Atom is and always will be one of my favorite drummers because of his work with AvA. Best band ever... and Atom's style is just such an integral part of that awesomeness. He has inspired my own drumming a lot.
i reserve my opinon on AvA. okei fine ill give it to you. the rocket ship didnt quite make it to space x level 😋 im glad toms refformed really. we all get a bit lost sometimes hehuehuehuheeeee
im annoyed this needs mentioning. he is even more chilled than ron welty, notorious for being more chilled than absolutely anything you threw at any of the noble gases. i wonder what happened to hiim actually
You should interview Andy Hurley from Fall Out Boy. Personally, I’m not a FOB fan, but it would be a good interview. You could ask him “Andy,, why do I play your songs better than you do?
Loved this Cobus, *excellent* first pick! We Don’t Need To Whisper will forever be one of my favorite albums, and I completely agree that nothing sounds the same since the songs he did with AVA. You can’t put anyone else in a song like The War and have it sound the same.
This is amazing! You’re an extremely natural host, this all felt like an easy conversation between friends (which I guess it kind of was). That hour absolutely flew by. Dream guests for me would be my main drumming influences: Dom Howard Travis Barker Chad Smith Good luck, Cobus, this pod slaps
I've been watching your videos for over 10 years. This is awesome man. So interesting, funny, down to earth. You've always been great at talking Cobus, ever since you started adding it to your videos. So humble. It's refreshing. I'd love to see more of these podcasts, as well as be able to listen to them via other platforms.
The discussion of performing for visuals, as well as tracking drums honestly and "human-ly", really resonated with me and my values as a drummer. Great convo! Looking forward to more of these!
I'm a guitarist, and not a drummer, but I love watching drum videos online. Totally appreciate this conversation. Reminds me of Jim Adkins' Pass Through Frequencies podcast
I love listening to podcasts, but more specifically, podcasts with hosts and guests who are passionate, knowledgeable, and at the same time humble and personable. You have all the right ingredients to make this a very successful podcast. Keep it up, Cobus! I loved this first episode.
Lekker Cobus! Looking forward to future interviews. Petar Janjic and Calvin Rogers are my requests for future quests. Both match your energy and creativity.
Such a great interview. Gentlemen, you RULE!!!! Atom, you are an absolutely brilliant drummer. Your playing at Angels & Airwaves was phenomenal. Whisper, Empire, Love are my favorite AVA albums. I listened to them when my children were born and grew up, and I still listen to them to this day. Thank You for all. Cheers from Poland, Guys! 🙌🤘
I love his honesty about the blink albums. I love all of them but I can see how the untitled album transcends blink and can appeal to different tastes.
Just thought regarding the end part of the chat. Keep the professional ultimate edited polished videos coming, BUT how about a live one take version of the same song too? Double the content for the same piece! Awesome first episode, I’ll be back 🤙
Ohmygawsh an hour of Cobus talking yaaassss. I’ll listen to your beautiful accent and rambling all day long. Pls pls pls interview Adam Gilbert next. He’s a drummer and runs a channel called drum abuse also plays live for STARSET. Keep making video bro!
The end part about chasing discomfort is really interesting - but what do you do when you do spend the 2 or 3 or 6 months persevering with something and still hate it, feel no better and have seen no noticeable improvement? That's been my experience of it and it's pretty frustrating to feel so broken.
Have josh dun of twenty one pilots on! Here are some others: Ilan Ruben Travis barker (if ever possible) Daniel Fang (turnstile) Andy Hurley (fall out boy) Jason bonham!!
Great interview. As far as Adam’s take on racism and bigotry, as Christian’s we are taught to not hate the sinner but hate the sin. It’s definitely possible to love an individual while disavowing the sin.
havent seen the rocket from the crypt guy in ages. not since he ruined my favorite band of all time... just kidding man if i ever gain any influience over absolutely anything i will write a letter to someone and ask them to reintegrate you into the offspring. because i said so 😆
Thanks for watching! I hope this conversation inspires & motivates you. If you're struggling and/or just want to improve the quality of your life, I highly reccomend therapy 🤘🏼 Check out this video's sponsor BetterHelp and get 10% off your first month of therapy with this link: BetterHelp.com/Cobus
No way.. In-depth videos, serious and rich in experience, have no viewers..., they are not visual..., human brains are shrinking, They wither at the pace of technological advance!...
I've been keeping track on Atom's work since AVA, I love how he approaches a different rock genre with Against Me, and it's awesome to see him now collaborating with Matt Skiba in Alkaline Trio. #TeamWillard all the way
Bro I clearly remember you playing with him what was probably a decade ago now, and how nervous you were (but still killed it obviously). Remember it well and it was so sick!!
My dad is a drummer so I knew I was going to drum... but what taught me in the end was micro- analyzing Atoms playing on "We Don't Need To Whisper" at age 10 . And I swear at some point in my life I could play that album front to end without missing a beat. He's one of the BEST drummers today, and I'll die on that hill defending it.
Untitled is arguably their best record, I personally love all the Tom era records because I grew up on them but Untitled has THE best guitar tones, lyrics and drumming while also being wildly varied song to song. Great stuff.
Love this Cobus, your Heaven cover with Atom is probably my favorite piece of drumming on RU-vid. Makes me nostalgic about past times. Thanks for the memories!
Man, so great to hear you guys talk about this stuff. I recently covered Atom's drum cover of Santigold's "Creator" and was super stoked that he saw it on Instagram. I wish I had started making videos years ago, but nevertheless I'm glad to be doing it now. I'm grateful to have this platform to share my love of drumming and possibly connect with the drummers who inspire me. You guys are both top tier, thanks for sharing this!
To everyone who sees this comment, keep pushing in life and never give up. Can't wait to see you successful one day and May God bless you!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yup, love this. Love your covers. Love you. Just keep doing whatever and being awesome (which is just being you). Been a longtime fan, and wish you the best.
I love Adam's playing so much. I was just listening to Scream, Dracula, Scream a few hours ago and wondered if there were any RU-vid drum cam videos of his and came across this. Great conversation, thank you for doing this Cobus. I especially loved, at around the 57 minute mark, Adam talking about leaving in the mistakes. Listen to Brendan Canty from Fugazi, and you'll hear tempo changes all over the place. But it is just perfect and that band is so ridiculously good. As was RFTC.
Loved the interview! Only thing was I was curious for him to talk about joining Alkaline Trio. Would have been nice to hear him talk about how the experience has been so far. But it was a great watch! Love the idea of interviewing drummers in this podcast-like style. I'd really like to hear Riley Breckenridge from Thrice as a guest some time!
This was amazing ❤ Nothing but respect for all the hard work you put in dude. Would love to see if you could get any member of Blink 182 on for an interview, they are my favorite band, so that would truly awsome 😊
