This was the first time I ever saw Myrtha’s entrance in act 2. I was stunned watching her enter because at first I thought she was floating or being pulled on a rolling cart. Then I realized she was taking tiny tiny fast steps on pointe. The implied speed and strength it took for her to move that fast stunned me again. Incredible.
My tears bursted out when I was watching the last scene. I've watched this ballet for a few times already but never thought that it was so much sorrow drama. Now I realised the deep love Giselle and Albrecht had to each other. Also, now I know why my ballet teachers said "you need to be an actress." Thank you Svetlana and Roberto!!!!
For me as well. Men don't cry as often as women, but I was so drawn into the drama that the tears indeed flowed at the very end. Zakarova and Bolle's portrayals were so convincing, her death totally came to life for me as ironic as my wording might be. The only drawback for me in the whole production was the boring repetition of the ballet company's costumes. Better to subtely vary the costumes than tediously repeat them without end. Admitedly Ms. Zakarova's costume was breathtaking and silky soft, not unlike her vulnerable character.
A year and three lockdowns later, still coming here to escape! Let's hope it's not the same context another year down the line and we can eventually come here to enjoy the ballet more and to escape less.
You must have been there when I was then :)) I went on 4th, Had a few words with Roberto, his sister, mother and father - got a huge kiss on the cheek which made it extra special, but also got Svetlana's autograph which is uber cool :))
BlueRaspberry yeah on the 4th!! wooaah you spoke to him and his family!! do you know him personally? i managed to get their autographs too which was super awesome and yeah really special, never been to a show like that before :)
louisalim This week she has been in my city too, at the San Carlo Theater. I have attended at Giselle. I think Svetlana is the greatest contemporary dancer. A perfect technique but she has also a natural grace and elegancy. The day before the piece she met 200 fan in the foyer of the theater and I was so lucky to be there. I made pictures with her and I could speak with her. She is a beautiful person, so modest. I still can't believe I have met her...
Francesca Scamardella Hi Francesca -- I am aware of Svetlana's visit to San Carlo - and the interviews in the foyer - I have three or four friends who were also there - :)) and have some fabulous pictures which I am sure you do too. She looked more relaxed than I have ever seen her - a softer Svetlana somehow :) I am glad you got to meet her. She and I spoke a little at La Scala a week or two ago.
Thank you for your answer BlueRaspberry. The meeting has been fabolous. I expected to know a star while Svetlana was absolutely modest and open. I ask her a picture and she answered me: "yes, please". So I was wondering: "What???? Has she said "please" to me?"! And her speech about her experience with dance, suggestions she has given to all the small dancer in the foyer have been an extraordinary experience. I will be back to San Carlo in August. She will be there for the Festival Opera interpreting Giselle, once again.
I LOVE GISELLE.......................... after so many times seeing it live in North America, Europe and the UK....... it yet remains my favourite, my most beloved ballet of all time. AND THAT WILL NEVER CHANGE. Can't quite get over the fact that this amazing BOLLE/ZAKHAROVA production from LA SCALA is from 15 years ago. Stirring in every way, it brings a tear to my eye especially as the heartache of the story touches us more than ever in the COVID age of 2020.
Thank you BlueRusberry for this great joy. I love "Giselle" more then any other ballet. This with Roberto Bolle and Svetlana Zakharova was like a dream. A wonderful, breathtaking dream. They were PERFECT!
mariana alexandru I have seen them dance it in reality, it is every inch the same - they are completely natural in their elegance on and off stage, both gracious, approachable, and Svetlana showed a totally unexpected side to her when she cuddled a young three or four year old - gone was the cold somewhat distant dancer,, replaced by a smiling, warm and caring woman, really it was a joy to see, she wont be able to fool me again that she is the distant withdrawn woman she portrays :)
+BlueRaspberry I'm delighted to read your thoughts and impressions about this charming ballerina. Svetlana really looks like a diva, a star, a distant creature who can't be touched by our common, human reality. But in fact, she is a woman, a mother and a wife. I rarely see her smiling or showing any kind of affection out of the stage. You are so lucky!
I come back to this every once in a while and my mind is absolutely blown every time. I used to dance and got on pointe during that time, and I remember my teacher always saying to always applaud and have respect for dancers that can pull off this move that Svetlana did at 38:39 because it's one of the most difficult moves to do on pointe. I've read that Giselle's choreography is also one of the most challenging pieces to do. This is absolutely some of Svetlana's best work.
Giselle has been my favorite ballet ever since I saw it at age 9. 50 years on, and having seen many versions on stage and on screen, This....is by far my FAVORITE! Just so blissfully and ethearally beautiful. Brings tears to my eyes. I watched it with my 88 year old mother ( who first introduced me to the story of Giselle) just the other week and she was enthalled...and thought Roberto was " a good sort " I could never get tired of this. Svetlana is the epitome of Ballerina. She just floats through the air, she's superb! 🌷

