RoboCop Features Cinema’s Smartest Shootout in a Cocaine Factory

"Your move, creep."
The year… vaguely near future. The setting… Old Detroit. The hero… a robotic cop resurrected by corporate greed fighting to regain some of his humanity. RoboCop, in a word, is awesome. The Paul Verhoeven masterpiece has everything you’d want from the 80s; goopy squibs, stop motion animated robots and a literal shootout in a cocaine factory. Clint, Cal and Alex dig into the incredible staying power this movie has thanks to its brilliant satire, why the extreme violence also has good comedic timing and why the campiness in Verhoeven’s career is not a bug, it’s a feature.
Meanwhile, Omni Consumer Products developed a version of producer Dan’s algorithm that can actually walk down stairs.

Robocop is probably the most masterfully made movie. It's concise, it's fast paced, nothing is wasted on film. It's edited like a box of puzzles, just extraordinary editing and cinematography, and the acting is amazing, most of the characters are cast against type. Ronnie Cox and Kirkwood Smith used be cast as wholesome nice guys, and Nancy Allen was known as the bitch girl, like her character in Carrie. Here she's a badass. This movie is the best film ever made, in my opinion, and my absolute favorite of all time.
@laustcawz2089
@laustcawz2089 7 месяцев назад
Nancy Allen, following "Carrie", was in "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", "Dressed To Kill" & "Blow Out". Ronny Cox went from "Deliverance" to "The Car" to "Beverly Hills Cop" to this. Both seem like natural progressions. Don't know much about Kurtwood Smith from before this.

@@laustcawz2089Kirtwood played villain of the week on an episode of The A-Team and a morally grey character in a movie right before doing Robocop. So he was already playing that type of guy, he just took it to 11 as Clarence Bodicker.

RoboCop is one of my all time favorite movies. I watched it for the first time when I was 13, and only cared for the action and violence. It wasn't until I watched it as an adult that I appreciated the satire and snarkiness this movie has in spades. I refuse to watch the 2014 remake, because this movie holds a special place in my heart

Definitely a top 10 favorite films for me. Gets better every time you watch it! I need to gush. Not only is it just a highly entertaining film on the surface . I mean, it's absolutely hilarious and absurdly violent. It's all the subtext everything under the surface that makes it a masterpiece.

Absolutely agree that 87 is up there for best year in film, it's my personal favourite! Interesting you say Robocop is the first Verhoeven to have a budget - 10 years prior he directed the most expensive Dutch film at the time (Soldier of Orange, an absolute classic)

There are a couple of things I think deserve mentioning. One is that Robocop is perhaps the most accurate Judge Dredd film made, arguably even more so than Dredd. It was heavily influenced by 2000AD with some early prototypes of Robocops suit being almost identical to the Judges uniforms. As soon as you make the connection it seems so obvious as its exactly the kind of unhinged, dark satire the comic is famous for and has rarely been recreated so well in any movie. Im also surprised nobody mentioned the sound design and music which are excellent. The classic recognisable theme from Poledouris, the ominous hum of both the ED-209 and Robocop, the punch of the gun fire, Robocops every step having that satisfying noise as if you can hear some kind of dampening system compensating for the weight of the robotics, it absolutely sells almost every action in the whole movie. (Weller contributes to this himself as he notably reduces the amount his speech is stilted as he regains his humanity.)

As to your discussion about when this film takes place. You're right, it's vague on purpose, it is something that could happen "tomorrow." I always loved how the television show _Max Headroom_ said it: "20 minutes into the future." The confrontation between Dick and Bob in the bathroom, (my favorite scene) and later when Bob is outright killed because Dick ordered it, has always lead me to believe that the ED-209 didn't have a glitch when it killed that guy in the office, I think that guy was killed because someone, probably Dick, or maybe Bob, wanted that poor guy dead.

58:06 so Robo walking thru his empty, old home, and the music gets louder and more intense, and more POWERFUL in terms of it's EMOTION also, which of course begins to finally boil over in this MAN trapped in his new body, new LIFE, both of which he can never hope to change, or do anything to change, it's very powerful when youre invested in this film. Ive seen this movie, no joke, probably arond 75 times or so, and i STILL look forward to it, as it induces anger in me, it triggers MY problematic relationship with exacting revenge or wanting to see revenge put upon someone who deserves it.... so as i have discovered the many, MANY "1st time seeing ROBOCOP, reaction" videos here on YT, i believe only one of the 10 or so 1st time roboop vids i've seen, kinda even somewhat casually acknowledge it... This surprised me very much, as out of these 10 or so robo cop reaction vids, id say like 7 of them are put out by people who seem to portray themselves (or fancy themselves) as these next level, movie magic/story telling "experts" for lack of a better word. I'm not saying that watching ROBOCOP is akin to watching THE GODFATHER or SAVING PRIVATE RYAN for the 1st time or anything, but i dont think im reading the room wrong when I say that all of these reaction vids have absolutely fallen in love with the movie. So when he crushes the photo, the music begins to really kick in, and he is more animated and purposeful wth his movements as he leaves... to simply simplify ( ;-) ) it, i think you can sum it all up with just 3 words "IT'S ON NOW! lol... i can really go on adn on and no about this movie, lemme stop before i somehow end this little essay with a double long, rewiew of all the predator movies, and dont even ask me how i'd wind up there lol

Brilliant. Great to have you back on the regular. Btw John Wagner and Pat Mills (I think, but certainly Wagner) were invited to, I think it was the London Premiere or an early production showing and the producers who were working on the Dredd film at that time came up to them afterwards all apologetic "It's Dredd" Admitted it wasn't close enough to sue for but killed the film dead in its track.

