So I think that Robocop's one of the greatest movies of all time. Everything about this film works well and it balances brilliant satirical comedy alongside its tragic story of a man made into a machine. Throughout this video we're gonna be going through the entire film scene by scene to talk about all the cool little details in it and also some of the things that you might have missed whilst watching it.
There's so much to love about the movie but originally this wasn't an easy sell. That was primarily due to the films name which was seen as being extremely stupid. American directors were turning it down left and right and thus the script was sent further afield to Paul Verhoven.
Initially he hated it too and the story goes that he read a couple of pages of the scripts, thought it was ridiculous and then threw it away.
However his wife picked it up and read through the entire thing and she managed to convince him that there was a great comedic undertone to the entire thing that she thought he'd be perfect for.
And so it begain with Verhoven jumping onboard the project to make it what's arguably his masterpiece.

It's weird sometimes what director's think. I never drew the analogy of Robocop shooting the baby by hitting the baby food. I just thought, he had a food source with him and it was just the right shape for targeting.

One aspect no one ever seems to bring up is Robocop's voice change. When he is first being calibrated and sent out, his voice is more machine. By the end, he sounds human.

His voice also lowers in volume and isn't all commanding and loud. It's got some compassion trying to shine through and Peter Weller does an incredible job showing a human who has lost his humanity but still has an identity.

In the fight with ED-209, Robo’s visor is damaged, and it’s the first time we see Murphy’s eyes since his rebirth. It’s such a small moment, but seeing his iris dart around, and picking up on his sense of fear, is such a humanising moment.

They turned Murphy's mind into a video screen and Robocop could only see the world in that way. When Murphy woke up and escaped, his human eye looked on the world without a video screen for the first time since he became a prisoner in a cage.

Robocop had one tiny flaw, remember the little quirk in the soundtrack in the finale scene vs Boddicker ? Lol it just slows down for second, don't think they ever fixed it altho I don't have this on blu ray....yet lol. Love this film.

There are minor flaws. The recording of Boddicker Robocop rewatches on his walk to Jones' office does not match what we saw Robocop recording back in the drug lab.

@Mak10z Terminator is great but the animation of certain scenes and make up effects aged very badly very very quickly ... Lawnmower Man had the same problem, like they're between developments in special effects and didn't quite hold together, nit that I dislike the movie I just think it's a shame., but the sequels we get subjected to now I'd happily have a complete reboot of the series ... and another stab at robocop wouldn't be awful either but without avoiding the more mature nature if the source material .... like the recent half asked effort, j can't even stay awake through the movie 😴 😑 took me 3 attempts to get to the car bomb and I switched it off in disgust after that moment, what a cop out ..utter bollocks.

Not really sure if I'm the only one who noticed this, but Murphy actually retains his driving habits as well - back when Murphy "breaks in" his new partner, he purposely speeds up the ramp in such a way that the exhaust pipe scrapes the ground, leaving sparks. Robocop also does this during his first tour of duty as he leaves the station's parking area.

Boddiker and his gang were by FAR the scariest thing I'd seen in all my 7 years on earth. It really stuck with me; more so than any horror movie shtick. I think they were just too...REAL to me. It was the first time I had ever been exposed to the idea that a human being could be so deeply evil and violent. I even had a hard time with 'That 70's Show' because all I could see in Red Foreman was literally my worst nightmares hahaha.

PRE-FUCKING-CISELY! You took the words right out of my mouth. I was the same exact age when I watched this (7 in ‘87) and I think that profound effect was watching such vile people brutally torture and take the life of such an innocent man (Peter Weller was such perfect casting because his face- his eyes- seem so innocent and virtuous), and it wasn’t a scary dream monster or a faceless, larger-than-life killer in a mask. It was just a bunch of ultra shitty guys; guys who you might run into on the street.

Love this movie so much, personally, my favorite scene is when murphy is at his home, getting the flashbacks, the moment he realizes and remembers the truth - his physical reactions and the change in his posture and (mouth) expression as he walks away is just so emotional for some reason.

Ronny Cox, the guy who plays Dick Jones, is amazing in both this and Total Recall. Always gives speeches and breakdowns on the crimes he's committing. Miguel Ferrer was always a great actor too. It's a shame he seemed relegated to TV shows instead of more top movies.

Robocop had THE ending to THE film. He states his name when asked with a smirk and it just cuts to credits with that awesome song playing in the back. There's no mid credit scene, there's no scene of him getting back to his humanity through going back to his family or anything like that. It's short and to the point, making it one of the best endings in cinema

Yep. I get criticized for rewatching these classics, but they still top ranked movie genre lists. Today's action/horror/sci-fi is like watching sugared-up spastic children. No patience, low intelligence, self-absorbed, and weak flighty characters. It's not hard to make these classics, it's not about money. It's about good writing and directing, and trusting your audience with a cool idea.

