I would add excessive crimping to the list. I see many novice climbers clinging way too hard to handholds, when they could relax and use a more open hand grip, preventing forearm pump and reducing injury.
@GeekClimber
@GeekClimber 7 лет назад
This is a good one. I also saw a lot of novice climbers clinging way too hard on handholds. I also mentioned about the crimping problem in my injury prevention video.

Thanks for the excellent video. As a beginner myself, climbing with my much more experienced friends, in addition to what you told here there are two more things I think you forgot: 1) Keep your body as close to the wall as possible at all times. Obviously not always possible, but a real energy saver when you dont have to counter gravity as much. 2) while pure arm strength shouldn't matter as much, just as you explain, but grip/finger strength very much does. As does muscle endurance. I have friends that are less strong than me, but with better technique and much better muscle endurance and they can climb much longer than I. Point is for beginners to understand, that even if they climb correctly, they will get tired faster due to not have trained their endurance, and thus shouldn't feel bad about themselves.

I've introduced a looot of people to bouldering/rock climbing over the past year, and I've developed an almost identical list of four things to pay attention to. 1) Use your legs more. Probably try to move both feet for every one hand hold. (I think that helps materialize the advice to use your legs more). 2) Use your toes, better traction and you can push yourself up an extra few centimeters. 3) Keep your arms stretched as much as possible, especially while thinking. 4) Lead with your hips, it helps extend your reach and can help you keep one arm mostly stretched while still reaching to the next hold. That's what I've been telling everyone, but the quads being 2x the strength, and the stretched arms being 1.7x definitely beefs up the argument for those two points. I've intuitively learned not to barn door, and I pass that on by example, but I haven't been able to step back and realize the recurring error in beginners there. I'll definitely throw that into the advice I give from now on. I appreciate the video! Super easy to understand and 100% true!

thank you for materialising the 'using your legs more' thing because it's honestly so confusing at the beginning
@Zejety
@Zejety 6 лет назад
Beginner here. I appreciate the advice from both the video and this comment. One thing I'd also like to contribute which I've recently picked up from a similar video is to keep your center of gravity close to the wall. Many people told me to keep my arms longs since I've started but I tended to interpret that as leaning away from the wall on my arms, when what I should have done is bend my knees more. That also leads back into #1 of putting more emphasize on your legs.
@again7pyms
@again7pyms 6 лет назад
Zejety yes! I had(still have haha) the same problem when trying to keep my arms straight, I often automatically stick my ass out haha ;'D I'm trying to bend my knees more :'D
@randyohm3445
@randyohm3445 6 лет назад
When a new climber gets stuck, like 80% of the time what they need to do is move their feet up. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen someone get stuck because they can't reach the next hold, but they have one foot stretched down on a low hold and are ignoring higher footholds that would move them up easily. So I tell people who are just starting out "when in doubt, move your feet up," and "feet, then hands," just to get them to remember to pay attention to their feet. I've even seen people climb with bells on their shoes, just to remember to keep track of them!

Great video. I'm an amateur climber and this is my first time ever hearing of barn dooring. I'm excited to see how it goes next time I climb. I will say that for some people it's better to have a little bend in the elbows depending on how warmed up and loose their muscles are. I injured my left elbow because I wasn't warmed up and I put too much weight on a straight arm.
@GeekClimber

the quads are far more than 2x stronger than biceps haha
@GeekClimber
@GeekClimber 7 лет назад
Hey Justin, if you look at the numbers of an average person's leg press vs bench press it's approximately 2x. An example website will be strengthlevel.com/strength-standards.
@user-zl5gi8sv7u
@user-zl5gi8sv7u 7 лет назад
bench press is not a bicep dominant movement. Just saying I can barbell curl (bicep isolation) waaaaayyy less than I can leg extension (quad isolation) Just saying. Doesn't really matter though you are still right.
@GeekClimber
@GeekClimber 7 лет назад
Thanks Justin for the correction. In the video I mentioned "at least" so I am still technically right, but I am pinning your comments so others can see it if they are interested in the details.
@Benijermin
@Benijermin 7 лет назад
Justin Miller I was also going to mention that pulling with "arms" uses a lot more than just your biceps. Same with "legs" uses a lot more than your quadriceps. I think you know that, and I agree with what you're saying, your example just wasn't the best.

