It is exactly Drake's self-absorption, sensitivities, bragging, and general introspection that made him as popular of an artist as it did in the early 2010s. That and his penchant for both rapping and singing and often on the same track. Those qualities just made his songs really relatable and therefore comforting to listen to in a way. Plus you got to feel the highs of Drake if you were really bought into the lyrics and as a teen/young adult, you generally would be. Also, I'll add that for me personally, I like his voice a lot. It's a type of voice that I think he needed if he wanted to both be a popular rapper and singer.

Hip hop needed this album at the time. It was beyond refreshing and smooth compared to anything else in the previous years. Just a beautiful sound with a vibe that is forever unmatched

This is an interesting album to look back after all these years. This album’s energy I feel like it’s tied to a younger audience which feels weird cause I grew out of that space I feel the album is really for. I still have very fond memories of certain songs on this album because of the nostalgia.

I’m not really a drake fan but I think we shouldn’t discredit his lyrics although I don’t find them appealing either. He was probably around 25 at this time and is blowing up as a main stream artist. Can you really blame the guy for rapping about what he’s talking about in this album as a 25 year old with this huge success put upon him now? The great rappers we appreciate so much are because they tend to rap and speak on things wise beyond their years so we sorta penalize artists for rapping in the perspective of their actual age going through these things haha. Just some food for thought

@@DeGoatcus idk looking back on it I was a lot younger and enjoyed the sound and lyrics. Now I'm looking at it and see there is no balance. For a rapper of his caliber I feel he could've improved on that because even Kendrick and Cole at the same age and similar position in popularity were able to diversify their topics and delivery. So in my opinion you can absolutely penalize/hold that against him.

@@Blackmagic_874 haha I’m not a drake fan either but it sounds like you agree with me. We both enjoyed this project when we were younger but revisiting it, it seems like we grew out of that phase. We hold Cole and Kendrick so high up is because they rap about perspectives that feel a decade older than their actual age which is why we appreciate them so much. But to be upset that a 25 year old having his first real blow in the industry and talking about what he talks about on this album makes sense.

For a few years there, I was so dismissive of mumble rap and developed this weird gatekeeping perspective on rap but as I’ve gotten older, it’s cool for me appreciate and understand how rap has developed even though it might not be my cup of tea.

i think the simplicity is the genius in drakes lyrics. his lyrics aren’t deep your right. but they seem to resonate somehow with literally everyone. I remember so many fuckin people using one off one liners from this album on their Instagram captions and stuff or there Facebook timeline. it’s not deep but it’s so simple that it tends to be relatable especially if your going thru it in a relationship or something. His lyrics are known for quotables. Simple one liners that aren’t deep but relatable as fuck. he puts complex situations into these little one liners some how idk how. Marvin’s room for example I know you didn’t like that song but it’s a LEGIT FEELING a lot of men clearly have when they are a little fuckin tipsy and are missing there ex and feel like calling them and just saying whatever a drunk person missing his ex would say lol. it happens quite often where men or women get drunk and feel like texting or calling their ex girl friend or boyfriend and wanting them to take them back or whatever. Especially fuckin people 18-29 where they are still very much going thru the dating scene etc.

absolutely correct. it's the same reason 2pac was such a huge icon. his lyrics were generally fairly simple, but he touched on topics and emotions that were easily relatable to many people regardless of background.

Yeah I'm about halfway through the vid and I think you're missing what made Drake so popular. This is easily one of his top 2 albums and it's all about the vibe. I wouldn't say this is a dig into the lyrics album, just one that you simply listen to and see where the music takes you. Lastly, Drake is unique (or was) in his singing ability that he mixes into his rap. Most rappers weren't doing that at the time and as skillfully as he does. Now, everyone tries. This is coming from a non-Drake fan btw. This album in particular though is one I'm a huge fan of, as are most ppl who listen to Drake. Classic

This isnt a classic - i think even his fans agree now.. but as you've seen from the comments - it was more nostalgia why younger fans labelled this album a classic - it had some great moments - but overall it lacked depth and missed what it tried to do. NWTS - is Drakes only classic. It shorter but achieves the same goals with pop-rnb-rap - but hits the mark of "toxic complex rich guy" with more precision and execution. It has the same underdog element but more honest self relfection IYRTYTL - is also a drake classic mixtape for similar reasons but leans more pop-rap vibes -

i think it's ok to be hyper critical of Drake. If you go to a Lakers game to see Lebron, the guy considered the best, youre going to be disappointed if you dont witness a spectacle. He has mass appeal but theres something with Drake that comes off vapid and makes you ask "how is this guy #1?". The album cover even shows how uncomfortable and self loathing he was at the top.

