Rockefeller collection sale rakes in $832M for charity

The art world witnessed history this week when the Peggy and David Rockefeller collection scored a record sum at an auction. Christie's sold 1,500 items including paintings by some of the most well-known artists of the past 200 years. Everything sold and all proceeds went to charity. Anthony Mason reports.

I'm calling BS on the "820 M to CHARITY" said like they're building affordable housing in some inner city, USA - or saving lives in Africa. They're giving a huge amount to Harvard U. (which has endowments something like 70 Billion sitting in investments already) and other places that only benefit the elite rich people they so adore. I think most of this will filter back to the non profits that employ the younger kids of the Ivy League Crowd that get $250K a year to work in some Manhattan office.

John Zabik Yes, it is their Money, they can do whatever they want with it. However, misleading people by saying they are “donating to charity” is very slimy.

and when was the last time you donated something to charity? other than sitting at home and blabbering and raging on how these people lie about donating money they are so famous that its pretty hard for them to lie on media because the truth will eventually come out but tell us your story then, what all charitable works have you done ?>

I'd pay any amount of money for the entire estate. Then I'd turn the whole thing into a huge museum for kids and adults to encourage artistic development. Every cent of the donations would go to help inner city kids, the homeless, free career training, you name it. I would be the first rich person with morals!

I bought John D. Rockefeller’s granddaughter (Muriel) silver dish at an antique store. I didn’t realize what I bought until I came home and polished it. It is engraved! Then to find out I’m John D. Rockefeller’s 3rd cousin 5 times removed! So I bought something that ended up back in the hands of family!
