I saw pictures of that place on TV, it always made me wanna go visit once but I didn't get to unfortunately I wanted to though ,I betcha it was different ,to see it physically 😢😢
Even now, from that angle, it looks like it could have been a top class facility hosting indycar, nascar and circuit racing if it was built at the right time in the right part of America.
I worked driving my truck building the place in 2000. I remember we worked all through the Easter weekend muckshifting. Near the end we basically drove round the circuit, pick up on one side, drop on the other. It was mega boring and more than one driver forgot to stop to get loaded! At one time I did hold the lap record round the circuit at just over 30mph! (Site speed limit was 25mph!). One lovely sunny day I climbed to the top of the stands. It was bloody freezing! Nothing between there and the Urals if an east wind is blowing! Pity its not used any more.
My local track. I drifted my volvo 340 there and loved it. but didn't quite finish in time my SHP eurocar spaceframed mondeo which was originally built to race there in the mid 90's when the banked track was new and nascar was coming to the uk. Except with recognisable European cars. Sadly i didn't get it up, running and finished until it was too late to run it round for a hot lap.
I went to an ASCAR practice and it was quite impressive if a rather short lap. Great facilities but the top of the seating areas caught a stiff breeze and we're pretty exposed. They had trouble initially with damp seeping through the track surface at an initial Indycar event. The British weather should have been taken into consideration!
Took my drone over this a while ago, when used as car/van storage facility. Posted on Facebook and ended up getting a call asking me to take it down. Privacy and security issues. Declined their request lol. Perfectly legal flight.
Went there once with the DT school kids for electric car racing, needed to go across to the offices, I said to them you don't get many race meetings here, how does it make money, they replied it's all about owners clubs and their track days. When the steelworks was closed and they were clearing the site, god knows what hazardous chemicals and pollution was released into the atmosphere, there were reports of many deformed babies being born in the local area, probably due to airborne particulates, all strenuously denied by the contractor of course.
This track in the video is not Rockingham NC. The Rock. I do not know where this track is located . But it is not NC Motor Speedway known as The Rock in Rockingham NC.
I have seen a press report that demolition would cost over £100,000. Not sure the money is available. I can’t be 100% sure the report was totally accurate.
@@ianfromcorby i worked there a couple of years ago for city car auctions but understood they moved to peterborough. I did have two laps around the original circuit as a passenger in a radical race car. An experience i will never forget.
It was built on former steelworks sludge banks ( ha ha ) and I for one from Corby will not miss the awful drone of cars and bikes going around in circles forever every bloody weekend in the summer !.