Dear Nerd from a fellow nerd. I'm glad i found you even before i started climbing. It was a new thing to get intrigued by. Now we went once and were hooked. Now i'm officially hooked after the third time. Love it. But i will say, i saw several dudes not ladies. Grabbing forearms after a send and were really hurt or sore. I don't want an injury. You have talked about that before with your problems. Any more tips lately. Work up to it. Don't hangboard. or do hangboard. do calisthenics instead on off days. Enough rest days before going again. Work the core and legs more? You and magnus got me inspired and fired up to go. Then i can only do v3's but not all of them yet. Crimpy 3's are good. slab or sloper 3's not so much.

@macruizphotography
@macruizphotography 7 лет назад
Jesse van der Heijden devils advocate on that though. Ashima weight to strength ratio especially her hang time is far superior most climbers. for instance I just got started back into climbing and weigh 219 now vs my 125 when i was 11. I'm way physically stronger now with same technique. (you don't really forget) but I have hit a ceiling with certain moves where dynamic climbing is killing me because I physically can't hold on or do campus moves till I cut weight or get far stronger (or both).

I think a big fifth one would be "Using the inside of your foot too much". Beginner's are frequently "duck toed" against the wall (straight facing the wall with both feet turned outwards). This puts your hips far away and makes most moves much, much harder and farther.

the reason you sit static on straight arms is less to do with strength and more to do with the fact that you aren't engaging as many muscle groups. Also that wasn't barndooring (although it can happen when on both one sides hand and toe), and being on one side can be advantageous depending on the route.

Straight arms does not always apply when climbing slab and the footholds are better than handholds. Also beginners usually have rental shoes and also too big shoes. When you buy your own which holds better you usually start trusting and using your feet more.
@ashley1scott
@ashley1scott 7 лет назад
Rest on straight arms as it's 1.7 times stronger than on a bend arms ? If you are resting on a straight arm then it is grip strength that will fail as you are transferring your weight to bone, where as on a bent arm it will be muscle failure that will cause you to fall.
@GeekClimber
@GeekClimber 7 лет назад
It's probably even more than 1.7 times. An average guy can deadlift a lot more weight than the weights for barbell curl.
@anteeantee8144
@anteeantee8144 2 года назад
strength is still a component iam a weight lifter and for me total strength is important for climbing relative strength is important: your strength in relation to your body weight you dont have to be super strong if you are very light (at least for climging) and the heavier you get the more your total strength grows but the curve flattens more and more your relative strength decreases the heavier you get of course at the beginning technique is more important and will give you the most progress i started bouldering and iam super strong in the hook i can hang for ages on a handle with one arm but iam super weak in the pinch because iam very heavy and never pinch so i started working on my pinch

Im sure that little girl does have weak biceps, but she also probably weighs around 70 lbs. I'm 220 and feel like I could really use some more arm and finger strength.

Straight arms are only optimal in overhangs. On slab rock, it is better to pull with your arms enough to set all your weight on your feet.
@GeekClimber
@GeekClimber 7 лет назад
No, straight arms are still better than bent arms on slabs. Unless the foot holds are so good that you can put your entire weight on your feet then it doesn't make much difference. You can always adjust your body position so you are leaning on the wall while your arms are still straight at the same time.
@xxrgxxcasco
@xxrgxxcasco 7 лет назад
Geek Climber that is true, but if you are on a slab, and the confortable holds (slab holds are small) are at shoulder height, stretching your arms would mean leaning too far away from the wall, forcing you to grip tight. I guess we can agree that we are both right, and it is just a matter of the situation the climber is on.

The point on arm strength is a little disingenuous. It's not about arm strength in a vacuum, but rather proportional to your weight. As a 100kg guy starting climbing, arm strength is absolutely a limiting factor in many routes. That girl you showcased probably has a strength to weight ratio 4x or more what I have.
@leongtinglui4600
@leongtinglui4600 7 лет назад
The problem is with finger strength. Straight arms require more finger strength hence hard for beginners.
@GeekClimber
@GeekClimber 7 лет назад
I don't think so, it depends more on the holds. The holds on V0s and V1s are mostly jugs.

i don't understand the last one, what's barn dooring, and what is the correct way to climb?
@GeekClimber
@GeekClimber 7 лет назад
It means only your right hand and right foot are on the wall, or your left hand and left foot are on the wall. The correct way will be having both feet on the wall, right hand and left foot on the wall, or left hand and right foot on the wall.

Mr geek, you do not understand... The struggle of being too weak is true and it arises with the enemies most commonly known as "crimps" and "overhung climbs"