When T2 came out I found it in one of the larger media stores in London, West End. For the life of me a can't remember whether it was HMV, Virgin or some other big name but the price tag on that VHS box was several hundred pounds. I immediately assumed it was for the rental market, and put it back on the shelf. Was a bit too steep for my 17/18 year old wallet. This was only 3 or 4 years after Robocop.

Saw this one first as a rental. 1986 was a personal highpoint for me in my young life ... 1987 was the first of 7 long, bleak, desolate, wasteland years. Robocop fit right into that, helped set the tone, unfortunately. ... In the '80s and '90s, Dallas was as described ... whole abandoned stretches, empty as could be. I once saw a midnight showing of Rocky Horror at an unrestored, pre--WWII grand dame of an old theater that appearred to be haunted, in 1996!

I only recently learned that the "bitches leave" line was in there because Verhoven didnt actually understand what it meant, not being a native english speaker much of the derogertory tone was lost on him and he actually used the term several times on set t refer to several women unaware it meant anything other than 'girls' this may sound odd but consider that it was the 80's when calling a man "dawg" instead of "my man" became a thing so you can understand his confusion

I am STILL reminded of - A CLOCKWORK ORANGE when I think of ROBOCOP Both films are about a violent lawless society, the lead characters are both called Alex, and are mercilessly exploited (one by a middle class fascist Govenment, the other by an even worse Corporation) Apparently Stanley Kubrick's films were becoming too expensive for Warner Bros Studios, & so he felt the need to make a film on the cheap, & so he chose CLOCKWORK to do it, even the cheap choices made, to film in REAL life locations was the same in both cases to save money, to avoid having to build expensive sets. Also both science fiction films were so predictive about a future society getting it so right, something the sci fi genra does best

OG RoboCop 2. Rogue City 3. RoboCop 2 4. RoboCop 3 Fck! The 2014 remake 😂 P.S. I absolutely love your 7 things videos 😛 And I have a "fan theory" about why RoboCop had the Blue Coloring instead of the OG Gray. My "thinking" is that the reason he had the Blue Armor because it, was more in line with being a Cop. They're often referred to "the boys" in Blue. Hence why he was "blue" in RoboCop 2 😝

@CineFix Speaking of the Ed 209 over killing that guy was a factor to it originally an X rating because that "scene" went on a lot longer, originally 😜 The MPAA especially did not approve of the gory presentation of the prototype ED-209 and Murphys execution. the bloodiest shots were cut out of the first scene and a lot of alternative footage was used in the other - only the DC shows Murphy loosing an arm in the gunfire. On top of that, alternative footage has been used for the car chase at the beginning as well as in the finale. The censorship of the ED-209 scene torpedoes Verhoevens initial intention. the scene was deliberately planned as comically exaggerated to get some laughs out of the audience with the "Somebody want to call a paramedic?" line - the dark humor is watered down in the edited version, as Verhoeven criticizes himself in the audio commentary 😛

Banter, there's no knowing how long it will go on for. Most people (including myself) found some of the symbolism went past them, I only know about the religious symbolism from watching one of the behind the scenes documentry's the film is only 1 hour 43 minutes long, but isnt it jam packed with symbolism, some more obvious, some less obvious, ROBOCOP counts as an Art house film, as well as a mainstream action thriller, This films strength is it's social comment about the reality of life in the 80s. MORE SO than being just another "fun" action thriller to sit down to with a beer & tv diner, after the foot ball has gone off. When I saw FLESH & BLOOD I thought this is well made, it has a quality about it, but it flopped/tanked, I thought given the right material, this Director could make something classic, and with ROBOCOP he did,

I gotta say that Turkish Delight is a better movie than Robocop and maybe Soldier of Orange, Elle, Black Book too. But from Verhoevens Hollywood movies, maybe....

Nah, it’s just to old fashioned. The acting is really weird to modern standards. See the the scene with the horse eye. PAARDENOOG. Just weird

@@MrJimheeren Yeah, but the movies from the seventies and that generation are normally the best movies in the world. With some exceptions. And Turkish Delight is better than the trash they make today in the Netherlands and the rest of the world.

The MPAA rating discussion is correct. It’s arbitrary and there is no magic number of how many F Bombs or S words can be said. How one becomes employed by them is also unknown. They also don’t have any concrete rules explaining each rating in detail. They’re purposely vague so they can arbitrarily assign a rating. Also, will there be a correction video about ED-109? The comments here are borderline calling for murder.

It would be all but impossible to set fixed criteria to rate a movie, it's the same around the world, movies are complex and depend on context. The US has just typically been more conservative with ratings(especially related to sexual content) than elsewhere.