Hey Bob, love your reactions! The reason you might have associated the openings tracks' sounds with the Weeknd track from Rodeo is because this album was heavily influenced by the sound that the Weeknd came out with in his seminal House of Balloons mixtape. In fact, some tracks from this album were leftovers that the Weeknd gave to Drake. Take Care helped popularize/mainstream the sound that the Weeknd pioneered - hope this context makes sense!

Don’t let younger guys fool you, when drake came out, he was a sensation and really changed the game. He set in stone that it’s ok to not make gangster music. He talked about what’s inside his head. His first 2 projects are very introspective and underrated. It just recently became cool to not like drake, I mean he’s been in the game for 10+ years at such a high level, it’s impressive. Just because his last 2 albums were mediocre doesn’t mean his 6 before weren’t amazing

That Buried Alive interlude is one of my favorite tracks. That era was when Kendrick was starting getting a buzz and was probably recorded before or after Section.80 came out. This feature definitely boosted him before he eventually blew up with Good Kid.

It was great to see you experience this album after knowing you’ve heard so much about Drake these past couple of months. I hate saying this because it sounds like a cop out but this album is really a “you just had to be there” type of album. That of course does you no good lol. The thing is Drake, and especially him on this album, makes music for listeners to live vicariously through him. This particular album is an album targeted towards that 16yr old kid who’s experiencing his first heartbreak. When that happens and your self esteem takes a hit at that young of an age you want to feel confident. You want to feel a little toxic. You want to feel like that heartbreak is just a stepping stone for bigger things in your life. To look at it now it seems like no big deal but when you’re younger it is a big deal. When this album came out I was experiencing my first real breakup and I felt so down but then I’d hear Drake talk about how he used the pain of his past relationships as fuel to get him to where he was and it honestly helped get me out of an emotional slump. It’s easy to criticize how corny some of the lines are now and I don’t even agree with 95% of what he’s saying now that I’m older but it wasn’t made for me as I am now. And it served it’s purpose well for what it was made for. Drake is toxic and petty and immature and cocky and self absorbed, but it’s great because we can’t be that and for a lot of people sometimes they want to be that so his music makes that possible. There’s a lot more that could be said about drake but I wanted to hit on why he and in particular this album connected with so many people lyrically despite it not actually being that great lyrically.

Bro, this comment is crazy. It exactly describes my situation and feelings towards the album as a 15-16 year old kid back in 2012. I am glad I was there when the album already leaked in October 2011. The melancholic vibes of the album, the album cover and the music video of Marvins Room for example were unmatched at that time. I can see why people who listen to this album right now don't understand the hype. It is really hard to explain and convey the concept Take Care stood for 10 years later, but I feel that everybody who was there at that time shares the same universal feeling.

I think you came into this thinking this is an influential rap album and it is, but the thing that made it so influential is that it is so different and very vulnerable for the time. It built on what 808s and heartbreak started and made it cool to be emotional and vulnerable as a rapper, even if some of those thoughts and feelings come off a bit toxic. He is okay with being viewed as both the hero and the villain, the one who lost someone great and the catch both.

Drake is self aware to a degree. He knows that he's mostly committed to living a shallow ass rap lifestyle, that he's unable to truly commit to these women he's crying about lol, and super narcissistic, but he can't change and so he just keeps popping the bottles and enjoying being at the top of the game. This album is basically him wallowing in all this but also alternating between that and celebrating his success from So Far Gone and Thank Me Later. Do remember you're jumping in two records in. Also I'll say when i was a 20 something toxic womanizer Drake was my fav rapper. Lmao. When you grow up Drake don't hit quite the same lol but the nostalgia for this era is strong. 😂

