I’m in Pennsylvania. The winter weather blows away my mulch every year. I’ve put down 18 tons of mulch in 3 years. I’m having rock put in next month

Useful to know that rubber mulch is more expensive than rock. Useful information. Thank you!
@BMattWill

While rock may be a higher cost in some places, the upfront cost is a savings considering you need to mulch annually. Mulch also brings ants, termites, meadow voles and other undesirables. 2 inches of rock, never touch it again.

Until it fill with leaf litter and other debris and fills the cracks and crevices. Then the weeds move in.

@@davidtaylor9249nope, as long as you maintain you won't have issues. I've had rock for 15 years and only ever had a few weeds here and there 30 mins a week does the trick

Mulch does not necessarily need to be applied annually and can often be obtained for free so it is still cheaper. Doesn’t necessarily bring the undesirables either.

My family and I just got our first home and I am a novice to all of this. I bought a lot of mulch & rocks and did a mix of both. I wish I seen this video before because I would have got the rubber mulch. I want something that is low maintenance and the rubber mulch sounds perfect. Thank you for the tips!!

I have put the decorative stones around my house and decided to remove them because it was difficult to weed. It was super hard to weed on the rocks unless you want to use chemicals. Now I have both along with some plants. I put sections of rocks around the back of the house and by the side windows. I used a good quality weed fabric under the rocks. I laid a very thick rocks on top. I haven’t see any weeds on the rocks bed in the last 10 years. My rock is about 4-5 inches thick.

Thanks for the video. I had mulch and was thinking on getting rocks instead. The soil and mulch are up to my foundation, and now I have termites. I should have gone with a landscaper than a contractor. That was one of my big blunders for sure.
@johnlee7085
@johnlee7085 2 месяца назад
Anything up to your foundation can harbor termites. It wasn’t a problem with the material as much as the placement.

another option is pine needles, the acidic will help with the weeds

What about the pros and cons against the elements? I have a roof that drains a lot of water. I assume rocks would be my best option?

Do you recommend irrigation/drip lines to go above or below landscape fabric? I just had rock replace mulch and landscaper put all the irrigation lines under the fabric.

Thank you for doing this video. I do disagree with the mulch over soil. Here in Michigan, if you clean up and remove the weeds, then add mulch, the weeds seeds are in the ground. when you try to pull the weeds, the mulch get lost in the soil. And I am a believer in using fabric mulch under the rocks or mulch. Thanks again.

MI too. Everywhere I have rock with weed barrier, there are no weeds. Everywhere there's mulch with no barrier, weeds are a-plenty come spring. Not sure what he's talking about.
@johnlee7085
@johnlee7085 2 месяца назад
Without a fabric/barrier, the mulch would have to be tremendously thick to stop the weeds. An environmental alternative to the fabric, especially under mulch, is thick layers of cardboard. Whatever weeds are in the ground exhaust their stored energy by the time the cardboard breaks down, and you’re just left with better soil.

For people that have done rock what’s the pros and cons of small rocks vs big rocks? Big like 2”-3”.
@johnlee7085
@johnlee7085 2 месяца назад
Small rocks are easier to move around. This is a pro when you want to move them and a con when you want them to stay put.

what would work best to keep my chickens from making their sun bath up against my house? Also the west side is slanted like a hill, and I need something there too

Pavers? We’re trying that at the side of the shed next to the new coop I’m building. Also adding a 12” tall piece of Trex trim at the base where they will inevitably scratch debris against it.

I've done both mulch and rock I won't do rock again. After a number of years it eventually fills in with dirt (every time the wind blows) and then there is no way to fix it other than add more rock.
@LastBastian
@LastBastian Год назад
You can't blow it out with a leaf blower, or turn it with a rake? The rock at my house is at least a decade old, and I haven't seen this issue.
@valigirl6510
@valigirl6510 Год назад
I think every 10 years or so you have to remove all the rock. Clean it with a pressure washer and put the weed fabric down to start it over.

Buy rock-skip all the barriers because they all suck and fail- use a weed torch. Simple, effective, better looking and last longer.