Скольраз смотрела и все равно слезы на глазах :какая музыка, как хороша Захарова, драматургия, оркестр, кордебалет, хочется ещё и ещё раз смотреть, не отрываясь! Браво!!!
Балетная постановка на самом высоком уровне... Оркестр, солисты, кардебалет, декорации, божественная музыка Адана... Особенно красив и изыскан Роберт, он лучший танцор этого поколения в 🌿 Европе. Под стать ему Светлана, трогает до слез❤😢❤
Oui, vous avez raison. Ils sont magnifiques mais Zakharova est une madame, pas mademoiselle. Elle as une petite fille qui s'appelle Anna. Et son mari est un violoniste célèbre.
Sachez qu'en bon français on dit Mademoiselle en lieu et place de Madame par galanterie pour ne pas faire référence à l' âge d'une femme ! De plus c'est très insultant pour des français d'appeler Mademoiselle Sakharova par son seul nom comme vous le faites.
Красивая пара, прекрасные природные данные...но...Роберто - лучше смотрится в современной хореографии , не хватает длинных пропорций для классических балетов , а Светлана - не обладает драматической выразительностью...

questa edizione è stupenda e per me più emozionante di quella con la Fracci dell'american ballet. Carla Fracci è semplicemente divina ma nell'insieme mi ha emozionato di più questa edizione. Bolle poi è splendido
La rappresentazione più e più eccelsa di Giselle. Due, tra i più grandi ed espressivi e tecnicamente perfetti, INTERPRETI. GRANDIOSO PLAUSO‼️ECCELLENTISSIMI‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
Spettacolo veramente meraviglioso : la realizzazione di un capolavoro che è essa stessa un capolavoro . Abbiamo dunque , kantianamente, un capolavoro trascendentale. La bellissima musica di Adam è perfetta per due ballerini che tolgono il fiato per l'eleganza, lo stile, la leggerezza e la grande interpretazione. Anche la storia , che è la base del balletto, come la musica, è commovente, tanto che non si può osservare l'opera (usando i versi danteschi) "tanto gentile e tanto onesta" , senza commuoversi. Il sostantivo che più mi viene alla mente è: purezza, purezza di stile, di sentimenti, di leggerezza, di moralità sublime, fantasia e creatività. Sono veramente incantato e commosso , per un capolavoro che onora la Scala.
Ottima la regia ideativa del collettivo danzante con posture anche inedite ed estremamente accattivanti .Ottima l'enfatizzazione e l'attorialita' dimostrata dai protagonisti e sensazione di fluente levità fatta tensione motile ed elanista da parte della ballerina in dolce fibrillazione dei passi sulle punte in eundo veloce.Grande impressione di facilità esecutiva d'acchito da parte di tutti gli agenti in proscenio.Oltremodo bravi.Bighin GIULIO RENZO
El ballet Giselle de por sí es uno de los más lindos del repertorio clásico. Su música maravillosa, el argumento y la combinación del primer acto tan intenso y colorido con el segundo acto tan etéreo y delicado es mágico. La bailarina es muy buena y de primera pues tiene magnífica técnica y riqueza de interpretación del personaje.Roberto Bolle no solo un magnífico y virtuoso bailarín que es brillante por su técnica y actitud sino además un gran "partenaire" y eso ya es otro tema. Algunos bailarines son magníficos y pedimos partenaires...y viceversa.
Mademoiselle Sakharova a inventé la danse classique elle est divine. Roberto Bolle est princier. Très très belle et exigeante interprétation. Bravo ❤❤❤

Watching this magical Giselle performance 179 years after it was first performed in Paris is such a surreal experience. I hope I can watch a live Giselle as beautiful as this in the future.

