This is my first origami instruction video, so go easy on me. This model shows an unusual use for a fish base. I have created quite a few decorative models recently, but I wanted to do something more 3 dimensional and came up with this.
7 sided origami is rare, but this one works out so neatly.

This was so fun to make! Some parts were a bit tricky, but I was able to figure them out after rewatching the video.

Interesting, I am teaching a class for our seniors in my apartment building and I am teaching the fish base. I was excited to see this use of the fish base. Thank you. You did very well.

I love modular origami and think you have invented an instant classic here. I enjoyed making it and like the way it can be dynamically moved between 2D and 3D states.

it's amazing how many times I find myself asking Origamist on RU-vid this question, what size paper are you using?
@robinglynnorigami7274
@robinglynnorigami7274 5 лет назад
Hello Richard, thank you for the question. The paper I used in the video was from a memo block and the squares had sides of 9cm. Any size of paper is fine for this model, I have even used the full width of wallpaper to make an extra large version. This was my first ever RU-vid video. In more recent videos, I provide commentary and make a point of mentioning the paper size. This is as a result of feedback such as yours, so thanks again.

top tip to anyone trying this: don't use paper of all the same colour when making this for the first time; it gets confusing quickly, to say the least...

From about 3:20-3:40 the fingers are a little bit too much in the foreground so that it is not easy to see how you have to fold. Sometimes I found it a little bit difficult to put it together but at last I got a nice little wheel. :-)

I can see your point. I know that when I am teaching a model, some people struggle to understand reverse folds. You can see what I am doing, but it could be a bit clearer. I will try harder in future videos.

Another point, is that this early video was in my "silent movie" days. In all my recent videos, I talk about what I am doing. Hate the sound of my own voice though!

Hermosa figura. Pero de todas las que he trabajado es la primera vez que me estreso tanto. Increíble que no pueda hablar para que el proceso sea más práctico. El audio hace falta

This was one of my first videos and I was still getting used to making tutorials. All my recent videos have spoken instructions. Maybe one day, I will re-make this video. Hope you managed to make it in the end.

What paper do you use
@robinglynnorigami7274
@robinglynnorigami7274 6 лет назад
I used sheets from a memo block. It has no brand, but I think I bought it in a UK shop called "The Works". Memo blocks are a good source of cheap single sided paper, but be warned, sometimes they are not perfect squares and you have to compensate when folding. The ones in the video are nice and square.

It's a pretty cool you made its seems hard but how many times have you tried this one

What kind of paper do you use? I tried it with my paper, but the creases were too crisp and the paper didn't "pop" into 3D
@robinglynnorigami7274
@robinglynnorigami7274 2 года назад
Any kind of paper should work. It may be that a couple of layers have locked together and the pop needs a bit of encouragement. What size and type of paper did you use?

@@robinglynnorigami7274 3in by 3in Origami Paper by Daiso. Maybe I'll try larger paper then?
@robinglynnorigami7274
@robinglynnorigami7274 2 года назад
@@mathwithmisha1928 Just made one with 3 inch paper and it worked fine. One thing I did notice is that it is possible to assemble with the layers not all connected the same way. This may well stop the model from popping into shape. Examine how I join the units and make sure that yours are done the same way.

I got confused at 3:22
@robinglynnorigami7274
@robinglynnorigami7274 4 года назад
That move is called an inside reverse fold. It can be confusing to people who are new to origami. Fortunately there is plenty of help out there, and a quick RU-vid search for "origami inside reverse fold" should get you sorted. Hope you try again.

Not clear at all. No words explaining anything. I cannot get the triangle flaps the right shape because your fingers block the sight of whatever you're doing and you don't explain anything of what your doing. 😞 I have been making and folding origami since 2009 and I can't even figure out after watching 50 times what the heck you did. Remake the video with explanation so it's easier please

This was my first ever video, so I agree it is not very good. I want to help, but I am not sure what stage you are having trouble with. If you let me know what time in the video, I will see if I can help.One other suggestion - there are diagrams for this model on my website, which is shown on the closing credit.

Hi Robin, you can stop at critical points and simply show your model for a second. That just helps all of us getting on the same page.
