"I like it!" Murphy's death was so violent because the director said that since they didn't have a lot of time to develop his character they would have to crucify him to get the audience's sympathy. I really like RoboCop 2. It's directed by the director of The Empire Strikes Back and the main adversary is amazing. The guy who animated ED-209 animated the villain and it's so cool. It's not really gory at all. The sequel does answer some of the questions you have. Particularly about his family.

I disagree. RoboCop 2 changes the characters to become too one-dimensional. Especially the CEO of omnicorp. In this one while he obviously turns a blind eye to a lot of things he does at least seem like he does think his plans are for the benefit of the city. The second one just turns him into a one-dimensional evil guy and it kind of sucks... And even the commentary, while this movie is a satire for many things the second one was super on the nose to the point that it goes from satire to parody almost...

We don't talk about Robocop 3, though. Skip part three, go straight to Prime Directives. It was a televised miniseries where each of the episodes are an hour and a half long, basically accounting for four extra movies. It brings back the vibe, the violence, and heart of the first two films.

Shooting for Robocop's mouth wouldn't have matter. In the novelization, his face was reconstructed to look like Murphy's and his skull was titanium and a mix of other highly dense metals. Nothing of his original body remained. The reason for reconstructing his old face was in case Murphy experienced total recall of his past life. The doctors and engineers worried that the human mind might not be able to take it if they looked into a mirror and weren't even able to see anything that remained of themselves. Being able to at least see your own face and recognize yourself would help keep your sanity.

I feel like he still had to have some type of partial organic digestive system left as well. Because in the movie, they mention it by someone asking _"What does he eat?"_ So he still gets at least a fraction of his energy from consuming processed food. I assume this was done specifically to be able to feed the part of his brain that still remained behind and that cannot simply just be fed by something else (a battery, for example) like the rest of his robot body does. His brain is still organic, so it would still need a steady supply oxygen for energy and organic matter for replacement of dead cells with new ones (proteins and probably more) for it to be able to maintain proper functions. Or it's simply a case that they are just so medically advanced that they also managed to construct a fully functional synthetic digestive system along with a synthetic circulatory system and a synthetic respiratory system as well.

Bob not having any relationship to Alex Murphy is integral to the corporate message: corporations do not care if you live or die, Bob wasn’t a murderer, just an opportunist. He didn’t care who died, he just needed a police body to turn into his pet project. I don’t think he was really going out of his way to be evil, he just was a narcissist.
@888zzz
@888zzz Год назад
One reason this movie is incredible is its high level satire of corporatocracies. Its criticism of the military industrial complex, other forms of corporate welfare, gentrification, heartless and psychopathic business values, police suppression of the poor instead of addressing the causes of poverty, promoting technology that industry profits from at taxpayers' expense , infotainment, privatization, commercialism, consumerism, business propaganda, etc. It's not just an action movie with an amazing musical score, acting, special effects, set design, etc. With appreciation of its accurate satire, the movie deserves a 10 out of 10. Robocop is one of my top five favorite movies for several reasons.

Some fun trivia: Peter Weller, the actor who played Robocop, dream was not to be an actor but to study and teach Renaissance Art History. He got his Masters at Syracuse, and completed his doctorate in Italian Renaissance Art History at UCLA in 2014. When he taught classes at Syracuse, on the first day he would tell the students to get out their recorders, and he'd run through his character catch phrases. "Dead or Alive. Your coming with me." "Where ever you go, there you are." Robocop, Buckaroo Banzai, etc. He'd go through them all, then say, alright the rest of the semester we'll be talking about Renaissance Italy and wouldn't discuss his film work again. He has a 4.9 out of 5 on RateMyProfesor.com. The director Paul Verhoeven is a real interesting case. I won't go too far into why he is both one of my favorite and least favorite directors at the same time. I'll save that for when you inevitably do his best work, StarShip Troopers. There are 3 main (American) Verhoeven flicks: Robocop, Star Ship Troopers, and Showgirls. Total Recall is an Arnold movie that Verhoeven directed, and Basic Instinct is a Michael Douglas movie.

Bob was responsible for Murphy getting killed. He mentions that he had the police restructured when he talks to the CEO and that candidates have been identified. There are a few lines from the cops that support this idea. They say that many new officers have been assigned to Detroit and point out that they don't get support when they need backup. Murphy and Lewis should have had a swat team back them up. Later in the movie we see that a swat team does exist and can be deployed very quickly ( when they attack Robocop )
@TheCastellan
@TheCastellan 9 месяцев назад
The time Robocop takes place in: In the 1988 Robocop arcade game, when one starts a game, there is a cut scene (with Murphy getting shot) and it says 1990. In the film, we then see the OCP technicians and scientists having a new years eve party. Therefore, the film takes place in 1990, and Murphy, as Robocop, begins his journey in 1991.