Just a few "notes" here since obviously this is your first foray into Drake - Drake is highly biographical; this is why pretty much every song is about him - and he's not always the hero in his own stories. On Marvin's Room he's absolutely a drunk douche looking to ruin a relationship because he drunk dialed a chick who he thinks still loves him, you were spot on with that analysis...however, I think you were looking at it as if Drake thought this was cool or that he's in the right...he knows he was wrong. This is an easy mistake to make because rappers don't always express their fallible nature, they typically play the hero in their songs. But Drake went to the Joe Budden school of introspective songwriting, where there's a razor sharp balance between right and wrong, almost to a degree of being contradictory at times. - Drake albums are products of the times they're created in, almost purposefully; Drake's music isn't "timeless" in the typical sense. However, the albums/songs are nostalgic moments to those who were listening at that time. So while - in general - it can be argued "the best artists make timeless music", it's just not that simple in this case. To fans who were "there", it's special...It's one of those "if you know you know" or "you had to be there" kind of things. Also, you have to remember Drake's age at the time of this album; mid-20s...that's the mindset he's writing in. He's not even fully matured emotionally yet, he's still figuring himself out. As someone who's the same age as Drake, it's easier to relate and look back with a fondness for the time, while also learning from those failures and successes. Add to the fact that he's a 20 something multi-millionaire and it's a recipe for disaster, relationship-wise. This is why Take Care strikes a balance between break-up album, and straight up Luxury Rap...that's Drake's life at the moment in time Take Care was being crafted. Expensive tastes and celebrating successes while also being emotionally confused - those are the themes. The "of the time" theme even carries over into some of Drake's best records; the timestamp series (ie. 5AM in Dallas, 4PM in Calabasas, etc.)...through each album/song we're getting a look into his life at the time. - Simplicity is key to Drake's relatability. If Drake was rapping about the same subjects with the lyrical depth of a Kendrick or a Lupe Fiasco then he would not have the same impact culturally. Drake is absolutely capable of rapping his ass off (again, I recommend the timestamp records and his Comeback Season mixtape for proof), but the simple - yet insanely quotable - lyrics are what has earned him fans. Lines like "I only love my bed and my momma, I'm sorry" are culturally embedded. Is it deep? No. Is it relatable? Yes. It's also comedic in it's pettiness which makes it fun. I also just want to add that "Look What You've Done" is literally my favorite song of all time and I can't help but tear up when I hear it. Again, relatability...I can relate this song to my close relationship with my mom. Glad you at least highly enjoyed that one! The sample is from an old video of Static Major (songwriter for Aaliyah) at the piano sort of freestyle singing, you hit the nail on the head with the sonics of that one.

When this album came out, I remember having this feeling of nostalgia. Even though it had just been released 3 days before I listened to it, it felt like an album that I had heard years before and had only just recently rediscovered. Even to this day that feeling hasn’t gone away. Drake has a decent discography with a lot of hits but this album is something else.

If you are confused as to why everyone is always talking about Drake is because at this time all the way until now really had has made sure to stay in front of everyone’s eyes. Marvin’s Room is not about thinking logically it’s about being messed up in the club sending drunk texts, that’s why everything he says in that song has almost no rational meaning. One thing you didn’t notice is that drake’s lyrics is for everyone going through the same issues and struggles. There’s a whole world of people that go through the same thing as he does but we don’t know how to explain or put into words the same way that he does it which is why we love his music. Everything he raps or writes about isn’t just from his perspective. I think you may not understand most of what he raps or sings about because you’re not living through the same lifestyle that he does. It’s similar to how most people born rich can’t relate to people who are born poor.

the general consensus on top 4 for the past 10 years in hip hop was basically J cole , Kendrick , drake , and kanye in no particular order. Hate any of the artist as much as you want but you cant deny the amount of things each artist has done. Drake seems to be on the lower side of many who are deep in hip hop but I think of him as a gateway into hip hop for a lot of people and he has one of the hardest nostalgia factors to his music basically running the 2010s era alone. He sales like crazy too.

I never grew up with drake aside from a few songs from take care and annoying trends like hotline bling so without the nostalgia his music doesnt do much for me. Respect the impact he has on the game but after taking suggestions and checking out IYRTITL, it just seems decent in comparison to the rest of other artists and whats considered their best album

Yeah, Bob like a lot of people said, nostalgia is a big part of the appeal now for this album but regardless even though the lyrics are straightforward and basic, people still relate as well as most people also grew up with this album going through their first heartbreak. This album was a big part of the culture at the time. Marvin's Room, Headlines, HYFR, and The Motto were all anthems that basically everyone knew and loved. Funny enough, people do listen to drake for lyrics. He's sorta become this meme in which people always wait for a new album from him so they can have Instagram captions lol p.s. This album embodies players (that it's ok to feel feelings) and people on the grind and come up. It has great motivational songs, many anthems, and songs that will have you drunk calling your ex, much like Marvins Room. This thing was extremely revolutionary and polarizing on its release because nothing like this has come out before. I personally did not like this on release, but I love it now and can definitely call this a classic Hip Hop album.

