Pecos diamonds are double terminated quartz crystals and clusters that come from the Permian Seven Rivers Formation which outcrops along the Pecos river from north of Roswell down to Artesia, NM. This video shows you where to go and what to look for.

I have a ton of these ! Found them near Bottomless Lakes in Roswell. After a good rain is the best time to go hunting. Theyre lovely

Yes! That’s close to where these were. They are fun to find! Too bad we don’t get much rain in NM, rockhounding after a rain is the best! Thank you for watching!

That school rocks hard. Yet it rocks no bricks. US-70 is not I-70. Thanks for teaching me about the Seven Rivers Formation. I found a fancy rock very near the same spot this year after that awesome flood. i think it is a "desert rose". It's the only one I've ever found. Don't stop rockin'. Watch out for snakes!

If you ever come through the Artesia area, I can show you some that I have picked up in my backyard! I live on the east side of the Pecos River in Riverside, most of the ones in my area are white,we have an outcrop of gypsum in my front yard! I live on ChalkBluff road,so named for the large amount of gypsum exposed on the surface. If you're in the area,just stop by #45 ChalkBluff road.

Well thank you very much for the invite Dean that’s so kind of you! I will certainly check in next time I’m in the area, but may be a while since I recently moved out of State for work. How very cool that you have 7 Rivers Gypsum in your back yard that has the Pecos diamonds! So awesome! Thanks for watching, and I appreciate your kind comment!

You find a very nice variety of rocks in your videos I've seen so far. I bet you have an amazing collection! I was wondering if you find many creatures such as snakes, spiders and scorpions you have to be cautious of? Those peach/pink looking quartz pieces are so pretty! Nice haul! Wow! Very nice video, I'm really enjoying your stuff! 🙂
@GeoRockNerd
@GeoRockNerd 3 года назад
Thank you!! My collection is a little ridiculous. Contact me through the group if you want some NM stuff in your collection, lol! Ran into a beautiful prairie rattler last year rockhounding, I heard a tiny rustle of a leaf as I walked past a rock. She was coiled up, perfectly still, and I just watched her for a moment before she slithered off. Seen a few tarantulas while out and about, and have come across an occasional black widow in a dirt hole. Came across a tiny scorpion once only (near the Pecos diamond spot, actually!) and it was hurrying in the other direction! I never mess with them, and so far, they’ve never messed with me. 🤞🏻👍🏻

Snakes,skunks,scorpions,lizards & the occasional Gila Monster! But if your real observant you can also see dove,quail,cottontail rabbits, jackrabbits,jackrabbit,, & the state bird the road runner! Mule deer & Elk & Black bears in the higher mountains. N.M. is truly the Land of Enchantment!

Karr ranch road,can be found by going east of Artesia on hiway 82 past the Pecos River, turn left on the first road on the left past the Pecos River. It is marked by county road signs; go north on Karr ranch rd., past the cattle guard at top of the hill near the caliche pit, on both sides of the road is B.L.M. land unless marked as private or about 3 miles going north you will reach the state of N.M. W.S.HUEY water fowl sanctuary that is marked as state Game & Fish property it is also on the site of the old S.G.Karr ranch! Stay on the county road north of the Huey wildlife/ waterfowl area & you can find Pecos diamonds on both sides of the road; just don't cut ranchers fences & close gates if you open one & you should be OK. Watch for rattlesnakes! All year round; if you choose,you can go back to the hiway & go about 300 yards east of Karr ranch road to ChalkBluff road & you can find some on both sides of the road, but this is also a residential/ commercial road for the oilfields; there are a few places on the east side of the road where a natural spring is & it is on B.L.M. land & not fenced, there are no restrictions on picking up Pecos diamonds, but please respect the oil & gas properties & open range cattle ranches,that lease the state & B.L.M. lands. Unfortunately most of the Pecos diamonds are in fenced in lands near the east side of the river, however there are a few places that have fences with just cattle guards & are legally accessible for the public; again be careful of rattlesnakes & other wildlife; & if you really need help & are nice people,stop by my house @ 45 ChalkBluff road & I can " guide: you to some good diamond places.
