Story behind the song:
Ask any cellist. They'll tell you about what's it's like to play the cello part of Pachelbel's Canon in D. It's the same 8 notes over and over and over again. The good news is, it's easy to memorize. The bad news is you don't know when to stop. There's a rumor floating around that says Pachelbel either died while writing it, never finishing the cello part or that he dated a cellist and it did NOT go well. This arrangement is dedicated to all the cellists that have fallen asleep while playing this song...or at least wanted to fall asleep. Steven Sharp Nelson actually began writing this arrangement while bored at a wedding.
Ahem...all the bitter cello-malice aside, Pachelbel's Canon in D (written in the 1600's) has stood the test of time -- celebrated as the most recognizable piece of classical music. We like to call it the "one-hit wonder of the 1600's." It really is an amazingly catchy piece of music. It demonstrates the musical form of the "canon," when a melody is played and then repeated in a round by other voices. (watch how the melodies are passed from one cello to the next - right to left)
ALL THE SOUNDS YOU HEAR WERE CREATED BY THE CELLO -- bowing, plucking, strumming, and beating the cello any way possible.
This arrangement was written before ThePianoGuys posted our first video, "Michael Meets Mozart" - but we hesitated to film it because of how involved the idea was. We've never used "extras" before! So we put it off. And put it off. And then put if off some more. One day Al van der Beek was skimming through our thousands of messages on Facebook and happened to see one with the title "wedding" in the subject line. A woman emailed us about an opportunity to film at a big magazine spread wedding photo shoot. It was perfect--they would have the location, flowers, actors, and even a cake. Everything we'd need. To make a long story short, we excitedly scheduled our video shoot for the same day as their photo shoot, but a few days prior to the day it fell apart. After much discussion, we determined to move forward on faith that we could still work it out. Paul Anderson marshaled all sorts of connections and called on whomever he could and by nothing short of a miracle in a matter of days the wedding was all planned -- complete with a beautiful location, stunning decor, sharp tuxedos, fancy flowers, a photogenic bride and groom, 60 energetic guests, and an iced cake!
The piece at the beginning that is just ending is Steven Sharp Nelson's 4-cello arrangement of "Thanks Be To Thee" (att. to Handel). Download the full MP3 here: thepianoguys.c... (TRACK 7 on the album "Tender Mercies")
Thanks to our many "cameos" we're reluctantly-proud to admit that this is the first video where you can SEE ALL FIVE PIANO GUYS! Everyone appeared as themselves, except for Jon who got a little carried away with his characters. :)

My wife is a very fine cellist, and I've heard for many of the 43 years of our marriage that it's horribly boring. As an oboist, I'm happy to say almost no parts for my instrument were ever boring... And no, the oboe isn't the tall wooden bedpost instrument. That's the bassoon. It's also a double-reed instrument, so is also an awesome addition, but the oboe is smaller than a clarinet, though not by much, and sounds great, if played well.
@woof4631

The cellos have the bass part or the accompanyment (sorry I’m not good with spelling) and the violins have the main melody.

If you want a chuckle about the boring cello part, look up Rob Paravonian's "Pachelbel Rant" about how the piece has followed him ever since he was forced to learn it in the school orchestra...

Pachalbel was a genius. He wrote a beautiful part for the violins, he wrote a beautiful part for the piano, and when he got to the cellos he wrote down eight perfect notes...and died. XD
@jonathandowning1828
@jonathandowning1828 5 лет назад
Wasn't written for piano...Sorry to be "that guy", but I'm gonna be a real jerk and get technical for a minute (and hope I'm not wrong xD). So, Johann Pachelbel was a Baroque composer - firstly, the piano didn't exist, so he would have written for harpsichord (like Bach). However, his "Canon in D" was written for three violins and what's called a "Basso continuo" - a very repetitive line for either a cello or double bass to support the melody played on other instruments. To summarise, Pachelbel's canon was never intended to be fun for the celloist or put him in the spotlight, and no harpsichord (let alone piano) part was written specifically for it. Thanks for hearing me out :)

@natalieguzman4146

Start with violin or viola because is would be easier mad if you do viola, it's the same thing as cello but the notes are one lower on the staff. And instead of three fingers it's four and your second and third finger are basically the second finger on viola.......... I have a viola and cello

David Ivey It's actually two guys, one who does the cello parts and one who does piano. They sometimes have other musicians play various parts for them, as well. In this video, it is indeed the cellist playing all the string parts, with the tracks overdubbed and his multiple images edited in. The piano player is in drag, hidden as a member of the wedding party. He loses his wig and reveals his true identity toward the end of the clip!

So relatable for this piece I play cello and this is so true! Sometimes you get some fun solos, but most times you're playing a bass part. At least in the songs I've played. Maybe that's why I like the PianoGuys so much, because the cello is the melody A LOT of the time. #celloprobs
