Nathan and Katie head out for some climbing in Namadgi National park, to make the most of the final weekend of daylight savings.
The forecast was good early in the week, but got worse the closer we got to camp, which was harrassed by strong winds overnight.
After hiking to the lookout in in the morning, we were greeted by moderate winds and light rain. We decided to go down and have a look at exactly how much water had reached the rock. Answer: A lot!
Earlier in the year we tried to climb at Mt Wellington in Hobart but bailed when it started to rain. This time it would take more than that to turn us around.
"Little Hermes" is a 2 pitch 50m, grade 12 trad climb that should be fairly easy on a dry day. Katie found it hard following, but for Nathan the first pitch had some technical moves, but great protection and lots of ledges. A final slab had us both with lumps in our throats though...
Due to poor route info, we went the wrong way for the second pitch. It looked like a hard start and we had to "French Free" the first half of it for the difficulty.
After protecting a scramble up to rest in a cave, we had one more bit of climbing which would have been a lot less exciting except for setting off a tractor tyre size boulder ("ROCK!") to slide down the slab, bounce and shatter all the way back down the hill. Lucky we were the only people out there.
After an epic 7 hour day, we had a good night with some new friends back at Honeysuckle campground.