Great video! Probably my favourite film of all time. First watched when I was 10/11 and the violence was so brutal, and seen it about 50 times since! As I get older the more nuanced scenes hit me harder, like the gas station scene when Robo confronts Emile and the realisation from both of them that they've already met is absolutely masterful. And the scene when he returns home, the music is just exquisite. Also it was criminal that Kurtwood Smith was overlooked for any acting awards that year, his portrayal of Boddicker is just pure evil. Surprised what wasn't mentioned is in the shooting range, Robo shoots off the arm of the target and then the body and then the head, just like when Murphy was murdered by the gang. Also spawned the RoboCop Rap which is one of the best things on RU-vid

Robocop and Aliens were my 2 favourite movies as a youngster. They are still amongst my favourite movies 30+ years later. Always go back to them, never get tired of them, and usually don't trust the judgement of folks who don't like them. 80's sci fi, action masterpieces......along with Predator.

My favorite movie of the 80's (along with Aliens) and I adore so many films from that era! Its effects, story line, gore.....everything was so effective and innovative. Even Robo's costume looks brilliant. Now you will probably hate me guys, but I'm a huge fan of Robocop 2 (1990) and Robocop: The Series (1994 - 1995) too

Great review. I kinda wish you had included that part in the club scene where one of the dancers catches the gun out of the air after Robo slaps it out of the other dude's hand. It was so natural and hilarious like "oh cool free gun, love when that happens!"

I never knew about the body paint/thermal imaging thing. That's cool. Old school prop departments got hellaciously creative back in the day. The muzzle flashes from the weapon arms on the ED-209 was actually cotton balls pulled out to elongate and thin them out and grain of wheat light bulbs inside the model's arm. They matted out the rest of the scene from the flashes and synchronized it with the rest of the stop motion animation. The final composite looks pretty convincing when run at normal speed. The prop guys also made jokes about the really quick and dirty wiring they did for the model for the bulbs and how they shocked themselves multiple times. I miss the days before CGI took over everything.

I always thought the spear through the chest was another Jesus reference, not a vampire reference (a Roman soldier speared Jesus in the chest while he was still on the cross to make sure he was dead), but those religious .... er ... Easter eggs were completely unnecessary to me. This movie works so well on so many other levels, and has so many layers to it - it's just brilliant through and through. I actually thought the recent remake wouldn't have been bad if you considered it on its own, but it just doesn't hold a candle to the original. Great job on this video, by the way. Couple of things I'd add: it's brilliant that Murphy's just a low-level beat cop (not a detective, like he was in the remake) because that makes him a "small cog in the big machine" of law-enforcement, and then OCP turns him into a literal component of an actual law-enforcement machine. Also, I love the way this movie keeps it ambiguous whether Robocop actually is Murphy restored to life, or whether "it" is just a machine that's started to think it's human because it can read the leftover memories of its organic component ... Food for thought.

31:24 The USB type thing on Robocop's hand also looks a lot like a middle finger. Boddicker says "Sayonara Robocop", and right after that the device pops out, looking a lot like he is flipping Boddicker off before killing him. That had to be intentional.

As many times as I've watched these movies backing the 80s and 90s, I never knew it was set so far in the future. I thought it was set closer to the original blade runner, set in the late 00's. Still one of the best 80s movies if not one of the best movies of all time!

Starship Troopers was an amazing book made into an entertaining movie. Robocop is simply one of my favorite movies of all time. The late 70's to early 90's was my favorite era of movies.

Great video and nice breakdown! It is on of my all time favorite movies! Some references you have missed in this video: In the news report it is stated that Clarence was sought in connection to the deaths of 31 police officers. Frank Fredrickson would be nr. 32 and Murphy nr. 33. Obviously another subtle Jesus reference. When Lewis confronts RoboCop after his "dream", she tells him: "Murphy, it's you!". Later, when she comes to his rescue at the OCP shootout, she resonates this, exclaiming: "Murphy, it's me!". Imo, another example of this kind of resonance (or foreshadowing in this particular case) is when Emil runs into a parked car with his motor cycle, and in the end scene he is ran over by a moving car and splattered because of the toxic waste. Furthermore, in my mind RoboCop's heart, that is stabbed by Clarence in the final scenes, has always been the "Yamaha Sports Heart" advertised in the beginning of the movie 🤣 First saw this movie about 30 years ago, when I was 11, and I've seen it maybe about a hundred times by now, but I still keep catching new references and easter eggs everytime.

I was in Dallas two months ago and made it a point to head down to the local City Hall, the building used for OCP headquarters. Even without the matte painting addition, it’s a creepy enormous building that looms over you like a monster.

This movie is so iconic and so many memorable scenes. I know the scene where Murphy is shot kind of shook me as a kid, the way his hand exploded felt realistic and I always remembered that scene very clearly, also the scene where ED-209 malfunctions and destroys the board member or whoever, and the scene where the guy is melted by toxic waste.

I first saw this as a kid in the 80s, had a toy of his, and loved it for how silly it was. When I revisited it in high school, around the time Starship Troopers came out, I realized the brilliance of it. You can see a lot of similarities in the way Starship Troopers and Robocop are presented. Would you like to know more?

