I was a rock musician, playing guitar since I was 8 years old - now I'm 49 years old. I started turning to Christ about 10 years ago. About 2-3 years ago, I started to feel that rock music is incompatible with Orthodoxy, this feeling was felt very strongly when I started learning church singing. I can no longer play and listen to this type of music. I didn't force myself. It just happened.

So true. The more time you spend with God, the less you desire anything else and the less you have to force yourself to give things up. So just focus on God and being part of His Church more and more and the rest will take care of itself.

I play several musical instruments. I notice that whenever I play any of my instruments, even classical music, my mind is almost totally absorbed in the music I'm playing. Not to mention the time I spend learning & playing. I therefore decided that this is not something I want to continue doing except for rare exceptions.

I love video games, I even want to become a game developer BUT they can never give you peace & consolation like Christ can. Listening to a priest, reading the Bible, reading a book by church fathers fills me 10x or 100x times more than the best gaming session. Also if not moderated & without restrictions video games can easly become an addiction.

make a game on how Christianity was spread! as an adventure through the world,from judea,to anatolia ,to greece europe and the middle east and the further east to india, and show the atrocities committed against christians and apostoles who tried to spreard the faith. because many liers say that chrstianity was spread with violence witch is a big lie.and many liers cherry pick some events and translate them to their liking.

As a 24 year old young man, i grew up at a time where videogames, media and the internet really began to devour people, and it certainly did me. I became orthodox and was baptised at 21, and got married at 22. Leading up to my wedding and the first few months of it I naturally desired games and fruitless media much less, and eventually began to feel guilty every time I partook in them. My wife was about 4 months pregnant and we had been married for 7 months when i played my last game. It was the original Spyro. Thank God my wife said “What are you doing?” I came to the only answer, distracting myself with childish things, so I made a vow to God that never again would I ever play a videogame, and now a year and a half later im immensely grateful God helped me to do it. It’s bad enough to waste time on tangible worldly things, how much worse on digital simulacra and anima that never existed at all? They are designed to enthral you and I will see to it my son will not become a slave like I did. With Gods help, you can too lads! It just takes time, dedication and growth. Godspeed!

“Working away from” Halo is much different than running *towards* God. As was mentioned on this video, spend time seeking the Lord, over time the fulfillment and joy of salvation will make other trivial things feel unsatisfying. Eventually the desire to seek God will be stronger than the desire to play Halo, and you’ll start to find you are spending less and less time playing. It’s not about cold turkey.

I love how in Orthodoxy there is this balanced, nuanced understanding. Growing up Protestant, it was either "it's all good" or it's all "the devil." Even for some of the objections here, Fr. Peter isn't outright condemning and forbidding. It's a matter of discernment. I used to love Pink Floyd like nothing else...but for all their deep philosophical insight, there's not much genuine hope in their music. It's a very BC sort of thing, like the Greek philosophers. I won't freak out if one of their songs comes on in a public place. If anything, I'll just think "hmm, great song....moving on...."

That's something that I didn't understand about Protestantism. Protestants say they refer to the scripture as their main guidance. When you read the scripture you see a Jesus that is always very moderate in His teachings and behaviours. The only time Jesus is radical is against the scribes, the Pharisees and the merchants of the temple. I can't figure out how such a moderate model could lead Protestants to by so harsh. I am not expressing a judgement but a real incomprehension. Kyrie eleison ☦️

@Procopius464 2 месяца назад
@@Hope_Boat I think the oldschool traditional Protestant mentality was to err on the side of caution, and if you aren't sure whether or not something is good or bad to just assume it is evil. It's basically a dichotomous system where gray areas are not recognized. When I was a kid, my mom just assumed everything was evil, if she didn't know what it was. Super Mario was evil, rock music was evil, super heroes were evil, etc., She saw nefarious motives in just about everything. However, seeing as how things have gotten in the 21st century, it does look like there are nefarious and Satanic motives behind most things. That being said, the modern mainstream Protestant churches don't seem to have this mentality anymore, and have gotten way too accepting. They are still really strict on some things, like alcohol, but when it comes to other things, like rock music, and how people are allowed to dress, they are way too lax.

