Great overview and analysis! And I say this as one of the relatively few Americans who’s been a fan of the likes of Oasis, Stone Roses, The La’s, Cast, Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, The Verve, Travis, etc. for years. This is definitely (maybe? 😅) one of the best rock albums in recent years just for the sound. Greg Kurstin really brought that fresh and crisp yet punchy production value that he’s fine tuned since “As You Were” and did the songs justice 💯 (Nice dig at the end to the hipster indie reviewers! They may have great musical taste in general, but my gosh they can be so insufferable with their “sophistication” 😂)
EXCELLENT REVIEW!!!! Well thought out, concise and detailed. I like the fact you listened to the album 20 times. There are many "reviewers" AND "commentators" out there who are talking crap about this album after 1 or 2 listens.
Thanks, Selector! Really glad that you liked the review 🙂 I believe in giving an album a fair shake, you can't really do that with one or two listens. Cheers!
Great review. I love Liam and John and think the album is a real guitar led classic , which we need more of in rock. Americans could never get their head around the fact that Oasis just stood there and let the songs do the talking,,, they were never meant to be guns & roses running around the stage in spandex pants ( gotta love Axl ). Just hope people give the album a chance. Where did it chart in America?
Thanks, Justice! Yeah, Americans definitely don't get it. Americans often just see the music as an avenue to celebrity worship, the music is secondary. I'm painting with a broad brush but Americans are more into the flash and surface than they are into the substance. I just looked at the Billboard 200 for US albums and this album is nowhere to be found.
Could have called the album "Lennon Hendrix 68" (about half the album sounds like that, in a good way, its very enjoyable)... Rainbow is fantastic, i just feel myself smiling away when that solo comes in. Thanks for the review, had no idea about the Tom Wolfe reference ✌️
Brilliant review. Oasis are the band I love the most, The Stone Roses are my joint second fave band ever. In first listens I was underwhelmed and disappointed by this album, but a couple of months on, it’s grown wings and sounds not so bad at all. John Squire’s guitar playing is sublime, as always. It’s a collaboration to dream of and it’s better than so much of the stuff around today It’s not ‘the best album since Revolver’ as Liam claimed, in typical Gallagher arrogance and defiant swagger, of course it’s not, but it’s still more than welcome Just Another Rainbow is such a brilliant song. Tune!!!
Thanks Ted! This album is definitely a grower. I think a lot of people that discounted it initially have grown to appreciate it after a few more listens. Cheers!
Spot on! I think a lot of the naysayers discounted it after a tentative listen and didn't really give it a chance. Happens with new releases all the time. People just don't have the patience anymore. Too bad since they miss out on great albums.
Spot on, Trevor! I didn't pick up on it at the time of my review but I do believe that the spiral pattern was likely based on a rose. Makes sense. Thank you!
Shocked to hear john is 61. Never even thought of what age he was. Stunned. Even though. It obviousky makes sense haha. Must be touring for hair dye money 😂😂
Terrible album with one hit song. His solo albums actually had a lot of very good melodic songs but this album has very few hooks to reel the listener in. One of the worst albums I've ever heard, an insult to those that are foolish enough to buy this garbage. This album is nowhere near as good as the seahorses debut album.
