That wasn't really an interview. It was a conversation between two friends who happen to both be very smart, thoughtful, funny, articulate, talented, and hard-working. And it was an absolute delight.

Honestly one of the best interviews concerning being an artist I have seen in ages. I am right there with him on so much of what he has to say. Well done, and I have never seen Mr. O'Brien on his A-game more than here.

totally agree. I was never a huge WS fan, but you can tell hes the real deal. almost everything he says is accurate, and the things that are personal to him are subjective, and he realizes this.

Shelly Smith - Vampire Fans Magazine As a creative person, I find time every day to create something, whether it is writing, photography, a logo for a client, etc. That was the single biggest part of the interview that stuck with me.

i originally got that idea from guitarist Bill Frisell. he says he would try to write a new song everyday. You can't just wait for the right moment to come, you just have to be ready. So you keep working on it, until something pops out. It's not like everything you write everyday will be great, and there will be many ideas you revisit on another day.. but its a good "habit." constantly trying to come up with new ideas, without the pressure of having to "write an album." -- the material should come natural. -- but you cant just sit around and try to build the perfect moment hoping it will come. you just gotta wake up everyday and do it.

Ok so I’m so late on this but as a chef I can relate to everything Jack is saying. There is complexity in simplicity. You push yourself constantly but if the crowed doesn’t react the way you expect then your at a standstill because you think you’ve done something so well. Then when they are reacting with enthusiasm you are already on your next move without being able to enjoy that moment of recognition. He’s brilliant. So prolific and I hope that he just keeps bringing us great music to listen to. Cheers

Because you punch in you have a responsibility, do what your told, work the machine and expected of that job etc. But if you're an artist and you have to create something from... nothing. Comfort can kill an artistic impulse.
@mikejones-vd3fg
@mikejones-vd3fg 6 лет назад
Yeah if your art is inspired by pain, that makes sense comfort = no pain, but thats not true, you can be rich and still have problems and pain. But not everyone uses that as motivator for art anyway, you can be happy and inspired by that also. Its because of our free time we gained-comfort that we were able to make art of this sophistication to begin with, if we were chasing wolly mammoth all day we wouldnt be working on our album. But if you couldnt get wolly mammoth you'd probably have some good material for a sad song. But no time for that, there's another mammoth waiting! put that noise maker down and sharpen your spear! we need to eat!

odibex Exactly! John Lennon once said in an interview that it’s easier to write songs when you have pillows to lie on and relax with.
@vvessel_
@vvessel_ 5 лет назад
I disagree. Look at someone like David Lynch, he meditates and tries to reach the pinacle of comfort to create his art.
@thomasrainbow
@thomasrainbow 5 лет назад
I think it's more about focus and attention rather than comfort. The word comfort being used here is too vague. If you focus your attention on being comfortable you will become lazy. But if you are comfortable and focus your attention on what drives you as an artist, you're golden.
@arex82
@arex82 5 лет назад
This “denial of ‘comfort’” approach towards the creation of art, remember, is Jacks’ perspective. It’s what works for HIM.. There is no set way to create and no one approach towards creating something. What makes art so wonderful is you can tell 9 artists to paint a tree and, in the end, you would have nine different trees. Possibly, Each more wonderful than the last. People seem to forget this is an interview and the views contained therein are that of the subject. We’re the ones curious about how HE ticks - nowhere did he say “THIS IS THE CORRECT WAY TO DO THINGS”

Though I was totally StarStruck, I played it cool and threw a peace sign up and said a quick "What's up, Jack?!", with which he replied with a simple nod. Over the years, I’ve watched this a handful of times, and I still find his philosophies so insightful, but still grounded in reality, which is wonderful for someone with so much accomplishment. He’s so well spoken, yet not at all pretentious; actually conscious of pretentiousness. He’s brilliant in a way that relates more to life than to formal education. Yes, he’s very intelligent but he uses the knowledge as a way to relate to life. He’s inspired me very much in life, not just musically. I can also appreciate his disdain for shortcuts, and it makes me appreciate the mistakes of my own music; the true grittiness of blues and my voice