I listen to metal from time to time. The important message here is do not drowned in Metal music but, rather listen to it without effecting your emotions. I also listen to a heavy metal Orthodox band called "Holy Name" all the songs are orthodox based and you will see the music videos with the backdrop of Orthodox Icons Christ or Mother of God. I listen to Metal when driving and then right after I listen to chants of the Monks and yes i chant with them in the car. Look at it as Metal music such as the band Holy Name bringing the bridge or gap to bringing non-orthodox to Christ. I know there are lot of people that follow them that are not orthodox but love that style of music. In God's timing they will be orthodox. ☦

I came of age in the late 80s early 90s. As a child growing up in those dark times without the influence of the Church, I fell into the pattern that many of my peers fell into which was to form an identity around music and art tastes. The music we listened to defined us. I was drawn into the so-called alternative music scene. I thought it was edgy and rebellious. I can no longer listen to such music and haven't for many years. In my household we listen to classical, international folk, and Orthodox chant.

As Fr Heers repeats multiple times in this video, there are lower and higher goods. Ultimately, if we turn to worldly pleasures for our consolation, we depend on them for consolation, which ultimately means we worship these created things. But just because we recognize that doesn't mean we will have the strength to give up all worldly consolations right away or even after a very long time. In fact, it practically never works out tha way because the process of purification is meant to humble us and show us that we really don't love God in the depths of our hearts and thaf we need Him to intervene for real. We just shouldn't kill the ideal because we like some activity that isn't compatible with it. Christ is the ideal. He never did and will never do a single selfish thing. We can at least do selfish things that we are too weak to live without out of sight of others so that we don't promote them. But killing or dragging the ideal to our level isn't the answer. In the end, God wants us to be happy and even to have pleasure, or else He wouldn't have created us to feel those things. We're just wrong about where to find them. That's the whole point of the doctrines of the Trinity and Incarnation. That God is love and that the true joy is to not live like an imploding black hole, for yourself. If you think you can mix these things, remember Christ's words about two masters. This isn't and shouldn't be about judging anyone. As Fr says, it should be about getting to a point where we ourselves don't want to be selfish and worldly anymore. It takes time and suffering, but it is worth it. And it's worth remembering that despair is definitely not of God and that He often allows us to be tempted to humble us. Killing the ideal is not the solution.

If below spiritual discipline you also manage to bless someone or your soul is edified with some other more common activity, I believe that with love and discernment you can well have it as part of your itinerary in its right measure.and always with the plan of perfecting your communion with Christ and the church. The more you look into it.. the more you'll be disturbed.. And the more you'll find the Occult.. which has been present in rock music from the beginning.. It's no surprise as why when you hear Stairway to Heaven played backwards he's saying "my sweet Satan.. he'll give you the 666".. This is just one of countless examples.. I used to love both metal music and video games to near idolatry. After becoming Christian, I still have a small number of metal bands I still listen to on occasion, but mostly I prefer silence. I still play video games, but not nearly as much. I'm reading more now. It's hard to imagine completely losing either of those old hobbies though, while I'm still on earth. I don't mind the idea of losing them eternally, but I can't imagine stopping completely while still here. It is partly because I am a musician myself, (not metal.. piano) and also a programmer and make my own games, so I get to participate in creating beautiful things. Philippians 4:8. It reads:"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." The degree to which i am able to find beauty or virtue in music (yes even metal) and video games, I don't see them as being spiritually harmful. But broadly agree that allowing them to dominate one's life is not good, and I've overcome that.

It’s funny mentioning rock and video games, as a soldier rock music at one point gave me some kind of energy that pushed me past my physical limitations in an austere environment, but since removing myself from the line of work that entails violence and a stressful way of living, and actually turning to and walking with Christ, that kind of music began to sound repulsive, including rap songs from my favorite artists, for some unknown reason it was like the separation of oil and water. And video games, it used to be a favorite pastime for me, but now I can barely manage to play on my Xbox for more than 30 minutes a week before losing interest. Needless to say, things I once had a passion for have gradually lost my passion as in time more of my passion went to Christ, and it’s not really explainable but it came with healing from all of the trauma and suffering I had endured during the short 26 years of my life. I used to have a perpetually negative outlook on things, but now in suffering I can truly find peace, much more than I ever thought possible. I’ve stopped relying on my own strength, (and I’m known for being abnormally strong for my physique), and understood that it is indeed God’s strength that alleviates my weakness. I see the whole world changing rapidly for the worse, so losing interest in passions for things that pass away isn’t so much a bad thing in my opinion, because even though the world is being swallowed up in darkness, I can spend more of my limited time in this body feeding oil to the lamp that burns within me and around me to that I can hopefully make that light visible to others who as I have at one point have lost hope in the fact that God indeed still has complete control over everything, and that one day the old corrupted world will pass away and be replaced with a kingdom that lasts forever.

