Probably because Old Man didn't wanted to overdo emotional reaction on Robo, the same reason why he forbid Wendell to use the lighter on him too much, so it wouldn't fry his brain, and the reminder of Clarence, instead of one of his gang, would've sent Murphy into full Max Payne nightmare level mode. Apart from the obvious reason of them needing to collect the data for their "Afterlife" project, I got the feeling that Old Man genuenly cared about Robo as much as he can possibly care about anyone at all, and didn't wanted to hurt him too badly. And it's not like "Wendell" cared about his role much in the first place.
