He was a comic genius who had only one speed - full throttle. From the moment he burst into our lives as an alien on Happy Days, he amazed us with a range of talent that left us breathless. Yet, behind the manic shtick of Robin Williams was a man who was deeply plagued by depression. He had other demons, such as alcohol and cocaine. Still he kept us entertained to the very end, which made it all the more unfathomable to his legion of fans and admirers when he took his life, at the age of 63.

He was a close second to Princess Diana for me. See, I'm one year younger than Diana and my only child, a son, is the same age as Prince Harry, so I identified with them in a way that I couldn't have identified with Robin, no matter how much I loved his work.

He was definitely a genius, but that phrase doesn’t really apply in this case. Robin wasn’t depressed from the “madness” that comes with being a genius. It was the alcohol and the cocaine.

To this day Williams is the only celebrity whose passing had me actually grieving. I remember coming home from work about two days after his death, and after backing into the driveway and hearing more about him on the radio, I switched off the engine and broke down behind the wheel. It was dark out and I remember seeing the street lights as streaks in my vision because of the tears smothering my face. It felt like I had lost a friend I never met. No celebrity has come that close before or since. Under the right circumstances and videos, even after 6 years, I can still get choked.

1 thing that helps me is I had a heart attack I was dead for 2 and a half minutes & saw my best friends brother, Luke who was my 2nd best friend in heaven. He killed himself when he was 17 (I was 18). The pastor of our church said Luke would be in hell but my mom said no! He'll be in heaven because God knows your heart. I'm so glad to have seen him there. & am sure Robin will be too.

Unfortunately Robin's disease (Lewy Body Dementia) wasn't due to a lack of happiness or cheer--his brain was literally degenerating due to a pernicious type of dementia that causes both Parkinson's & Alzheimer's symptoms with schizophrenic overtones. It's 100% progressive & fatal with no cure. It's like three of the worst diseases all in one, and he didn't know what was wrong with him: just that he was going "crazy". I would've done the same in his position tbh.

What most people would do is they write the script like they would with any script and they would add the words Robin goes off here meaning that there are areas in the script where Robin can improvise. That technique has been done in Mork and Mindy.

As a child I couldn't speak thus twice a week went to one-on-one speech therapy training. After the first year of learning the basics I graduated to the next level. Every week for the next two years my teacher gave me a new Robin Williams' stand-up comedy routines to practice in front of a mirror. Every week this man became a greater part of my soul. The day he died was like losing a father to a son he never knew he had. I Love this Man and only wish some how this simpleton had a way to let him know what he truly means to me. Yesterday was August 11th, 2019. Five years. It's been five years and the fact that he's gone, and that he took his own life, still hurts immensely. While he's best remembered for his more zany, comedic parts, for me, Robin's role of Mr. Keating from "Dead Poets Society" will always be my favorite. I first saw the film in my 10th grade English class. I was already a bookworm and had dreamed of becoming a writer since I was six, and as the movie unfolded to show what an impact the written word and people who are passionate about it can have, I felt confirmed in my heart, "Yep. I want to do THAT with my life." And thankfully, I had several English teachers just like Mr. Keating throughout my grade school career to encourage me and I went on to double major in Creative Writing and Theatre in college. As of 2019, I graduated five years ago, I've written a play adaptation of Victor Hugo's "The Man Who Laughs" I'm trying to get produced, and I'm working on a sci-fi novel series with a friend of mine set in 1920s France that deals with alchemy and all its mystical aspects. To this day, that first viewing of "Dead Poets Society" is still a milestone in my memory, and Robin's wonderful performance will move me no matter how many times I watch it. O captain, my captain, you will be forever loved and missed. Wherever your soul is now, I hope it's at peace. Blessed be. )O(

In a way, I think it's a good thing. Think of that category as motivation to prove them wrong and exceed your high school peers. Mr. Williams did so with flying colors, he had achieved heights they could only dream about. I think that the "most likely not to succeed" category could be a good thing if you use that as motivation to prove them wrong. It can give you the drive to work harder and become a great sucess.

Was truly sad when he passed. For one, it was on my birth date, the 11th of August. Second, I met him a long time ago back in '06 when I lived and went to school in SF and he couldn't have been nicer. Got off at my MUNI stop in the Inner Sunset neighborhood, walked towards Arizmendi Bakery to pick up a loaf of bread, and boom...he was standing in line right in front of me. Couldn't help myself, so I quietly said hi and that I admired his work to which he smiled and said thank you and switched his voice and asked me in a comedic way, what was a nice kid like me doing in a place like this? Robin Williams was busting my chops in the middle of a bakery and I was loving every second of it.

Anyone else have those select few movies that they watch when they're home sick? Somehow, despite how crappy you feel, those few movies give you something that make you feel just a tiny bit better...? For me, there are a few movies, & the only one on that short list that doesn't have Robin in it is The Princess Bride. The rest are Robin Williams's classics & I'll be forever grateful for the work that man gave us even though he was internally struggling in his own life. He has given me a lifetime of smiles & laughs & god love his soul.

I remember bawling my eyes out when I saw the newscast that he died. I was on the phone with my father, and when it came out, I started crying. My father became alarmed, and asked what was wrong. When I told him what happened, he was silent because Robin Williams was a family favorite for all of us.

I found his zany roles to be a bit over the top but his dramatic acting was out standing. It’s interesting that many fine comics battle depression.
@StaticImage
@StaticImage 6 лет назад
People with depression make the best comics because they see the absurdity in everyday life that others may not, and instead of just letting it pass them by, they want to laugh at it. It's a method of coping with things that are out of your power and too much to take on alone.

Thank you for including his diagnosis. I've seen other reports on the comedian, and the dementia wasn't mentioned. Mr Williams will be missed, always

It's strange that when he died, the news mentioned the Lewy Body Dementia but I don't remember anyone actually talking about what it was. I wish they had. About the same time, although I wouldn't find out until later, my dad was diagnose with LBD. Now I can't really say any degenerative disease is a "good way to go" but LBD is particularly awful and what happened to my dad is apparently how it always ends. For someone starting to feel the effects of that disease, knowing what's coming and there's absolutely nothing they can do to slow it down, suicide doesn't seem that unreasonable. I had to be so negative, but it was horrible.

There are some things worse then death. And for such a man as Robin to have his legacy destroyed by this nasty disease is a tragedy. It’s never okay to commit suicide, until it is. I can’t even begin to know what I would do. 😢

I heard somewhere that, due to the dementia, he noticed that he started to forget how to be funny. Considering that this was a man whose life was completely centred around his ability to make people laugh, this couldn't have been anything but a horrific nightmare while knowing that it would only get worse.

Ahhh, the saddest and most accurate insight you have voiced about Robin....To his Narcissistic Mother ( who socialised & was very absent from her only child) & a Father who shunned & had very little connection or time for his Son, he yearned for acceptance and unconditional love all his life. His love for his Mother was gained, only by finding a way to cut through her depression by making her laugh. His 'nanny' , a paid member of his upbringing, was the only person, who showed him unconditional love, whilst a child. He gave all he could to live his Life, as a giver of kindness & artists & the funny observer, who recognised both the light & darkness of being. I mourn his early death. He had a steely strength, & was a grateful humble Man, who gave his insight & sense of the obsurdity of life as a gift. I mourn his early death.,...yet understand, he felt the need to go out....on his terms.