There is a stark difference between secular music and Christian music. I cannot imagine the Lord doesn’t want us using musical instruments at all in this life, which includes the God-given voice. If it glorifies His name, or draws you nearer to Him, it is good. The same goes with the internet, electronics and anything in life. Electricity can lead to bad, but it can also lead to good, does it mean we shouldn’t be using it at all? I imagine the modern day saints used electricity and musical instruments. Discernment is one of the keys to living an Orthodox life.
@Procopius464

Using musical instruments is not inherently wrong, but rather it's how you use them. Most modern music is hot garbage, which to me sounds more like noise than music. I really don't, and can't, understand why the popular modern garbage is popular. But if you look at baroque composers, like George Friedrich Handel, and JS Bach, it is all very good. Look up "Eternal Source of Light Divine," and after that check out "Handel's Messiah." I don't at all understand the contemporary "Christian" music that they play on the radio and in a lot of newer churches. It's such garbage. I don't understand how it can appeal to anyone.

Check out the power metal band Judicator. The lead singer is an Orthodox Christian. They aren't an explicitly Christian band but have some very solid music. Their album "Let There Be Nothing" is all about the Eastern Roman general Belisarius and his relationship to the Emperor Justinian, his wife, war, and God. The album "The Last Emperor" is about the First Crusade. Another great metal band is Signum Regis, from Slovakia. They are more explicitly Christian and almost all songs are positive and uplifting. I heard a preacher once say that what is a tempting sin to one person might not be to someone else. So we each have to use our own discernment especially since we know ourselves. If you know that a drink at a bar will lead to you cranking down 8 more and getting wasted you should not go to that environment. Someone else might be there all night but have the self control to not engage in drunkenness. Same could be self control on gambling or video games. I personally struggle with specific types of games where I get extremely addicted and my family and relationship with Christ suffers as I allocate my time wrong. Some games I can play and have no issue stopping or putting minor increments of time in so those are the games I gravitate toward since I do enjoy gaming as a hobby. Ultimately your life as a born again Christian is to be dead to your old self and living ti glorify the God so spending more time in the word and prayer is a better use of your time or investing in others displaying Christs love

I listen to no gruesome overtly satanic bands that use certain symbols or bands that curse God or seem upset at God. Heavy metal is very melodic and uplifting. It has complex arrangements and it is based in classical music with its tone and texture. Ironically, I was just listening to a “screamo” (heavy form of emo/post hardcore rock) band earlier today, the song is called “Some Will Forgiveness, Others Escape”, by UNDEROATH. It is a song about Jesus. It is a very heavy song by a group from men that on first look, people might judge them. Their early years were very Christian based. Music is just that: MUSIC. I'm a musician and composer since 15 years, I made rock, then trap, then ambient/meditative music. I wasn't Christian at first but I feel I began to find the Holy Spirit though making music daily for years, by gradually understanding the need of temperance in modern music. Rock music can be spiritual but if played with temperance and if it's not an encouragement to sin (which would apply to some "post-rock" artists, even "doom-metal" artists, that are meditative). The saturation and dirtyness of the electric basses and guitars in rock/metal contexts, can be spiritual, the dark minor scales can be spiritual as well, they can reminds us of the suffering and darkness that exists in this world, but not to encourage us to sin, just as a reminder, to help to transcend the sins. The condition is that they should be wisely used.

I would add to anyone asking these questions to ask yourself if the media you are consuming is: Insulting or portraying Christianity negatively, promoting immorality, invoking ugliness or negativity, or becoming addicting. If the answer is yes to any of those then you should seriously consider why and if you want to partake. Now ask yourself does it promote any Christian values or virtues (even if not out right Christian)? If not it doesn't make it bad but it may be better to spend time with something more edifying. These are just guidelines I use for myself.

