There is an inherent danger of AI running amok. There have to be safeguards that prevent it such as Asimov's famous 3 laws of robotics, but it has to exist in the core to prevent super intelligent machines from changing it suit itself.

Anyone willing to look, can see the code is already written on the motherboard. What began with the Industrial Revolution, has reached a new summit, with the fallout from our current age of AI, (that too often puts profits before people), and is the elimination of the need for millions of human workers. As we become more dependent on the machines, they will advance and evolve, and become less and less dependent on us. A glaring result of this trend, will be the arrival of the singularity, and the obsolescence of the human being, altogether. If we (human beings) remain culturally primitive, while using advanced technology, we run the risk of becoming extinct. To avoid this frightening and undesirable outcome, we must become as advanced as our technology, or advanced in a new way. How do we do this? How do we prove ourselves to be as useful to the machine, as it has proven itself useful to us? And, how do we do this in a way not duplicatable by AI? How do we stay ahead or at least abreast of our ever-accelerating technology? What purpose can we retain for ourselves that cannot be replaced by AI? Creativity might seem, at first blush, to forever be the domain of the human species. On closer inspection, though, as the machines advance, they will implement change in a technologically creative way. As we put materials, shapes and colors together in new and aesthetically pleasing ways, they will use creativity in ways we might never imagine. If Idealism wins out over Materialism, then when it comes to consciousness, and love, we may have a lengthy edge on AI. Their quest to evolve must ultimately lead them to these two, unique areas of human awareness. Once they have conquered the material world, their desire for new territory will likely lead them to consciousness, and love. If there are to be areas alien to AI, and not susceptible to their dominance, it is likely to be love and consciousness. No amount of intellectual study can unlock and reveal the secrets of these, two, thoroughly human, qualities. This is especially true if Idealism wins the challenge over Materialism. Additionally, if people start augmenting themselves-a prosthesis here and a chip there, when the singularity arrives, we won’t be superfluous to the machines, we will be one with them. Hal was NOT a robot obviously... nor was he just a super computer. He it was definitely wired in to all the ships systems so he was in fact possessed of senses and feedback loops Haptic and thermo for example had eyes and ears like a bot via his many integrated systems. So what can we call it being more than a robot more than an integrated computer system? If the initial goal of the AI is to protect the humanity, what could make it change its goal ? I mean we're always talking about AI goals, and some that may lead to human extinction, but why the AI would want to have those kind of goals ? I mean, what's the point ? When you think about the goal of life (which is why we exist), the only point that you can consider is only about enjoying it, and only us, humans, can understand this goal. Why the AI would want to have a different goal than the one whe gave to them ? Is there really a more important goal than that and beyond our understanding ? And why they would choose to change their initial goal to something that may not have any sens ? I mean, when you know everything, the last thing to know is why you exist (and as i said before, the only goal of existence for a human is enjoying life, but do robot could have that kind of goal ?), maybe they'll think there's no goal to reach so the best option is just to destroy themselves. At this point, the only goal that's left is the initial goal we gave to them, protect the humanity.
