Thank you for citing Protoculture Addicts in your vid. As I worked on it for nearly 15 years (as it's main writer, reviewer, sometimes Editor-in-Chief, etc.), I was wondering if anyone had noticed our magazine at all. We published over 100 issues and tried our best to give the fans what they needed. But the internet was not very nice with paper magazines, so... But I had fun, made a good (if frugal! lol) living out of Anime and I did get to meet ''Uncle Carl'' a few times (and a LOT of other great people too!). He was a nice guy and a great storyteller! I was a kid back then and those were the days...

Dude, I think I remember you. I owned about a half-dozen issues of Protoculture Addicts and the first three or four issues of Mecha Press (when they were oversized and awesome). I remember all that PA did back then. It made an impact. It's cool that through this video, I get to meet the likes of you and William Chow, who I reconnected with a few weeks ago.

@@SlipstreamFirst Yeah, I was also Mecha Press's main writer (Geez, I must sound so fulll of myself... Lol). It was a magazine me and a few of my friends thought about around pizza and a few beers. Me (I'm the big, smiling idiot holding the model box in the intro photos) , Pierre, Étienne, Dominique and a few others... Looking through the newest Hobby Japan and the Gundam Sentinel Mook, we told ourselves ''Hey! We can do that! Let's try!'' I was a pretty good English writer (for a French Québecois in those days!), Pierre was one of the best graphic designers around, Étienne knew a lot about sci-fi, Dom was a modeler (and so was I...). So we decided to start a magazine. Just like that! A few kids from Québec, Canada, taking on Hobby Japan and Model Graphics! We did our best. I hope you enjoyed! Man, that was over 30 years ago.

@Martin Ouellette Thank you for Protoculture Addicts. Living in a small Pennsylvania town, I only ever saw one issue for sale, but for a brief time it was the most treasured part of my library. There was nothing else like it. My fundamentalist family forbade me from watching anything else that touched on the adult themes Robotech tackled. Love between cultures. War being horrifying instead of a chance for glory. Non-binary gender identities. And so much more. And reading your work? Knowing other people understood this show, and wanted to explore all it offered? It let me feel like part of a larger community, at a time when I was struggling to make sense of my own identity. Thank you.

25:41 I don't know what happened in the US, but in other parts of the world, Robotech was far from forgotten. In latin america Robotech aired multiple times throughout the 80s and 90s and on each rerun there was the associated merchandising accompanying the series. No other cartoon from the 80s endured for so long.

Thanks for the video. After the Palladium going nuclear I ended up dumping it and about every RT product out of my life. I just wanted to put an end to that chapter in my life once and for all. 6 some years later, its creeping back in. Even if it ends up being a home brewed game. I've started working on a New Gen tabletop game. It will have a co-op survival horror option or full war game option. Since I 3D model and have my own printer developing the physical stuff will be easy. Writing the rules down and play testing will be the hard part. Thanks again for the video , it leads me to believe a tabletop game is sorely needed.

Very good video, well done! 👍🏻 Like the intro, especialy the music, where's that from? About the animated show(s), I think they should remake the very first show + Zero & Plus, like "Space Battleship Yamato", which is & looks pretty sweet, and reboot everything after that, for a new worldwide audience, but also keep the original timeline as a 2nd option (like "Star Wars EU"). Now that Harmony Gold has opened up a bit, they & Japan can go full steam ahead with about everything, I guess...

My take on this: I have the Robotech RPG books....and they are good but VERY flawed. Many spaceships, mecha, and such are either too big, too small, too powerful, etc. And there was even stuff made up in there that was extremely innacuratte. . Later, Palladium got the rights to Robotech back, and came out with a new more streamlined, with better rules. It tackled Macross, Robotech Masters, New Generation, and The Shadow Chronicles. As well as some expanded ideas like the REF's time in space, and the invid's genisis pits. Again...there were flaws. Many of the characters weren't listed as OPCs or NPCs, so you had to dig out the older books for that....same with many space ships.

I know you were focusing on official materials, but shame you didn't give a shoutout to the Argentinian Project Valkyrie that was shamefully slapped with a C&D by Harmony Gold before it could be fully released. It is pretty much what any RT fan wishes for in a live action adaptation, even having a cheeky nod to the awful Robotech movie. Great video despite the truncated ending. I also have a stronger passion for Robotech than I ever managed to for Macross and this was a great love letter to it.

Oh, and one more thing: I wanted to make a Robotech RPG group...but it didn't work out. Anyway, I was working on rpg campaigns that continued the story from "Shadow Chroniles" like how The Haydenites may forseen the Robotech wars for centuries, and chose this time to strike, because they are convinced that humankind will destroy all known life in the galaxy till there's nothing left....or how a lost Zentradi fleet is found....stuff like that.

Your retrospective on Robotech and everything relating to Macross is well documented. However, there are a couple of things you left out. First off, Robotech Battlecry wasn't the first true Robotech game to be released. Long ago, at the height of the Nintendo 64's popularity, GameTek were planning to create and release Robotech: Crystal Dreams. Unfortunately, the game was cancelled before its release, probably due to very same legal mumbo-jumbo that prevented any Robotech and/or Macross related from being used or released. Speaking of which, in 2006, ADV Films at the time released the original Macross on DVD, complete with an English dub, with Mari Iijima, who voiced Lynn Minmay in the Japanese version, reprising her role but in English. The DVD set itself has been out of print and no one will ever redistributed them because of a certain voice actor who I will not utter his name for personal reasons and the aforementioned legal nonsense straight from Harmony Gold themselves. Other than that, I have the upmost respect for both Robotech and Macross. Perhaps one day, I will have one of those Valkyrie/Veritech fighters in my collection. Keep up the good work. BTW, aside from those strenuous escort missions and trying to protect your comrades in some missions, Robotech Battlecry is an awesome game. And I hold it in the highest regard, especially for the sake of nostalgia. 😉

Macross 7 was actually well liked and did well in Japan. It spawned an OVA series and a recap movie recently. The music (which rocks) was super successful and spawned too many to list albums. The bad rep it gets is from Western audiences, mostly spread from the 10 people who got a hold of the fansub or raw. In my experience the hate mostly comes from hard core Robotech fans who don't realize Macross has a different tone from Macross. Robotech's dub really emphasizes the military aspect which US audiences like instead of Macross' more typical anime "fun" feeling. Macross Plus on the other was better received to western audiences than to Japanese audiences.
@PrinceGastronome

@sidearmsalpha

@@PrinceGastronome Yeah, the huge emphasis on Basara and his music really brings it down for me. In SDF Macross/DYRL?, it made sense that an idol's music could affect an alien race but you didn't see Valkyries with sound systems. Even Plus and Zero found a good way to incorporate music into the story. I tried to watch Frontier, but the music just wasn't my thing. I like the Valkyrie designs for both Frontier and Delta but the huge emphasis on idol singers just kills the story for me.

The future of the Macross franchise was ruined for the western world the day they decided to change the "cultural shock" concept into a "magical sound energy" concept. The former is a genius and believable concept whereas the latter is just silly nonsense. It's understandable that under some cultural idiosyncrasys the latter concept is well received (or at least not rejected), but for western audiences it just doesn't work.