Americans still need to relasize that Orthodoxy is not Protestantism. We do not pick and choose. But its not radicalism either. Music, video games, if they evoke emotion positive by God's standard, are not inherently evil. But as the father said, they should be sidelines, and if only for our worldy pleasure are waste of time. Does not go to say that we are perfect, and can just drop everything off, but striving to be saintly is what he is right about. Metal cannot be Orthodox, the simple nature of metal music is completely away from Orthodoxy.
@Dan-x4o3m
@Dan-x4o3m 20 дней назад
But why is metal music inherently against orthodoxy? I find some metal to be inherently against Christianity in general, some of which is objectively satanic by nature, but some can absolutely be positive, and some is actually completely Christian in the lyrics and form. If we strip away all connotations from metal, all we are left with is highly distorted guitar with loud drums and bass, and growling or screaming vocals, which I don’t find to be evil or wrong, in and of itself. My viewpoints are based in my own musical taste, which has always been dominated by various flavors of metal. I would actually submit that the most dangerous forms of music to the soul tend to be of the popular variety. I don’t think even some forms of overtly satanic metal can compete with the degeneracy of modern pop/rap music. If we assume that the devil works quietly, not completely overtly, then the logical conclusion would be that overtly nice pop music would be more destructive than even overtly satanic metal. At the very least, a lot of metal tends to be complicated and technical, which if nothing else, lends itself towards being a better example of music than modern popular music.

I hope people also see that things like sports and hobbies that some might partake are also not on the top of the hireachy and treat them similarly as they do with music and video games. Its a tough question I'm facing as a new Christian but from my point of view on things, if its not reading scripture, praying, evangilising or going to church, it is not at the top at the hireacrchy and there is room for improvement. While I agree that music and video games are low on that hierarchy, things like playing sports, weight lifting hiking and ect... are higher on the hierarchy but still not at the top of it. So are we supposed to let go of those activities too slowly and gradually? All things are permissible but not all beneficial. its hard to decern what is beneficial considering that in all activities of the hierarchy you can praise God in some way. Its a bit scary since I'm looking at it in the long term but please share your thoughts on this as I am open to learn and consider perspectives of others and scriptures / church fathers on this. First of all, musical instruments aren't even explicitly prohibited in the Church, they're just not part of the Eastern rite. The question is very old and a lot of the attempts to answer it are frankly stupid. Most young people under 30 don't even listen to rock music anymore, it's mostly hip-hop and modern pop these days, a lot of African American stuff. Yeah sure, listening to Slayer would be kinda weird for a practicing Orthodox but not all rock and metal is about Satanism, sex and profanity. There are even plenty of religious bands out there, albeit non-Orthodox. In Russia there's Orthodox rock and rap but in the West Orthodoxy is still a small minority, usually Greek or Slavic immigrants. 99% of the Anglosphere is not Orthodox.

father what we consider music in our days it is not really music,and cannot be really called as music. we know now from science although orthodoxy does not need science to prove itself. that the music and the sound of orthodox hymns are a blessing,and the sound waves they are on,sooth the soul of the human entity both spiritually and biologically. on the contrast popular music from metal to pop culture ,it is on sound waves that create chaotic behaviors and stress distress,on the human entity. with very few exceptions of course that do exist,and are mainly belonging to folklore traditional music styles of many people on earth.

My advice is to shun rock music altogether. It has totally ruined the worship services in most of the newer Protestant denominations. You don't want to open the door for that in your church, even an inch, or it can take over and turn your service into something that sounds like an ooga booga dance. I hope the Orthodox communty will be smart, and not allow that garbage into their churches. Also, I don't understand why anyone likes modern music at all, to me it all sounds like "Big Booty B-word." That's how all the rock and bebop music sounds to me. Modern music reminds me of jungle savages dancing around a fire to drum beats, as they prepare to invoke some demon and/or eat someone. The age of good music is over, all the good music was invented mostly in the past. I don't know if we will ever have good music being invented anew again, as Christianity is no longer dominant, and is in a place now of imitating stuff from the outside world rather than creating content to influence the outside world.