I think this company really nailed the drama of Act II. Their emotional quality was spot on. Marta Romagna as Queen of the Wilis, WOW, such poise and commitment to the role of the ruler of the women apparitions! The way she summoned the ghosts of fallen women was spectacular, such gravity in her task. The energy between her and the corps, especially during Albrecht's final judgment of being danced to death, was incredible-- the corps responds with sharp precision and Marta truly displayed the power and authority of a queen in these scenes. The interpretation of the dancers and also of the dramaturgy was, I thought, absolutely brilliant!!! It makes so much sense-- of COURSE Albrecht must receive the same punishment as Hilarion. He is just as responsible for the death of Giselle as Hilarion, even the love of Giselle cannot absolve him of his wrongdoing. And so what saves him in the end, after their (spectacular) efforts to gain pardon fail? The effort of Giselle to keep him conscious until the sun rises. WOW. This dramatic moment is incredible and perfectly told in this interpretation of the story. Bravo everyone!
The filming is superb - it captures the dancing beautifully while never attempting to obscure that this is a theatrical production performed on a stage. I have seen many films of Giselle that introduce spurious shots of woodland ponds and magically disappearing ballerinas; for me, such interjections only break the magical spell of a well-staged Giselle. Bravo to the film crew! The corps work in Act II was mesmerizing - I have seldom seen the Willis danced with such flawless precision. Yet far from being merely a technical feat, the corps captured the chilling cold of these vengeful spirits while overlaying them with a nuanced eroticism that created a heightened sense of dread. Romagna's superb performance as Myrta is perhaps the best psychological portrayal of this role I have seen. And what can be said of Bolle and Zakharova? Impeccable technique, to be sure, but their partnering seems to be driven by such a unified artistic vision and musical impulse that they become an expression of a singular pathos. And Zakharova's phrasing - miraculous. I wondered how she would capture the essence of this Romantic Era ballet - beautifully, but with a contemporary sensibility and not a drop of sappy sentimentalism. Zakharova did more than justice to the stage at La Scalla, home of another legendary Gisselle of a generation ago, Carla Fracci.
I love the partnership, and everytime I watch this, it brings me to tears, they are simply superb. Svetlana is a Russian through and through and uses every inch of her body, (watch those arms!). Both of them long limbed and heartbreakingly elegant, between them its magic. I am hard pressed to ever fault Roberto - although I realise that nothing is perfect he seldom puts a foot, arm, hair, eyelash wrong lol. I am glad you noticed the Corps -- my personal opinion is that they were then and they are now one of the most precise corps in the world, I love to watch them. -
Kevin I couldn't agree with you more. So true about the logical and eloquent staging, and the chilling yet erotic quality of the Willis in Act II! Also, I can't get enough of Zakharova's phrasing?!
Everything in this representation is beautiful, Svetlana is Giselle ! I have just a very small critique to make : the romantic tutus of the Corps de Ballet are a little too long, on certain dancers it almost touch the floor, 5 centimeters less would have been perfect.

I didn't realize it till the mad scene but she must be the tallest Giselle I've ever seen but she really sells the vulnerability (kind of the opposite of Makarova, who danced so big you didn't realize what a tiny little Swan Queen she was). Wikipedia puts her height on par with Lopatkina's at 5'9". I love the filming and the reaction shot when she first sees the sword!
I'm actually here because I saw this ballet in an episode of Sailor Moon, and I have to say I was not disappointed. I loved everything about it. The story sort of reminded me of Hans Christian Anderson's story, The Little Mermaid.
