When the life of a law-abiding engineer (Robin Williams) goes terribly wrong, he begins to challenge authority and urge others to do so as well. As a result, he kidnaps Benson and gives Stabler a choice to torture her or let her die...
Season 9, Episode 17 'Authority': When restaurant manager Dwight Lomax (guest star Scott Adsit, "30 Rock") is caught molesting a female employee, he claims that he was following orders from a "Detective Milgram" over the phone. As detectives Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) delve into the case, they discover "Detective Milgram" was a hoax by engineer Merritt Rook (guest star Robin Williams). Rook later turns his trial into a media circus by using the courtroom as a soapbox. Rook’s courtroom antics set him free, and with a group of followers, detectives Benson and Stabler fall prey to another one of Rook’s psychological schemes leaving the SVU department vulnerable.

Whereas the Joker always endeavored to bring the worst out of people just to prove we're all monsters on the inside, Rook is trying to find the one genuine white knight amidst all the monsters. And he's not wrong about Benson and Stabler. Stabler says "I don't abuse my authority" but he has outright broken the law to get a criminal on more than one occassion. He's beaten suspects, and they've not always been guilty. He's used intimidation. The dude is a bad cop. Benson's not much better.

Everyone says that till a tragedy happens to them and nothing happens to the perp. Then you realize no one’s going to help you but yourself. Edgy I know, but it’s society. Thugs can harm you, but you can’t touch them. Then the dice rolls and hope you get some kind of “justice”.

Robin Williams. The happiest clowns are the saddest people. This does a part into the deep dive of the psychology of someone who is truely depressed. You can tell in his affect, his face and his acting that he had known pain.

I never understood why writers would give us every opportunity to marvel at how smart and well planned Robin Williams’s character was, yet greatly imply, that he didn’t just simply do the smartest thing, and double back in the bushes-- but instead, he’s implied by Stabler and Benson’s finally expressions, that he opted for jumping in the water…
