This thing is so much easier than using a rake. I plan on doing a lot of dethatching on both my front and back yards so stay tuned for more videos. This is the dethatcher I got: amzn.to/3iEwCy0 Check it out. Remember to like and subscribe! Thanks.

Thanks for the great assembly video! It made putting my Rock and Rocker together as their photos are tiny and unclear, but your video was quick, concise and to the point! My energy can now go to a .37 acre of never scarified lawn. It's got so much thatch that we're going to have to reseed, probably. Thanks again! Zone 6b, Utah.

Thank you so much for a very clear, concise, straight-to-the- point tutorial.. I especially appreciate you showing how to correctly assemble the bagger and power cord. I purchased an IronWorx scarifier/de thatcher and it pulled a lot of thatch.. can't wait to see the results of a beautiful, lush, green healthy lawn in a month or so 👍🏼

I bought a RknRkr and used the scarifier to prep for overseeding and it worked great after discovering the best way to use it. It doesn't push very well because of the rotation. The forward rotation tends to make it climb. If you pull it it maintains contact much better and requires less effort giving better results.

Something important to keep in mind that wasn't mentioned. This uses a 15amp motor. If your extension cord is 25ft to 50ft you need one that is no smaller than 14AWG. If you're using a 100ft extension cord, make sure it is no smaller than 12AWG. Otherwise, you run the risk of burning up the motor. Thank you for the video.

Great review...on the fence between this and the sunjoe...I saw a guy on RU-vid who used a blower after instead of raking so that should make the job a bit easier.
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch 2 года назад
I will try that. The raking was not bad but I figured I would use the mower bagger next time. I will try the blower to see how that does. As for the detahcher, I am sure they are both great. I just wanted the larger one to hopefully cut back on the time it takes. Good luck either way you go.

I saw that also a guy used a blower after dethatching.. he had a huge pile but I felt u would be blowing debris back into the lawn.. idk.. ima try bagging mine with the mower first to see how that works out..

We had the Sunjoe 15," and the air vents on the bottom front kept getting clogged, often causing the unit to overheat. These vents are next to impossible to keep clean because they are so close to the ground, and if you do clean them, you damage the foam there to prevent debris from getting into the motor area! Also, the Sunjor did not work well with Bermuda grass. The thatcher kept getting wound up with grass and falling off! The Sunjoe bagger is too small to use, so I used a bungee cord to keep it open but angeled downward to prevent debris from flying up. Did you have any issues with the grass wrapping around the thatcher blade and pushing it off the unit? I had this issue with the Sunjoe because we have some pesky Bermuda grass I am trying to get rid of. The Bermuda grass is vine-like and would wrap around the blade and push it off! This Rock & Rocker looks better built, and I will try it out. Thanks again. Update: The Rock & Rocker arrived and it is great and so much better than the Sunjoe units I tried. It has plenty of power, the bearing design and attachment mechanism of the blades are different than Sunjoe's and did not get clogged, and seems more robust. The bag is bigger than any other thatcher out there and can fill up after a few passes but I found it easier to empty the bag instead of not using a bag and going back and raking the lawn to remove thatch left. The first time you use any thatcher you will get a lot of thatch! Much more than you would anticipate but after continued use, it will be much less. One thing I am doing differently this year is I bag when I cut my lawn. Previously I would mow and not bag thinking my mulching blade was leaving good material behind to feed the lawn. This issue this material is what builds up and it doesn't degrade quick enough to make a difference. I use fertilizers and was told to bag to reduce the thatch build-up. The Rock & Rocker unit is well built, larger, and has a more powerful motor to handle the tough jobs, and the quick-release handles make it easy to assemble and store. I thatched my entire lawn on the 3-level setting and the blade was clean afterward and picked up quite a bit. Using the Sunjoe I had to clean the thatcher blade often to remove buildup at the bearing which would cause the blade to pop off! And the last note is this unit did not overheat and the air intake did not clog once. The Rock & Rocker is a winner and highly recommended.
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch 2 года назад
Thanks for all the info. I did not see any of those issues on this one. The bagger does fill quickly, but I think any bag will because of all the thatch its pulling up. No issue with it over heating either.

FYI - The "dethatcher" is really a power rake and will pull up loose grass. Thatch is a spongy material just under the loose grass. In order to remove the thatch from your lawn, you'll need to use the scarifier.
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch Год назад
That is good to know. I did end up using that and it did a great job. I don't even use the dethatch rake blade now. I like the scarifier better.

Good machine. I just used it for the first time before I wrote this. I do wish they had battery powered ones. The cord kept falling out. I get that's on me. It takes some getting used to. My cord management skills were terrible and I know it. Even when I get used to it, this would be tough to use on a bigger yard. There's the dethatchers ya pull behind the tractor for the real big yards. I took a 2nd look at the above and it looks like I'm not happy. I'm actually very happy with how everything went for a first time. I would just like to see a battery option. I have the EGO line of tools, and those are awesome. They didn't have a dethatcher, so I bought this.
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch Год назад
Battery one would be awesome but based on the numbers, it would not last long. I think it would need a lot of batteries.

We’ve never done that to our lawn. 😬 Are you supposed to keep going over the lawn until you get less and less thatch? Or is one pass enough?
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch 2 года назад
It's really about how much you have. If you mulch the grass you may have a lot. Some grass handles it better than others. Like St Augustine does fine with a lot of thatch because of the way it grows, but our zoysia grass gets very thatchy and needs it a lot. As for doing the dethacthing, you may need to do it over a period of time so you do not tear up your grass. The dethacher does a great job, but if you get too aggressive it will tear your grass right out.

Getting ready to purchase one of these; What size/rating of power cord does this unit require to run properly?
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch 2 года назад
I used a basic cheap 100' extension cord with it and it was fine. I think the one I used in the video is 16 gauge. I will probably use a better cord with it in the future just to keep it from getting hot. I already have a 100 ft. 12/3 Extension Cord like this one: amzn.to/3LxHESw
