"They're there to provide a commanding presence". How dare you go to the park and try to just relax. YOU ARE BEING WATCHED....and.....this will be abused. This is another step closer to 1984's Big Brother. It makes it official....we are a police state. Make sure there is police presence to maximize intimidation of the citizen at all times. This should be stopped. Do people really think this is a good idea? We need to stand up and just say NO! NO! NO!

+Robert Briggs The way I look at it is this. It is another tool to keep criminals in line. Criminals look for opportunity, as they discussed above. These robots take that away by being able to record and report suspicious activity. Once the combined data is all synced up and processed they will be able to better predict that activity. I think they should avoid adding in any actual deterrents (tasers, non lethal firearms, etc...), but having that presence is key. A mall in my area had a problem with abductions of young women. Not kids, actual young women. It was a nightmare and they had to increase their security to stop it. Imagine if these robots had been patrolling the halls and they knew about a few problem areas. They don't need breaks and never have to close their "eyes." They can watch those problem areas 24/7 if need be.

@Ryan-rl5mh
@Ryan-rl5mh 8 лет назад
+Kent A. Vander Velden How are these things oppressing anyone? By recording a public space looking for criminal activity? Cameras do the same thing. Are you gonna tell me that we shouldn't have cameras in retail or public spaces? They aren't programmed to come at you, and they don't even have the capacity to do so. They aren't going to follow you home and force entry to your private space. I ask again, how does this oppress anyone?
@kentvandervelden
@kentvandervelden 8 лет назад
+sonomakid Do you believe that we have insufficient, enough, or too many cameras in public spaces? (Forget retail)
@Ryan-rl5mh
@Ryan-rl5mh 8 лет назад
If they do not act as a deterrent to criminal activity then not enough. If they do, then we have enough. I'm not sure what we would determine to be too much. Perhaps when there is too much input for a guard to process? That is the point of public spaces though, they are public. I don't expect, nor should I have, privacy in those spaces. If I want privacy I can stay at home.
@kentvandervelden
@kentvandervelden 8 лет назад
+sonomakid That seems a very logical argument. The fear of public spaces and the promise of safety through surveillance is an easy way to sell continuous surveillance. Additional cameras will be easier after the first batch because the public has accepted the idea. Creative people will think of new uses for ubiquitous cameras, and creative people want to demonstrate their creativity, perhaps without considering how their idea might be evolved. Traffic cameras first offered to serve as witness to accidents and then became speed cameras. You may be OK with that, and that's fine. When public surveillance is absolute, and crime still exists, the separation of public and private will have eroded further. We already have lots of cameras in our homes. There are six cameras, three microphones, and two Internet enabled GPS units on my desk, counting those in phones, laptop, etc (and I'm probably missing some.) There are already companies who monitor their remote employees using the camera on their corporate laptop. That apparently is OK to some as well, after all, many have cameras on them through their work shift in brick-and-mortar locations already. Oppression is not just about forcefully entering people's homes or otherwise laying hands on them. Oppression is also anxiety created by continuous monitoring with fear of anything they do or say being taken out of context or infringement of the rules automatically met with punishment. The slippery slope leads to recording everyone, everywhere, and continuously (re-)mining it for rule infringement and for marketing information.
@Ryan-rl5mh
@Ryan-rl5mh 8 лет назад
Kent A. Vander Velden An excellent point. I guess I personally have never felt that anxiety, and as such have no frame of reference personally to have resonated with your initial comment. I definitely see where you are coming from now, and that makes a lot of sense. My personal feeling currently is that I would never worry about being recorded in public as I do not do anything that warrants some sort of backlash from the powers that be. However, after reading through your explanation it does appear that we need to draw some sort of line. Who is to say that 10, 20, or 30 years from now something I do every day won't be considered illegal, or if not illegal, publicly shameful. At that point I will wish that someone had throttled back on surveillance. Of course by then we both know it will be too late. Very intriguing, and something to think about. Thank you.

He's right about the building mounted cameras. The biggest problem is that stationary cameras usually have grainy, crappy footage and never up graded. Besides they keep reusing the same tape and it just wears out. At least the robot can send good video back wirelessly if possible follow a situation and get more information that a mounted camera just can't do. But, I do notice some businesses put up fake cameras in shitty locations and they actually deter a lot of crime.

Genius! It's bringing in tourists to the mall-- what kid hasn't wished he could meet R2-D2? Only problem I saw is it can't move because of all the little kids hugging it. It plays quiet spacey music which sounds like what R2-D2 would hum to himself in a good mood. Adorable. For security, it's great, because I'm told it can see telephoto, and in the dark, and also the normal security camera, necessarily mounted up out of reach, loses faces under a hoodie. R2-D2 is photographing up, can see the face under the hoodie. Facial Recognition technology is already here, though they're keeping quiet how good it's become.

I'm all for this as a potentially useful technology, but this sales pitch from Stacy Stephens is great for playing the "name that logical fallacy" game. 1:10 A camera on top of a building absolutely does provide presence. For all the bad guys know someone might be watching the CCTV. 1:30 How does an R2D2 robot make a would-be criminal any less able to commit a crime? What ability is this thing taking away? 1:45 Yeah, who may be watching through a fixed-position CCTV camera? How is the robot any different? 2:55 Yes, if they're replacing a security guard, they *are* taking that job. Not that it's a bad thing.

@peterjackson4517 7 лет назад
An authoritative presence like police officers. Yes, making innocent people feel scared. Ok, a small percentage of our population commits crimes and they should be dealt with and if this robot helps then great. However, it begs the questions: if innocent people feel afraid around cops or security robots doesn't that say a lot about our police force and how they treat people? Police are "suppose" to make people feel safe but it's quite the opposite. I have good experiences with "most" cops but I'm white so that makes a huge difference...

Neat, but I can see this being an on how we deal with privacy and safety. Ideally, we'd like a society that can have both simultaneously, but it can't. This may undoubtedly provide a better sense of security, but you lose some of your right to remain anonymous (anonymity entailing the freedom for you to consent to be recorded/documented in any way for any purpose for any duration). More protection means less freedom in a broad scope of the word. Think about the role, and compare firemen and policemen. We don't have firemen randomly patrolling around checking houses for fires, but that's essentially how the police force operates. They roll around as a presence for something that may or may not happen and, practically speaking, in some place they probably won't be to stop crime in the first place. They're responders just as much as firemen and should be treated like them. You're practically as safe if cops don't patrol as you would be if they did and weren't around you, which is why people still get away with crime, and why potential criminals aren't scared. To quote Ben Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
