As a guy who practices with a bow constantly and loves going fast, I really owe it to the people who made this movie, including Lars Anderson; 'cause it introduced me to using the right side of the bow with the Slavic draw and extra arrows in my draw hand---and I've been shooting that way (with arrow holes touching!) ever since.

What do u mean, im into traditional longbow Archery too, maybe i could pick up a thing or two
@DerekBartlettBeorn
@DerekBartlettBeorn 4 года назад
Pretty easy to learn; just gotta look between the limb and the string when aiming. Use the middle finger at the corner of the mouth as your anchor point. If you loosen/relax your grip, the bow will shift/turn a little to the left as you draw the arrow back. So when you let go (open all your fingers, including your forefinger that’s been holding the arrow against the bow) it won’t swerve off so much to the right. As for holding extra arrows, the way I’ve been able to do it easier is by using the first digits on my index and middle fingers for a pinch grip, holding the nocks down with my thumb so I don’t drop them. Do it like that, then once you loose one arrow you just gotta give the next one a little swing to set it in place. Yeah it’s an adjustment but not as hard to pick up as it might seem.

One thing I really like is how with the strength training, they’re using chains as weight, a lot of people don’t think that chains are good for strength building because they can twist and pinch the skin so it’s hard to use them. But if you find the right way to use them and you use multiple at a time, you get a helluva lot more from it than regular weights or deadweight. When he was pulling the chains he was working multiple muscles at one time, his arms to hold the chains from choking him, his pecs from flexing his arms in that manner, his stomach to make sure he keeps a good form to not injure his back, and his legs from the deadweight he’s dragging.

The funny part is, the style of shooting he is using is a real style. The standing shooting with a quiver and drawing the arrow along the left side was only used in formations. However experienced archers, especially Mongolian horse archers fired from the other side. Furthermore, archers who moved allot never used quivers. An archer named Lars Andersen actually uses this EXACT style, he also holds the world record in speed shooting. It's crazy how similar the style this character is using to his RL style xD. Edit: Not really sure why so many of you are getting so angry. The best I can figure it is traditionalists being elitist. I doubt this will change your mind or give you peace, but here is a video that may grant you an insight of the consistency of Lars Anderson's style. _"Doing the IMPOSSIBLE in MEDIEVAL ARCHERY, with Lars Andersen: longbow / warbow"_ by Shadiversity.

One of the most rad scenes from a wicked film that actors Targon Egerton and Jammie Foxx really outdid themselves in and captured the true essence of Robin Hood and the historical Medieval Ages setting surrounding the lore of Robin Hood and the passion of what's it's like to embody his life of adventure, fun, drama and action and being an absolute cool lad while firing arrows from rooftops. It's the self introspection that I like the most and the engagement and enjoyment of living through the world of this said person so much that enter a sort of flow state and only focus on his world and almost nothing else. I will consider this to be one of the greatest gems ever made and definitely looking forward to see if the lore could be expanded on it somewhere in the near future.

1:09 and so on till he splits the board; you can see how there's a bit of torque and string twist in his draw hand. That's good, cause doing that keeps the arrow from falling off. I've done that too a bunch of times for testing---along with a bunch of other archers ("Shadiversity", Armin Hirmer, etc.)---and yeah that works. Just takes a bit of adjustment when it comes to aiming and the slightly different way that your muscles are working. But yeah that's pretty easy after a few tries and the shoulder expansion is even smoother. I've drawn back to the ear using the 3 finger grip on the right side and got some tight groupings with it. Definitely give it a try! :D

Talking about historical accuracy of clothes in a Robin hood movie is like looking for historical accuracy in a movie with King Arthur and Merlin. There were fictional stories made to inspire the people of the times it was told. There were pretty much the superheroes of the times.

This is pretty much what I do in the basement all the time now, with MY "street weapon", shooting LARP arrows at boxes, bottles, etc. Last week one of them bounced all the way back to me and next thing I knew it was in my hand. I could barely see it, it was just there and moving so fast, I was like "Whoa...! :D " (I love how they show John knocking Robin's "too slow!" arrows outta the way, especially after seeing the behind-the-scenes stuff with Lars doing the same thing for testing---some of those rubber-headed arrows breaking in the process).

When he first put the arrow on the right side, the arrow looked funny. A real arrow would have bounced around a little bit but the scene made the arrow fall into place exactly with no bouncing. And some of the draw scenes look off too so I'm sure they sped up some of the scenes for a more dramatic effect. Entertaining nonetheless but not accurate at all.

Finally a movie that shows how archers used to shoot. All these modern shooters bows' are set up wrong. Holding it with the left hand, yet putting the arrow on the left side which wastes time...
@DerekBartlettBeorn
@DerekBartlettBeorn 4 года назад
yeah it takes a bunch of extra movements which is one reason I haven't used the Mediterranean draw for a while (when I do, I grab it just above the fletching, or by the nock, and thread it through). The weave method is good though it can be tricky to not jab yourself or the bow. These days I favor the Slavic draw that's used in this movie, except with two fingers under the arrow for a cleaner shot than with three.
@joelibrary7359
@joelibrary7359 4 года назад
They are not set up wrong. They are designed for static target shooting. If you rest the arrow on the right side of the bow, you need to draw the bow using your thumb so the arrow doesnt fall off. This is practical if you are on a horse or on the move while shooting but does not have any benefits in target archery.
@darkscorpion6534
@darkscorpion6534 4 года назад
@@joelibrary7359 you can call it what you want, and act like modern rules are the correct way. But the way modern shooters do it wastes time from a combat perspective. The olden day archers were insanely fast and accurate with their shots. It most likely took way more skill to learn to shoot that way.
@delcat8168
@delcat8168 4 года назад
@@darkscorpion6534 You obviously know nothing about medieval archery. A reasonable rate of shooting would be about 10-12 arrows a minute. No point shooting faster if you only have 20 arrows! (I make bows, 150 pounds Yew warbow is the heaviest I've made. I've shot a 100 pound Elm bow and sent an arrow 341 yards from a wooden bow)
@darkscorpion6534
@darkscorpion6534 4 года назад
@@delcat8168 Dude, your point is valid, but I wasnt really referring to medieval archers. (Badasses in their own right) but I'm referring more to the faster shooters such as the mongol horse archers etc. (I dont know the names of many different types of archers), and other ancient archers from different dynasties who lived centuries before the medieval times.