Despite the fact that I hate when people try to lump different movies into the same “universe,” Robocop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers could very well fit into the same universe as being different stories set during different time periods. Major credit to Verhoeven for underpinning these popcorn action flicks with master strokes of satire.

I also watched it as a kid (born in 82) and I always assumed it was just another cartoonish movie filled with violence but after watching this I can see that's far from the truth. I absolutely love Starship Troopers so I'll have to give this a rewatch.

Back in the day, when ITV showed RoboCop, they edited out/replaced the swear words... "Once I even called him Asshole" was replaced with "Once I even called him Airhead" and "Die you Bastard" was replaced with "Die you Blaggard".... Also when they aired Die Hard, the infamous line became "Yippee Ki Yay Kemo Sabe"

In my youth, I was allowed to watch all the Schwarzenegger movies and loved them all. I wasn't phased or afraid or anything. I saw Robocop once and it scared the bejesus out of me, still to this day!

Paul Verhoeven is one of the most underrated directors of his time. So much of his work just went completely over people's heads. They would say he glorified violence and was pro fascist... not understanding his parody is a negative comment of the direction society was going in. If you watch Robocop and are like "Hell ya! That was awesome!..." then you're probably part of the problem... That's the mirror that pretty much all Verhoeven movies attempt to hold up to the audience.

My absolute favourite movie of all time.. It has everything! I did read once that when Murphy dies, the screen goes black and stayed that way for 3 mins or something. The idea being is that is the time it takes for the brain to completely die. Test audiences started to leave however as they thought that was the end of the movie.. so they cut it down. That's really funny to me :D

Appreciate your detailed review of this multi-layered film. The world-building is just so amazing ("I'd buy that for a dollar!"). However, for me, Verhoeven's ultimate masterpiece was Starship Troopers, produced a full decade later...more mature in many ways than this one (and more nuanced, evidenced by how many idiots completely misunderstood it), plus the special effects hold up much better (not surprisingly) almost 30 years later.

I was disappointed by Starship Troopers. They did it as satire instead of doing the story straight. And they left out the main stars of the book, the powered armour suits.

I still can't forgive Verhoeven for not reading the book and for some reason believing it's fascistic, and I also think he missed the mark by saying his film critiques fascism. The society in the book and the film aren't without their flaws, but they are not fascistic. Still, how cool it would have been to see those suits, as opposed to the crap we get in one of the sequels.

Dude... I say the SAME THING (well, in many cases, same THINGSSS): Robocop is a PERFECT movie, right down to all the little different sound effects, especially when he busts into the board meeting at the end, which is the basis for a hilarious inside joke between me and one of my boys during our week long Vegas trips back in the day lol (ROBOCOP influences drunk/contraband shenanigans in Las Vegas sometime in the 2010s, bet u never had that one on ur WEIRD THINGS ID HEAR wheel)... But every single thing works in this movie, it's NEVER boring, juzt the right amount of funny at just the right time ("Dick; I'm VERY disappointed in you" after a guy has been turned into crushed whole tomatoes for Sunday sauce 😅😅😅).... but the music, and that ending, smh......it's the nowadaya wayyyy overused CHEF'S KISS in movie endings.... Sad thing is, no matter how many millions of people have seen this movie, there's probably more who not only haven't, but probably refuse to, thinking it's stupid and shit... Ps--- I saw this movie, along with many MANY other movies deemed rough for a norrmal young teen/pre-teen, but it was right up my alley, being a pretty messed up kid lol---- and though I often "used" toxic waste when playing with my gi Joe's and stuff, the toxi waste Emil, ugh...I hadbto close my eyes when he's crossing the road and gets goo-ified. 😅😅😅 There's something about freaks and ghouls in day time....gassyccaavkakcla.... gives me shivers

Fun fact. A buddy of mine in the fire department, who was a cop for a time just saw this movie this past year (he's young). He said the dialog in the entire locker room was the most realistic cop dialog he ever heard in a movie about cops.

This was my childhood. But I haven't seen it in so long. This is a great video man, its rife with nostalgia and now I wanna watch it again. Its probably underrated as an actual movie and what the commentary if the story is, because it's typically seen as a gory action movie.

Great video and what a nostalgic movie! I saw it for the first time with my 7 in 1987. From so much watching, I already knew the dialogues and text. For me at the time, it was a very useful way of watching movies in English and a second language to learn (i'am from Portugal). An iconic movie that aged well, within its limitations and technologies at the time, it will hardly be surpassed by another movie in the genre. If there haven't been any to date, then there won't be any more, either in context, history, characters, etc. Every work, whether books, movies, etc., I think it has a bit of truth behind it and that the authors themselves will look for information about it. What seems ridiculous to us to see in certain films, sooner or later becomes reality, especially science fiction ones. For example, we never imagined the existence of a mobile phone and even more so on a touch screen... Here is. Thanks for the video and memories.

awesome breakdown! also, the intro cityscape (8:03) is actually the Detroit skyline (complete with the now-demolished Joe Louis Arena). the film does present a pretty grim future for my city, things were really bad here during the 80's... come visit us one day and see how we're rebuilding!
