Thank you, Quint, for this amazing video. Our family acquired its first Etch-a-Sketch at Christmas 1960, and we took it on vacation with us the following Summer. My siblings and I spent hours playing with it as my parents drove us hundreds of miles down the two-lane highways that still served most of the country back then. I had always dreamed of being able to control it with the precision you've demonstrated with your contraption. It is exhilarating to watch it in action.

Pretty fantastic! For science fairs, the trend may be to change the name to science and engineering fairs. This more engineering than science. With that name change, dropping the requirement for a hypothesis, which is generally contrived, more would likely be excited about the science fair. Keep on building cool stuff!

There was a time in history where the line between science and engineering, and even art and philosophy, was blurrier. I think it's all part of the same human pursuit of knowledge. In this day and age the humanities are long-divorced from real science, but the marriage between engineering and science can be made stronger. Let's be honest, kids just want to have some fun, and robots are better than their mom's Candy Crush phone.

You should make it so you take a picture of something and it draws it on the etch a sketch. Put a camera on it and then say cheese.

I wish I had time for the fun projects you do. Do i have a cnc no but could make one. Do I have a 3d printer yes. Work shop for all sort of repairs, got computers RU-vid, yep humm a cnc machine Um nope, but wait I have all the other stuff lets make a cnc machine great. Dang gotta go make some repairs, no more time dang it.

J M As a machinist, I'd argue that G code is the perfect starting point to learn how coding works. It's not nearly as technical or versatile as java or python, but it gets you in the right mindset that everything does something and has to go in a certain order. Once you really get i to it, it's basically like learning an alphabet for machines.

New subj: MONEY. You said you were short. Have you thot about getting a PE license? This assumes two things: That Oregon's laws are similar to Calif's., and that you have ten years in the practice. A PE license allows you to increase your income, yet work just as much as you like.

Oh I love TOT but like a lot of people I've wanted to do this for a couple decades. His video on CNC is epic! There are a lot of automated etchasketches online but I think mine is the only one you can pick up and shake. RU-vid is the excuse to finally do these projects we always wanted to do. The stop motion was an afterthought but I love the result!

Could figure out how to automate etch a sketch. Couldn't figure out how to automate digital photography. I wouldn't be caught dead doing the same repetitive task hundreds of times over.
