awesome video. a bit surprised to see so many people so far up north plus how slightly rough the swell was. pretty cool to see a double hook up on the stickbait. the beach looks awesome for surfcasting as well
I used to go to Cape Kari Kari and Spirits Bay with my friends over 20 years ago. It used to be fantastic. Last time I was at Spirits Bay there was a really obnoxious young DOC ranger there talking down to everyone and generally being an ass. The sheer fishing pressure and numbers of people I saw was really sad. NZ is has changed a lot and not for the best.
Hi Scott, just wondering if you went across the rocks or over the hill as the tide looked a bit high to go over the rocks, Thanks. Awesome video by the way.
Hey I am heading to Spirits Bay with some friends in Jan. I usually only surfcast from the beach, is that possible at Spirits Bay or is it just rock fishing? Also how long was the walk to get to this spot?
The beach fishing at Spirits is also pretty good - look for gutters and holes etc at low tide and fish when the tide rises (theres a lot of beach to explore). The other spot worth walking into is twilight beach at Cape Reinga - walk to the west down the track - its a 30-40 min walk down and 1.5hr back up walk but the surfcasting is good there. This spot at Spirits is about a 20 min walk - best to walk in from mid to low tide or get wet crossing the small gutter along the rocks.
Yeah, I have the footage, haven't cut it yet. Would need some better footage of landing a king as the stuff I have is when I got smashed off...... will try and get it done soon....
Depends on the location - shellfish can be a better bait like mussels with cotton or tuatuas when surf casting. Sometimes Pilchard fillets work off the rocks if they are there but not taking cut pilchards.
No, generally not because the bottom is very rocky. If the swell was big, sometimes I would use a small 1/4 oz sinker so it could sink down eventually and not get washed back onto the rocks.....
Its a 3 piece Hamachi PE 6-10 lure rod, 10' long. Matched to a 14k twinpower. Really nice set up. loved how the rod was only 3 piece but still cast well and had a good bend to fight fish.
Been there done that with a lot more effort and a lot less result. Very over fished apart from random pelagics. Just sub'd, very informative trip report. As many are of your vids. Appreciated from a fellow LB fisho. You might find interest in some of my vids( as area/trip reports ). though a learner on the video editing.
