Before they became a group, Richard (aka Slick Rick) and Gregory (aka MBG) played sports together, while Charles (aka Charlie Prince) preferred to remain indoors playing music. Richard was also into music, and he played drums, mixed music, and belonged to another group; however, this was never known to Charles.
Gregory, who was a photographer (and still is to this day), gathered the two together for a show performance in New Haven, Connecticut, at a club called the "Le Joint" run by his cousin Cody.
Richard did not want anything to do with Charles due to the fact they had a previous dispute about his childhood sweetheart. Therefore, he wanted another guy to go with him named Buster, who also lived in the building across from them. However, Gregory brought Charles anyway, along with both Richard and Buster. At the New Haven show, they had yet to come up with a group name, so they were just called them Charlie D and the Crew.
They performed, stayed out there with Gregory's family members for a several days and then returned to New York. They then decided to call the group Devilish Three. Unfortunately, Buster could not continue to be with the group because he was an MC for another DJ named Smitty Rock and his MC partner's name was Charlie Rock. That was when Gregory decided to take Buster's place. They were still called Devilish Three until they entered a battle at a club across the street from their building called Your Spot (formally a Burger King). A man by the name of Jerry Blood Rock changed it into a club and needed to get some known MCs to perform there as a grand opening. The Devilish Three happened to be one of the groups he asked. The only problem was they did not have a DJ.They all knew of a neighborhood DJ known as Kool Dee. Since Charles was taught how to mix and scratch records by him, they asked him to be their DJ for the battle. He agreed but they never had time to practice with him, and so they practiced amongst themselves. When the day came for the battle he showed up to DJ and while they won, they felt they needed to get a reliable DJ. That is when they met up with Mark (aka Master Scott; prior to that he was known as Rockmaster).
Scott was the DJ of another group who was also in that battle, but he decided to take the DJ position for the group. He was always on time for practice. They were inspired by The Cold Crush Brothers and The Fantastic Five, when they used to have their battles. They practiced at Gregory's mother's house from time to time, but their main spot to practice was at Richard's mother's house. To clarify the matter of there being two Slick Ricks, if one looks at the release date (1984) of "Request Line" by RockMaster Scott and the Dynamic Three (who started the label), and at the date release (1985) of "The Show" by Dougie Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew, the original Slick Rick was with the Dynamic Three and the other Rick was named Ricky D (who was with Dougie Fresh). Both groups were on the same label (Reality Records), which is why many people got their information wrong about these two people.

This is when rappers actually had morals and dignity in how they wanted to express their lyrics. It just goes to show you. You don;t need harsh language to make good music. Using vulgar language is taking the easy way out and it cheapens your talent.
@dazzledazz123
@dazzledazz123 Год назад
I feel like it's 2 takes on your situation. You either can rap about the good in life wanting to put smiles in people's faces or you can rap about your harsh reality. Many of the brothers in the ascension of rap music were criminalized either way. So some of then just decided they might aswell talk about their hood and their daily lives instead of listening to people rapping about martians or Adidas

This has a significant amount of meaning. My brother introduced it to me in 84' when it came out and has always reminded me of him. I've been introducing it to others ever since. "Roof is on fire" got all the attention but this track was always better. I NEVER knew there was a video until today. Somewhere he is happy I found this and thank you for posting!

This was so unique when it came out, and I think it still is. Love this. Though I've been listening to the, "radio", some people might know what that is, I've only called the request line a few times, fear of public speaking and all. But I always enjoyed listening to the segments when others would be put on the air, some interesting, others comical. Now we have on line, and it's just somewhat of a free for all, so it's easier to say what I'm thinking. Love this JAM!😆✌️(((((((🌈📻🌈)))))))

Debbie at the end knows whats up!!! Lol. But nah this is when music was music or hip hop in this case. Before it became commercial. I remember trying to copy the pop locking moves in this so I could do them Friday nights after a football game. 1980s was the best for us that was born in 1966 an graduated in 1984. Js

I love this song, it's just a shame due to commercial time that the had to cut the length of the lyrics part of the artists... I felt strange due to the fact that I was singing along lyrics that I've known by heart and then I find them out all cut out, it's a shame!

Sometimes you don’t need to see these people. There’s one god you’re looking awfully suspect.😆. Still listen to the record though. For something that came out about 1984. You can still listen to it. 🔥🔥🔥 An alternate idea I had for the video, would be for the DJ to press a button to 'activate' them when the person calls in, they would be in different random places/eras, like one could be in space on a rocket ship in cryosleep, one could be like a robot in a futuristic room/setting, and another could be like the DJ activates a bat signal sort of thing, and the rapper sees it and goes super hero mode flying through the air while rapping, or in a Egyptian setting dressed like a pharaoh, coming out a sarcophagus. Maybe it's just the weed talking, but I could envision that being incredible lol.

@redageny NY Hot Tracks debuted in the summer of 1983 and was notorious for playing mainly hip-hop and R&B videos. BET debuted in 1980 and has been playing videos ever since. BET played the first Hip-Hop videos although they did'nt play much of it prior to 1984. Both BET's Video Soul and NY Hot Tracks played Hip-Hop videos before MTV did (Run DMC's "Rock Box" in April of 84" was the first black Hip Hop video played).
