Racoons are major bird, nestling and egg predators. Even raptors aren't immune from Racoons raiding their nest. I've heard of stories that Great Horned Owls are known for killing Racoons that were attempting to raid their nest. What I also find interesting, is that Fisher's(M. Pennanti), are said to indirectly help bird populations by preying on egg eating and nestling predators such as Racoons, Opossums, Skunks, Squirrels, Martens, & Foxes.

It's a lot rougher out there for birds than I realized.

I know its life and predators also need to survive But this whole family went out just like that.Its so scary to think one moment you could just be alive and well and the next you're racoon food

There's lots of anger at raccoons being stated here, strongly or subtly, but if this didn't happen commonly, it's a mathematical certainty that we'd have wall-to-wall robins in just a few years. Robins (and many other birds) are quite literally made to be eaten by other animals, and that's why their populations remain high in spite of events like happening all around us (but usually unseen by us).

Family reunited in the belly, all is not lost.

There was a nest of mourning doves under my balcony, in the corner. I remember that day 3 years ago, in the middle of the night I heard the mother dove cooing loudly and a lot of shuffling under the balcony. I thought I scared away maybe a squirrel because when I turned the lights on, above the balcony, there was silence. Later in the morning, I went to go check on them and I see 3 of the dove chicks(none survived) carcasses on the floor. Didn't see the adult ones around. man... I still regret not going outside that day and protecting them. Still not too sure whether it was a squirrel, raccoon, or maybe a wild cat that ate them because there are a few of those around my area. To see those bones of the chicks on the floor like that. man. But that's nature, circle of life. still though