Totally impressed with this interview. I don't know who I learned more about, Jack White or Conan O'Brien. O'Brien did his homework for this interview and the result was the most interesting interview I've ever seen with Jack White. And I'm impressed with how intelligent Jack is bc most interviewers ask him the same questions. I'm into history and documentaries, always feeding my mind bc I'm so curious. One of them being to remind myself where I'm going when I've lost my way on the way to Something Beautiful. Or when I'm on my way to Something Beautiful and I want to remind myself to stay on task keep working hard. Keep creating pushing myself believe and that it's okay if you make magic and you don't quite understand the recipe that you use. That you throw it in a pot and it just is Magic like stone soup. You try enough things you work hard enough at it you figure out what you're supposed to do. And why is it that you're supposed to do one thing. Am I a painter, am I a potter, a jewelry maker, a poet, a photographer, a dishwasher, a mom... An Artist I don't have to choose any one thing. Tons of people do it but now it's taboo. I know. Meanwhile many late show hosts or TV personalities have booze in their shows. Examples: Fallon Colbert, Kimmel, Conan have all drank on air. Here's my argument: Smoking kills NO DOUBT but no one ever smashed into a car and killed children while driving because they were smoking tobacco. If you are going to actively promote alcohol (something I enjoy as well) let's not treat tobacco as some Satanic Substance. I'm a smoker, I'll be the first to tell young people DON'T START it's very hard to quit. But alcohol is FAR more dangerous than tobacco, who could even argue? Drinking is promoted in Super Bowl commercials, all sports games, daily ads we see. Everyone knows the phrase "It's Miller time" in America. Alcohol has a long list of innocent bystanders deaths on it's record. Smoking kills the individual who decided to do it for a long period of time. I'm not defending smoking (don't start) or booze (I enjoy drinking to this day) but obviously Alcohol is promoted huge in America while we beat down tobacco. You can drive a car and work and raise a family if you are addicted to smokes. Good luck doing that on booze. Just a double standard

Great conversation. Here they are, talking to their idols, and here I am a fan of both, listening to their interpretations and beliefs. It's like as a fan of conan, you really get to know him here, same w/ white. Like as an artist, you see what conan considers as beautiful - talking about how he wanted the Lincoln movie to end and the Titanic example - like those things that don't need to be explicitly spelled out, the beauty of mystery. This was well worth the watch.

You know, the first time I heard someone say something along those lines it really struck me, and this is coming from someone who read history books for fun as a kid, but the older I get the more I don’t see a huge difference. The only difference between great fiction and great works of history is that fiction has been crafted to make you think whereas history is chaos delineated through the funnel of (usually) one person or one perspective. For any historical event there are hundreds if not thousands of conflicting accounts so though I admire the idea that someone ‘wants to know what happened’ unless your looking at history as a bunch of statistics, and even those are often estimated, there are many instances where you’ll never know the full scope of any given instance or any given person in history, making reading history nearly as arbitrary and as subjective as fiction in a lot of ways...

@@dwellynconway4721 fully agree. both "genres" are only as arbitrary as their content. readable, non biased, objective history is rare and precious and a huge well of information from which much great fiction is written.

I've always liked Conan, but now I feel a sincere connection with him. Although Serious Jibber Jabber is normal in that it has an interviewer and an interviewee (and far better than the annoying blathering of the format-inspired Charlie Rose Show), Conan's well-timed comedy is merely icing on the cake for the brilliant intellect that shines through him. It takes a special person to be consistently funny on multiple networks over 20+ years, but to be as well-read, articulate, and genuinely good and caring makes Conan a real treasure. A BIG thanks to Conan and his team for creating this!!! How great would it be to work with these guys everyday. I wish I knew where the signup sheet was.

The way Jack speaks of Bob Dylan, is EXACTLY how I feel when I listen to him speak. it is uncanny. I consider him a kindred spirit and I know I will get the pleasure of seeing him perform one day, and the fact that at this point it will almost certainly be an intimate acoustic performance is by no means a disappointment.
