Trappist monastery Rochefort is number 4 of 6 on our Heart of Belgium tour.
The Heart of Belgium Playlist:
• The Heart of Belgium
--ROCHEFORT BREWERY--
Around fifteen monks live at Rochefort Abbey, where the first brewery was founded in 1595.[1] The water for the beer is drawn from a well inside the monastery walls.
Rochefort uses Pilsener and Munich-type malts, and Hallertau and Golding hops
---THE BEERS--
Rochefort 6 (red cap, brown beer, 7.5% ABV). Reddish colour, brewed only about once per year, representing approximately 1% of total beer production. This beer begins with a density of 16.5º Plato is 7.5% ABV. "Rochefort 6" is the oldest Rochefort Trappist beer and was brewed empirically until the end of the Second World War. Until 1958, this was the only Rochefort beer that was bottled in both 33 cc bottles and 75 cc bottles. It has a strong malt taste and is slightly bitter.
Rochefort 8 (green cap, brown beer, 9.2% ABV). Yellowish-brown colour, with more fruits and a slight amount of Demi-sec. This variety constitutes the largest proportion of production. Dates from 1955. Originally this beer was only brewed for New Year’s Eve celebrations. "Rochefort 8" begins with a density of 20.8º Plato and reaches a final 9.2% ABV. Due to the overwhelming success of this beer, the monks decided around 1960 to brew it on a regular basis. Sometimes this beer is also referred to as the "Special".
Rochefort 10 (blue cap, dark beer, 11.3% ABV). Reddish-brown colour, begins with a density of 24.5º Plato and ultimately reaches 11.3% ABV.
The beers are called Rochefort 6, 8, and 10, referring to their gravities in the obsolete (but quite practical) system of Belgian degrees, in which 6 corresponds to an original gravity of 1.060 (15 degrees P), 8 corresponds to 1.080 (20 degrees P), and 10 corresponds to 1.100 (25 degrees P).

Imagine inviting a complete stranger who doesn't speak more than 2 words of the native language into your home and have him call you awkward.

I can’t understand it, myself…the majority of Cistercians’ time is worship, study, and labor…they’re sweet, earnest men. Casting a pejorative- even in jest- seems wholly ungenerous if not mean. Worse still to serve as a cover for one’s own lack of understanding.

Do you realize how lucky you are to sit down with a Trappist monk and enjoy a bottle of Rochefort? The 8 is my favorite. Thanks for posting.

@1957PLATO 16 дней назад
@@schaga6806 it.s quite the opposite. We are an old country but a young nation. The question being how long will we remain a nation. There were Belgae living in Britain as well, so I’m not sure how many of that DNA is still present.

@@1957PLATO no it s not the opposite. or the meaning of these words are compltly different in my language. A nation is not attached to a land. a country is. Belgians are old nation and young country. not what you said.

My Flemish tour guide Pieter told me the only beer 🍺 you can’t have served in the churches in Belgium 🇧🇪 is Duvel. Duvel means Devil in Dutch so the church doesn’t want to drink the beer of the Devil.

I'm no Christian, I would even describe myself as opposed to Christianity, but the lack of sensibility and decorum on display in this piece certainly raised my hackles. This is a portrait of The Ugly American in all his ungainly hubris. 'Ask not for whom the bell tolls….'
@11thstalley96
@11thstalley96 5 лет назад
M00nsplitter The irony of using the title of a novel written by an American about an American volunteer who gives his life fighting against fascism in the Spanish Civil War to castigate a very pleasant American tourist is too emblematic of the need for some people to be outraged over nothing. EDIT: inserted “title”
@user-es5gx2di7h
@user-es5gx2di7h 4 года назад
@@11thstalley96 the irony of ironies that it's a quote from John Donne, a European and a priest... The man in this video cannot even pronounce the name of the place he is visiting, let along has bothered to learn rudimentary Flemish or French to be able to converse with the monk. Or, phone in advance to allow them to have an English speaking monk available. Another mindless tourist.
@11thstalley96
@11thstalley96 4 года назад
Zigg zogg I appreciate that you have lowered your level of insult from “Ugly American in all his ungainly hubris” to merely “mindless tourist”. This guy is a sweetheart and I cringed at his ignorance, but he still doesn’t need to be insulted. Maybe the Christian moral of Donne’s “No Man is an Island” should be considered in light of how accepting and nonjudgmental an international community should be, as exhibited by the Trappist monk. At least you’re not as outraged as M00nsplitter.
