tower Of Strength" that went to #5 that same year. She heard the song he wrote and knew she could make it her own. Her instincts were dead on as Flack's song hit #1 Pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary. "Feel Like Makin' Love" sounded like a reverie on the radio, it just floated all around me with the energy of the impending arrival of summer.
As we go to spring into summer, this timing of this song is topical since the lyrics of "strolling in the park, watching winter turn to spring" are so evocative of this time of year for me like when I first heard it during spring thaw! I found a lovely string section I don't remember hearing in the original single version and brought them forward. You know how much of a strings fan I am, and they really help to take the song to the next level.
It was nominated for three Grammies; Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
I love Roberta's duet with Donny Hathaway "Back Together Again" from 1979 now a disco funk classic. The rest of the LP it was on had some great music, "God Don't Like Ugly" comes to mind. "Stay With Me" is a hauntingly lovely tribute to Donny, if you haven't heard I highly recommend the album, it's solid and still sounds surprisingly fresh!
This remix I dedicate to my friend, niecy. hang on in there, sistah!

The intro made me full of emotions ,it gave me chills then tears to my eyes . I didn't know what making love was, but it sure made me feel like making love as a young teen. She had a voice like velvet so smooth and jazzy. No one has a voice like her . It took me on a journey so soft and sweet . Closed my eyes and I went back to a gentle breeze the sun in my face and a happy time . Me and all my friends just jamming. I can hear every instrument perfectly . Love this your are The Master of The Best Mixes! Thank you for bringing a smile to my face and some pep in my step. Beautiful MEMORIES of a my innocent youth!

This Roberta Flack gem debuted the month I graduated from high school and it was still an important song on the 1975 playlists of the Montreal-suburban radio station where I worked a summer job engineering shows for a few of the deejays and spinning a show of my own. Minimum wage, maximum joy. 😊 It had great crossover play, as I recall, from Top 40 to pop to soul to adult contemporary, and it was magical no matter the format. There’s not a Roberta Flack song I don’t adore. Many of them are sealed forever to moments in my life and every one sounds fresh today when I seek them out on my own playlists or hear them on satellite radio. As usual, you have respected “Feel Like Makin’ Love” with your unique treatment, letting its original beauty sparkle while adding some marvelous flourishes of you own. Thank you for your passion, and for your labour of love to keep this song, and so many others, shining brightly.

Ah driving from TX to CA in my new 1975 Vega listening to the radio. As one station faded and a new one found... this song would play before that station faded . Sing always evokes moving to San Diego.. Thanks

This entire (self produced) album is amazing. Not a bad song on it. One of my absolute favorite Roberta Flack albums.

Thank You. She did it herself, no help from the label.
@MsTexas73

@@qwj68boots Exactly. Because they were trying to “teach her a lesson” and “make an example” of her, and “put her in her place”. That is why the song “Feels Like Makin Love”, which was nominated for a Record of the Year GRAMMY, did not win. She would have 3-peated. She lost to a song that was subpar in comparison. The album was released too late to be nominated for those GRAMMYS but should have been nominated for the next year and was snubbed. The record company kept wanting her to stay in a particular lane and she wanted to make music SHE wanted to make. As heard on this album, she was ready to turn the page and try something new, as music was changing. We actually got our first taste of it on the Killing Me Softly album. She did most of that herself without the credit.

She’s just got such an emotional voice you just have to listen to this beautiful music. It’s such a great song to slow dance to. It’s the sort of song we need right now to cheer us all up again. Getting back to feeling good about life again . Totally relaxed aghhh ....

This makes me think of the Crow’s Nest in Santa Cruz. It’s always had kind of a snazzy 70s lounge feel for me and I remember it kinda that way when I was a kid.

This is the type of song you can keep adding to when you play it. I could step up the guitar in the parts where it comes in. Electronic keyboards are really really close to strings too. If you don't got an orchestra they'll definitely do.

It was quite a time during the early 70's, and this song was the focus of all types of people. Eloquently and passionately delivered from Roberta. The first time I listened to this song was on a local Rock station. I think back in those days it was called "crossover" appeal. All types of stations played this "million seller" single and album. Lastly I remember reading about Roberta, and I discovered that prior to her being a musical artist, her first calling was as a music instructor. I don't know how long she embarked on that occupation. I can say she brought so much to the musical industry. Finally I can say, in addition her singing and superb piano playing, Roberta played and sang on University ( Concerts ) campuses.
