One of my most fond memories as a kid was seeing Robocop. A man who was brutally murdered and brought back as a cyborg to serve a deep dish of well written, revenge. I cant imagine wearing the robocop suit for days of filming, but would love to OWN one. They definitely don't make movies like this anymore, thank god CG wasnt around yet!

I moved to Dallas, where RoboCop was filmed, in '90. Not having much money, I often spent part of my days off my first year wandering around downtown Dallas. I kept running in to scenes, or places that seemed vaguely familiar. I didn't know why, as I had never visited Dallas before moving there. A few years later I figured it out while watching RoboCop on VHS. Now RoboCop is sort of a memory lane for me.

I love those old school practical effects. Yes, I understand CG can look good, and for some characters it's necessary. That said, it gets used to many times when it isn't needed. There is something awesome about well done practical. Not to mention it's far more cost effective.

@@mikerude5073 There is no yes or no to that questions. When its smaller stuff and you know before filming exactly how it should look like in the end, oldschool most probable will be cheaper. Big advantage of CGI is, that you can change after many things like lightning or look. Good example are the marvel movies. Sometimes they replaced the whole uniforms afterwards. Or in thor love and thunder the first scenes with the god. There is a nice video, where they showed how much they changed. If you want to do it old school, you need all the expensive hollywood stars to repeat all the scenes. So CGI is often cheaper but always more flexible.

I can't mention from the top of my head another movie (at least not sci/fi) that used gore so surgically to explore aspects of human cruelness and how heroes and villains alike could make use of it to attain justice/injustice. Verhoeven is and was the only one who COULD make Robocop work, the following movies, including the 2014 one proves that beyond a doubt. Love his movies, love his humour. For some reason, in my city this movie ran only a single week in the movies and I never got to see it there, also, the first video released was heavily, and I mean HEAVILY censored.

It was a perfect social satire for its day, but Robocop is ultimately a horror story that explores the terrifying concept of what it would be like to be Frankenstein’s Monster. Many of the fans of Mary Shelley’s novel, who loved the book, are still left to ponder, what about that human brain? Adam, in the novel, emerges as a blank slate and we see him learn about humanity and how to be in the world from the point of view of a virtual baby. But one is forced to ask, what baggage and memories would that brain still have? And how horrible it would be to waken inside a monster and discover that was you? That’s what Robocop achieves. And then we get the subsequent battle between the personality and the programming. A man living the horror of being stuck inside a machine, having lost his penis and all that makes him a man. That’s appalling.
@JulianaBlewett
@JulianaBlewett Год назад
Adam? You mean Alex? Alex Murphy.
@butwait
@butwait Год назад
But that was never what it was meant to represent. It was always symbolic of the death and resurrection of Jesus. he gets killed, is then resurrected to do good among us, in the end, he even symbolically walks on water, Verhoeven even mentions it partly in the interview.

Ur deeping it way too much. Plus by the end of the film he’s very comfortable and happy as “Murphy”. So?
@ashroskell
@ashroskell Год назад
@@JulianaBlewett : Adam is the name Victor Frankenstein gives to his creation, the, “monster.”
@ashroskell
@ashroskell Год назад
@@butwait : Yes, he’s using Messianic symbolism and story beats to tell a Jesus story. But the Jesus story is not the theme, it’s just the metaphor and the plot device that says Murphy was a fundamentally good man and, therefore, the exception for his time and place. He transcends his ill fortune, the evil machinations of the villains (who seem to be almost everyone) and even his programming, due to his fierce devotion to duty. But we mustn’t confuse story with the themes. The style is satire, so it’s very easy to forget how the movie was ruthlessly skewering its targets; Reaganomics, Trickle-Down Economics, deregulation and privatisation of things that were always thought of as sacred cows, even to the most capitalist society. Privatisation of the cops is the last bastion to fall, as depicted in the movie. If cops aren’t turning a profit, they can be killed. So the theme expands on this satire of the heartlessness and ruthlessness of those times, by taking them to their logical conclusion. Murphy’s corpse is now, “OCP property. We can do whatever the hell we like with him. Lose the arm.” Are you not horrified by that? The idea that your body could be shut down if you piss off the wrong people; that’s horrific. The Murphy theme music is a march, which is timed to match him at full sprint. Not very fast, is it? Verhoven has also discussed this horror aspect at length. He says that an efficient robot police officer would be nimble, sleek, with catlike agility and insect like reflexes. But, to make the point, Murphy trudges and lumbers inside a shiny coffin, starring out as his programming carries out actions of extreme violence to which he is all but a passive viewer. He comes from the same aesthetic mentality that came up with the ED209, like a human tank. Except, he barely even gets to drive it, let alone control it. Yes, he overcomes that by the end, clearing their narcotics, some of their programming and a lot of their bullshit out of his system, to regain something of his humanity and, epically, his identity. But I seriously doubt any human would wish to be denatured in such a way, who is not already mentally ill. Do you contemplate ending up like Murphy (even without all the torture, painlessly going into an operating theatre) with anything but horror?