Glad you finally came around to hearing the album Gotta understand where Drake is in his life during each of his albums You keep mentioning how all he talks about is himself, money, and all his success but that was what was going on his life during this album. He just came off a very successful album and was living up to his mentors (Lol Wayne) expectations. An observation from a self-described Drake stan: This album came out during a critical time in so many people's lives while simultaneously being a HUGE commercial hit. For many around my age (26) this album came out during either middle school, high school, or college years. Most, not saying all, but most Drake fans are between the ages of 20 and 35 now. For the people in this age group, Take Care dropped when we were just trying to figure out our way in life. This brings me to my point: I notice you kept referring to Drake as "just not getting it" throughout the video. I think that's exactly why this is a special album that resonates with his fans. At that time in our lives (middle school, high school, or college), we "just didn't get it" as young people either. We were just as confused as he was with life because we too were in his age bracket. For lack of a better way to phrase it, his fans grew up alongside him. It also helps Social Media was in its infancy during this time too. We were constantly connected with him. I first started liking Hip-hop when I was about 12 years old (2008). The Carter 3 by lil Wayne was my first "real" appreciation of music that I discovered on my own. His use of metaphor in his songwriting was unmatched. While Lil Wayne and the Carter 3 was all the rage in Hip Hop in the late '00s, Drake had his first hit single "Best I Ever Had". An extremely catchy tune. This song started to blend Rap and R&B closer sonically with Drake's patented "sing-song" delivery. It's from that song that his artistry starts to get more refined. Lil Wayne hears this and looks into more of Drake's earlier discography (Comeback Season/Room for Improvement). Then he signs him to Young Money and the rest is kind of History. Couple of Notes on Drizzy Drake as a Rapper: The guy can absolutely spit. And don't think too deeply about the lyrics. The lyrics are almost never ever about deep emotions. It will always come back to Love, Friends, Family, and or his Career (Rapping) for him. It's another reason why his music has universal appeal. However, there is no "Street Lights" or "Pinocchio Story" in Drake's Discography. He raps about exactly what he is saying almost to a fault. Sometimes, you'll need to know everything about a certain situation in his life to understand a song, line or even a phrase (Just look up "4pm in Calabasas" and genius it or even his verse on "Sicko Mode"). He will have insane wordplay and use of metaphor in his discography as you listen to him. He is technically speaking one of the best to do it. Nobody can absolutely catch a flow like this guy can. It's all about the flow with Drake, man.

Hey Bob, love the channel, been watching since the beginning. Also love how enthusiastic the community is; there's so much we want to tell you and show you to give you a complete picture and you're super receptive which is awesome cause I imagine it's overwhelming. 2 things I wanted to add since I don't think anyone else has said them: 1) what you liked about Wayne is his biggest strength I think, the one liners and technicality. He's a rap legend and has a unique and influential style. Since you have a long list of albums, maybe just check out his song Mona Lisa with Kendrick. Great performance from both. 2) Drake cultivates his image well and album drake is different than feature drake. When he features on other rappers' songs or does singles, that's often when he brings out the harder rap. A lot of his impact, his hits, and his moments that the rap community respects more are there and not on his albums although you can find all that in his albums too

The Weeknd claimed to have given up half of his mixtape to Drake for this album and that explains why half of the album sounds so much like The Weeknd. This was the beginning of the split between Drake haters and Drake fans. There’s been a lot of instances of Drake taking from other artists to benefit from them. Quintin Miller writing for him on his “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” mixtape, stealing the sound of Dram’s “Cha Cha” song and making “Hotling Bling”, stealing XXXTentacion’s flow from “Loot At Me!” and using it in his song “KMT”. There’s a lot of videos that compile these instances.

I think you're right on the trying to hate on it. But I've been thinking about that this weekend as I've been doing things and continuing to listen. The Drake haters certainly had their say beforehand, but I've seen plenty of comments from Drake stans as well. "Goat, best to ever do it, changed the game," so on. Phrases like that also put some expectations in my head, so there's a two way street happening on this one.

Drake just isn't that substantive, if you analyze it for what it is there's almost nothing you can really take from it. There's a reason people liked this album when they were literal teenagers.