I have a personal story about this one ... The guy who played the first guy to be turned into hamburger by ED-209, Mr. Kinney, was played by Kevin Page. He and I attended acting classes together for a while. Kevin had a reputation as something of a jerk -- no offense to him, it was a _long_ time ago, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people also thought I was a jerk. When Kevin got the _Robocop_ gig, myself and other students in our acting classes would get together and go to multiple screenings. When he was turned into hamburger, we'd all cheer and clap. The other audience members would stare at us like we were insane. Why would we be cheering when a character is shot full of holes?! My other story about Kevin is more personal. He and I used to lift weights together. One time I was doing squats and was having trouble with my last couple of reps. Like a dutiful partner, Kevin was coaching me through it. Then, out of nowhere, the following words issued from his lips: "C'mon, Bill, get it up there! Ya gotta have _biiig_ legs to take curtain calls!!" I burst out laughing and just about killed myself trying not to buckle under the weight of the barbell on my shoulders.

Another film similar to this with a dead person / revenge theme to it is Darkman with Liam Neeson and also Swamp Thing.

Peter Weller (Murphy) made a number of decent sci-fi movies in the 80's and 90's - The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Leviathan, Robo Cop 2, Screamers. You would probably enjoy Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai

That boardroom scene was all sorts of messed up. Why was ED-209 loaded with live ammo for a demonstration in a building? Also, if you noticed at the end, the gun they used is still in the room all those months later, presumably loaded with real ammunition. ED-209 itself is a wreck: it's feet are too large for stairs despite supposedly being designed for urban police work, instead of fixing that issue they purposely installed a pig squeal to alert others that it's in distress, it doesn't have hands so it can't arrest anyone, and it has a huge black grill on top for no apparent reason other than "it looks intimidating".

*Been one of the favourite films since I first saw it 30 years ago as a child. Most females are turned off by the gory violence. It's a sci-fi classic though.*

It’s subtle in the movie and more explicit in other sources, but cops were being transferred to the most violent precinct of the most violent city on purpose in the hopes a good RoboCop candidate would be... “created”. They finally succeeded with Murphy. They wanted a brain based robot (though he’s more cyborg) because laws and situations are contradictory and theorized a brain could handle them better than a full robot (like ED-209 failed to do in the boardroom), but they wanted him to still be mindlessly obedient.

Fyi Murphy was wearing kevlar body armour hence why he took so many shots at the start, also after becoming robocop, his face was not real, his whole head was metal and the copy face was applied on top as a tribute to Murphy as the donor. So a bullet in the face would not be a problem for him.

A Classic. A brilliant satire on corporate greed too. This was when they made these movies properly. Also great and sadly accurate on what human life means, especially to big business. Nothing. Paul Verhoeven said about the scene where Murphy is gunned down at the beginning, that he wanted it to be Satan killing Jesus, because it had to be brutal. They were killing off the leading man. Made the payoff at the end so much more powerful. The movie was also purely about Murphy. Murphy may have been turned into Robocop, but his soul was fighting back. That was one of the movie's main, truly great strengths.

I hate the modern trend for calling a sniper rifle a 'sniper'. A sniper is someone who uses a sniper rifle. It's a rifle first and foremost.

Yeah, Kurtwood Smith (Clarence and, yes, Red Forman) played a lot of really despicable characters for much of his career.....which made his debut on That 70s Show such a whiplash moment for audiences. lol.

Asking how much of Murphy is left; it's never really said, but it's assumed the only parts of him to go into Robocop is his face and part of his brain. Everything else is entirely mechanical.

Two of the many people considered for the role of Robocop were in a movie together that you've already watched, Total Recall, Richter (Michael Ironside), and of course Arnold Himself. Luckily, the right choice was made because Peter Weller is brilliant in the role.

LOL: Seeing both of your happy faces at the start of the video and contrasting it with your faces on the thumbnail: Priceless! 🤣👍 Since you already reacted to Total Recall, after this, you need to watch the final (Director) Paul Verhoeven film in his trifecta of cinematic classics: Starship Trooper (1997)

Bob's a little worse that you think. He had the best Robocop candidates transferred to the worst precinct in the city so that they could be killed and turned into robots. That's why Murphy was transferred, and Bob explained that to his colleague.

The dialogue suggests that Bob has had suitable cops moved to more dangerous areas, that's why Murphy is transferred from 'Metro South'. Director Paul Verhoven is known for his violence on screen. You've already done Total Recall, how about Starship Troopers, to complete Verhoven's sci fi films?

A lesser known Paul Verhoeven movie that I would recommend is "Flesh+Blood" starring Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh. A medieval action movie set during the Thirty Years War. A precursor to "Game of Thrones" Warning: Strong stomach required.

The director Paul Verhoven is known for extreme violence in his movies (and pushing the envelope in any way possible). You should check out _Total Recall_ (the original from the 90s, not the mediocre remake) that he did too, which is also ultraviolent but great nonetheless.
