The 2005 Punch45 "25 to LIFE" anniversary model amplifier was a flashback to earlier Punch amps, such as the Punch 45HD. In this video, we will take a look at a 1991 Punch 45HD compared to the 2005 Punch 45, then try both on the Amp Dyno. Underrated? Uh, yeah, just a little ;-)

I still have 3 original Punch 45 amplifiers that I use. I also have 1 45hd that I need to get repaired and I intend to run it too. These are truly amazing and underrated amplifiers.

Great videos! I still have my old punch 150 from 1991. It works fine, like Rockford Fosgate should. I've been offered 500 bucks for it. But I'll give it to a museum first. Keep up the good work man!

I finally got all 3 punch 45s. I got a 90 gmc truck. I was thinking of putting all 3 in with a alpine pull-out as the head unit. I think that would be too cool old school. And to control every thing I got an alpine eq. Yup my dream and now i got all the parts.

That amp is older than me! I have a Punch 75HD works but has one scratchy sounding channel. I would like to use it but one channel isn't working right. I got that amp from a sound shop free it was in a pile of broken amps.

Scratchy channel is most likely the HB-PIM board. This is what happens when they go bad. Capacitors leak on the board and cause this issue. Only fix is to have the board replaced, caps are WAY to small to replace. It may work ok bridged, have you tried this? Orange positive and brown negative

I remember a friend had two Rockford 15’s with a Punch 45 In a cavalier wagon back in 1993. That car throbbed. You could hear him blocks away. Pure street bass.

Believe it or not, I had a 45HD running (2) Rockford Series-1 18's for a few years back in high school. Tons of boom, and I can't remember it ever going into protect mode (although it got VERY hot).

love your channel. it brings back so many memories of me tinkering in my garage with random amps pushing my kicker subs which i still have today! although i recently had to upgrade cause there was more silicone around the sub than the actual sub. i look forward when you have alpine v12 1990s amp on the dyno.

I'm pretty sure at 0.07 of the video, you have an 80's punch 45 sitting to the left of that 45HD. Did you test that one to compare it to the others. Wanted to know because I still have a punch 45 and 75 that work perfectly that I bought in 1988.

The owners manual for the Punch 30 (which also includes 45HD) shows a wiring diagram using just a single amp to power 4 12" subs, 3-way front stage and 3-way rear fill, and that was at 2 ohms per channel, not even trying to stress it with a 1 ohm per channel load. No need for multiple amps when you're kickin' it old school.

@@oldschoolisnewschool I'm gonna relive those years soon. Just grabbed a Punch45HD pretty cheap and found a pair of JBL 12"s from 1992 that have 95db sensitivity. I'll see what else I can scour the internet for cheap. Had to save months for this stuff back in the day, but now a few $20s and you can build your dream system from the early 90's! Of course, for the same price you can probably buy a 2,000 watt amp off Amazon, but what's the fun in that?

Hey big D I just recently bought a used broken Punch 150 for $40 because I always wanted one. It's the non HD model but looks the same. About what time did this one come out in? It's got the wires and rca connections hanging on one side. If fixed can it run one kicker comp vr at 2 ohm? It's a 12" dual 4 ohm sub woofer in a sealed box.

I believe the Punch 45 25 to Life is the exact same amp as the P2002 from 2005. Just re-badged with different cosmetics. You can buy one of those for $50 or pay 3x that for the 25 to Life. Same size, same power.

In essence, those amps are very similar. The price difference is reflective upon the custom tooled heatsink and logo badge.

It's too bad the 25 to Life series never really caught on. Would like to see you guys carry on the Punch 45/75/150 lineage. I know everything has gone to bigger power and all class D topology but, perhaps a line of SQ oriented amps that use the old nomenclature in some way?

Hello, Why does the dyno test at 1 % distortion and not a 0.05? Just curious, also why a 1khz track? Thanks for your feedback, just trying to gain knowledge!

Amplifier testing techs over the years have almost always used either 1% THD or clipping for the wattage output measurements. Julian Hirsch who did tests for Stereo Review, Car Stereo Review and more publications over the years used clipping for the majority of his measurements. The 0.05% THD number shown with older amps was basically a way to underrate an amplifier by showing the output power at a really low THD. You don't see this much anymore, amps are usually rated by manufacturers at 1% THD or some are rated at MAX power, which (in all honesty) is a useless number. As for the 1kHz track, I use this with full range amps to show the output you could expect powering mids/highs. Again, this is a standard frequency that's been used by many testers over the years. Hope this info helps.

I own a 40.2 Punch look's aluminum in color with a diamond on top with the old style R in the middle. Is it 20 watts a channel or 40 watts a channel I guess I'm wondering what it will do. I'm starting to add to my collection. Thank you.

Dereck BigDWiz decent powered class AB amps still existed in 2006-2007! I owned a Soundstream XTA600.2 which has now been modified to an "XTA720.2" by it's new owner, and I still own an XTA480.2! I would love an XTA1050.2 one day 😍
